drunkonduty
The Fantastic Journey (1967) "Based on true events" it tells the story of the Fabulous Five's super-heroic origins. Directed by Ed Wood this movie became an instant cult classic with the late 60's counter culture for its early use of video feed-back to create "trippy" visual effects. Famous for it's wooden acting and cheap sets. Super hero fans continue to argue over whether the depicted romantic triangle between Patty Briggs, Michael Renton and the disembodied Ajok is a true or not. drunkonduty
The Captain Patriot Hour (1953 - 56) This Saturday morning serial depicted the (totally fictional) adventures of Captain Patriot. Each week the Captain would engage in smashing Communist spy rings, strike breaking (the strikers inevitably turned out to be Communist dupes) and rescuing his plucky, young side kick from gangsters. Female characters were few and far between and were either Mata Hari types attempting (and failing) to seduce the Captain or else his girlfriend-next-door, Mary, who stayed home and baked apple pie. Notable for it's high quality stunt work provided by the low-level, meta-human actor/stuntman Mike Mazurki. Mazurki would be smashed through windows and walls, and off high buildings every week. Sponsored by Lucky Strike the commercial breaks inevitably featured the (real) Captain and the trademark line: "I need to stay strong to protect America, so I smoke Lucky Strikes." wcw43921
UNTIL Angels A TV series running from 1980 to 1984, this "exercise in pure escapism" as one critic dubbed it, featured the adventures of four irresistibly glamourous and supremely competent UNTIL agents as they circled the globe outwitting, outfighting and outclassing the VIPER masterminds they encountered. Starring Loni Anderson as Serena Donovan, Jayne Kennedy as Carmen Turner, Jenny Agutter as Lady Celeste Harrowford and Maren Jensen as Marcy Stokes, the quartet were not only masters of disguise and infiltration, but exceptionally able pilots, and were often seen flying their Delta Angel fighters into battle--including one memorable episode when Serena flew a spacecraft with a nuclear payload into the path of an oncoming meteor, barely escaping with her life. The series also starred Susan Sullivan as their control officer, Commander Rosanna Chase, for the first two years; she was replaced by Erin Gray as Captain Allison Reynolds for the remainder of the run. A movie version--a sequel/update with new characters--starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as Helena Savage, Michelle Rodriguez as Tracy Hildago, Gina Torres as Petra Mitchell and Ali Larter as Hunter Reilly. It was released in 2013 and was number seven at the box office, receiving favorable reviews, although longtime fans of the show lamented the lack of cameo appearances by the original stars. A sequel is planned for release in 2015.
