Guest Thunder
I'm creating a new character for a campaign that is starting up and the only qualifier that has been given is that it must be a scientist. I would like to create a scientist that has a unigue field of study. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Hermit
If aliens have crashed to earth or are known in your game setting... "Xeno-Biologist" might be a good one.
Blue
Some with obvious attachments to superpowers... Quantum Temporal Mechanics (Time Travel) Entomology (Bugs) Endocrinology (Glands, like the petuitary that regulates growth!) Study of Superpower Development (Probably needs a catchy name like "Mutantology")
misterdeath
From the Great Old Boards A list of sciences. Pick one that looks cool... http://www.herogames.com/oldForum/Champions/000241.html Chaos Theorist doesn't seem to be on the list (admittedly a quick glance) D
Ghost who Walks
Lets see, Scientists I've had appear: ~Geneticist studying mutants, and running a center for their research in New Mexico ~Metahuman Docotr who worked for PRIMUS, studying the metahumans they brouht in (who usually came in unconcious and badly beaten, for some strange reason) ~Physicist studying alternate dimensions, who creates a device to travel to them ~Roboticist who built a robotic exoskeleton to allow a group of peaceful aliens to travel to other planets. The aliens were unable to survive zero-Gravity. ~Xeno-Anthropologist alien who came to Earth to study humanity. Deciding Earth needed better leadership, he started his own Presidential Campaign. (Yes I know an Alien doesn't qualify to be President, but it was still fun) Note: I'm a fan of 1950's Scifi, were the scientists are gods. TaxiMan
A 4-issue comic titled "The Coffin" was about a very unique scientist. He studied souls, and developed a plastic that was impenetrable to soul-stuff. First issue, he gets mortally wounded and falls into the vat of liquid plastic. He dies, but since his soul is trapped in the plastic, he is still walking and talking. Really good story, and a unique scientist to boot. Bartman
Etymology- Study of the origin and historical development of a linguistic form as shown by determining its basic elements, earliest known use, and changes in form and meaning, tracing its transmission from one language to another, identifying its cognates in other languages, and reconstructing its ancestral form where possible. Give him a few dozen languages, a few language KSs or SciSs, cramming for languages only, and a universal translator with the extra time limitation. Oddly enough, this is the coolest idea I have heard in a while.I just don't know why.
MisterD
Crypto-biology or Crypto-Zoology Study of mythological creatures.
CraterMaker
How about Sonoluminescence? We used this ground breaking science in a Call on Cthulu game and it was a hit.. here's a link http://www-phys.llnl.gov/N_Div/sonolum/ Nifty neato, definately.. -CraterMaker

Glad you liked it. I've been playing with the idea for a while so it seemed natural to post it here. It is a game way of playing all those chracters in Sci-Fi etc. who are able to pick up languages and communicate within a few minutes/hours. Think Daniel in Stargate or Hoshi on Enterprise. Crimson Arrow
When you say "unique" do you just mean "unusual"? There aren't going to be many fields of study where no one else at all is involved. One that I used as a basis for a speedster character I had was a doctor specialising in the study of the metabolism. So another question I would ask is do you have ANY ideas for what archetype you are considering playing? At a stretch, most sciences can be related to the origin of powers. Even Mathematics! Think of Johnny and Jesse Quick and their speed formula (whatever it was called). Of course, the science might be entirely unrelated to the powers too. Captain Britain was a scientist, but his powers (well, originally), were mystical in nature.
Fireg0lem
How about a psychologist specializing in an unusual field? For example, the (noncriminally) insane, or maybe even more specialized, like multiple personality disorder, savant syndrome, autism, etc.
pinecone
How about a good old parapsychologist? Hmmm I wonder what his power set will be......
Rechan
How about a dual Psychologist/Sociologist. Not only is he interested in the mental state of the criminal, but also the reasons for what he does, but what he does has effects on others. Basicly, using criminals that he fights as case studies to further his ideas and help shape them.
Edsel
Teratology What about a teratoligist. Teratology is the study of monsters. He could study the theoretical sicence behind popular monster legends. That ought to produce interesting results.
Storn
How about sociology... yeah, I know, pretty basic... except this dude/ette's theory is that Pop Culture helps support paranormal super powers. That the collective jungian will is creating some or all (depending on your campaign) superheroes and villains. As a result, he/she gets their own... but they get stronger when there are witnesses. Or add'l powers.
Pteryx
In my character's honor... ...I have to pipe up and suggest crystallography. Look a little into crystals, geology, and optics (the way light behaves when it passes through a crystal is important enough in their study that your character would probably have a Familiarity). I recommend Simon and Schuster's Guide to Gems and Precious Stones. Real crystals are actually pretty fascinating (and eminently stealable!) and fantasy crystals are a staple of many, many genres -- I'm sure you and your GM will have plenty of material to work with. Your lab would be stocked with equipment for growing various kinds of crystals as well as gemcutting tools and the like. -- Pteryx
Vorsch
Science the study of study methadology of primative cultures Your guys a alien, is interested in the science of primative culture scientific advancement methods. Lets himself get captured all the time, for disection , probes etc. character has all the best stealth powers, desolidification, invisibility, shape shift , all defences, regeneration etc so he can survive this for his graduation thesis. zornwil
Animal and plant sciences, particularly behavioral and (if allowed) paranormal ones, are great for tie-ins to super-powers.
