Another Hero in search of a name

The character is a manipulator of chaos, and has ties to the ancient Greek (actually pre-Greek, Pelasgian) goddess Eurynome.

Per myth, Eurynome created the universe, the Earth, and the Seven Planatary Powers (placing a Titaness and a Titan over each - Theia and Hyperion were given the Sun; Phoebe and Atlas were given the Moon; Dione and Crius were given the planet Mars; Metis and Coeus were given the planet Mercury; Themis and Eurymedon; Tethys and Oceanus were given the planet Venus; and Rhea and Cronus took the planet Saturn).

The hero was a mortal man "gifted" by Eurynome and given limited power over the Chaos that she was originally born from. He won't be one of the "tights and capes" crowd, but more of a Shadowpact-style mystic operating a world of tights and capes. His creation is a result of Eurynome taking an active hand against the coming of great "cosmic destroyer type to be named later by the GM". (Yes, he's here to save the universe - later.)

So, I have this idea. I'm having fun dreaming up odd Chaos inspired powers. But I have no idea what to call this poke. Anyone got any interesting ideas?

Re: Another Hero in search of a name

How about another old Pelasgian name?

Hyacinthe, or the variant, Jacinth.

I'm afraid the only other name coming to me is Chinese - Pu, the Uncarved Block revered in Taoism, an apt symbol of Chaos in the sense of undifferentiated, unmanifest potential.

Or, maybe the name of one of the other Titans?

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary remarks that this is one reason we love this place - you can say "Pelasgian" and people know what you're talking about....

Re: Another Hero in search of a name

A few potent Sumerian gods with ties to old Chaos:

Tiamat -- the she-Dragon who contained Chaos, represented as salt water. Female, so you'd have to "masculinize" the name. Destroyed by Marduk to make the cosmos (though Marduk is Babylonian).

Apsu -- father-god, the masculine principle that was mingled with Tiamat as fresh water with salt

Inanna -- goddess of sexual love and war, said to be An's daughter. Called the Queen of Heaven, her lust for blood or sex is said to be insatiable, all-consuming and dangerous. Female, so you'd have to masculinize the name.

Enki -- the clever, crafty god who rules the waters below the earth, and like them, finds his way around, through and between. Trickster god, also god of wisdom and magic. Instructs man in all the arts and crafts.

Enlil -- the lord of the storm, embodying force, power, unruly violence of thunderstorms...but also a king and the appointed agent on Earth of An

An -- the sky-god and supreme authority, source of all order. He's really the only one of this group that doesn't have Chaos-affiliations you could use to justify borrowing the name.

Re: Another Hero in search of a name

In astrology, the symbol for the planet Saturn is the hooked cross...think of an upside-down question mark with a crossbar near the top of the vertical shaft. This is also the astrological symbol for Chaos.

So, working backwards, how about Saturn? Or use the original Greek name, Kronos?

Re: Another Hero in search of a name

Ronald Soak (for Terry Pratchett fans)

The Fith Horesman (also for Pratchett fans)

The Butterfly

Wings (in ref to the Butterfly effect)

Wave

Coin

Random

Schroedinger

Non-Linear Stan, the Strange Attractor

Poincaré (arguably the pioneer of Chaos theory)

Math

Note that the word that gives us "Chaos" actually meant "Emptiness" or "Space". That gives you all sorts of cosmic names to work with if you'd like.

*coughcoughs*

Lelantos.

That's a Greek Titan who's rarely mentioned; apparently he kept to the background, doing things that no one knows what. Could be suitble for someone who inflicts chaos in relative insecurity.

Wasn't he the guy that Apollo had the hots for? Died when Apollo accidentally hit him in the head with a discus? (Or maybe Zephyrus blew the discus off course in a jealous rage?)

That was the Hellene myth, but He was originally a Pelasgian Deity in His own right.

Lucius Alexander

Or so the palindromedary and I have heard.

I'm sure there's a physics joke here - but I'm missing it.

Nonlinear from Nonlinear dynamic systems. Strange attractors are attractors that are exceptionally complex. Both ideas, when looked at as English rather than math, feel kind of superhero-ish. ;)

Re: Another Hero in search of a name

How about something that hints at the entropic state of the early universe, like Protean. In personality he can just be a big question (showing no emotion and not talking to people) and be called something enigmatic like "The Mode".

1. Start looking people in the eye when you talk to them:

You mentioned tights and capes twice in the same post.

2. Please change "tired old Gamer dad" to somehow reflect

your solidarity with Neptune City.

3. Doctor Chaos and Captain Chaos have become cliche.

3a. A hail of .45 Caliber KTW "Cop Killer" Teflon Bullets (for the Pratchett Fans ) :bmk:

4. how about Retrograde, Asymptote, or Anacreon ?
