  1. Re: Steampunk/Victorian fantasy setting questions http://www.studiofoglio.com/index.php4 Girl Genius by the ever popular Foglios has great examples of SteamPunk (I actually think Kaja Foglio is credited with coining that phrase). There was Steel in Victorian times (swords were still in fashion) and since you are using the Fey Folk, you can have them create some kind of Magical alloys. The English used bolt action rifles with cartridge ammo back then. Rent a copy of Zulu or Zulu Dawn which are movies about the Battle of Roarkes Drift during the Victorian Era. Lot's of info to be found out there about the Victorian Military and their weapons. Yes, I will also put in my "sounds freaking cool" props to you.
  2. Re: Does anyone use this rule? I don't think CE is a good way to do the suit....invisibility to sense group: Sight possibly better. It's been awhile since I looked at the rules but I believe there is a way to make things undetectable to a sense group. Is it Stealth as in a "cloaked" suit? Or does it mask sound as well? You could give the character the skill of Stealth that way he makes his roll and is stealthy to hearing as well as sight. I like the flashlight explanation. I've seen it written so many ways as well. The simplist way: CE: Illuminate dark places with a limited range. I think Comic's last principle is a good one. I know GM's who hate it when rules rapists go to town on a power. Theres always an easier way.
  3. Re: Another Magic System... Can't read your document yet (damn Net Nazis at work) but I will say that the Fantasy Hero campaign I played in had Channelers as well. You had a Channeling Potential which was based on your EGO....like an Esper.....you also had to buy a separate END Reserve to store the energy needed to channel. There was a chart to roll on to determine which Weaves you were strong in. It was left up to the player to design his own weaves (basically powers built with big time limitations: Gestures, Incantations, etc). It worked out well and we had several Channeling Orders set up. We even had Sub-Channelers: BladeMasters (who were limited to channeling through a sword....fire blade, armor piercing, missle deflection, more speed, etc) and Spirit Archers (channelers who only channeled through a Bow....). The website for the campaign is no longer up, but I do remember a game my friend ran at ConQuest where Bruce Harlick, Wendy, Glen Thalane and other Old School Hero types played in and loved the system.
  4. Re: Story telling skills: Next scene Dr. Destroyer Knowing his scarred visage would give the Heroes pause, Destroyer slowly lifted his helmet. The Heroes, "veterans" of a few years of service to the City, visibly flinched at the true face of Evil. Destroyer ginned, pausing to let the effect set in. When he was satisfied with the level of revulsion he finally spoke. "You look upon the Face of Dr. Destroyer. You look upon the Face of your DOOM!!" (I've always loved GMing Destroyer....)
  5. Re: List of Professions Driver - Required: Transport Familiarity: Land Based Vehicles, Combat Driving, Perk: Drivers License, PS: Driver Recommended: Conversation (have to be able to chat with clients/employer), bodyguarding, bump of direction, contacts (ie club bouncers, restaurant owners/maitre'd's Related Skills: Weapons Familiarity: small arms, Martial Arts Hope that helps
  6. Re: Giant Brick Tricks A fellow player came up with an interesting version of the rubble attack. It was a Transform with an AOE Cone linked to an Entangle. The special effect was the Brick pounding the ground and causing a shockwave which transformed solid ground into rubble with the entangle being the rubble.
  7. Re: Blocking/Counterstriking... Knockback (unrelated) I always thought that Block gave you the Counterstrike first regardless of Dex.....you basically interrupt their attack and attack back....they of course can do a Block of their own (Lord how many Fantasy Hero battles did we have where that happened...)
  8. Re: Disads, how would one do this one! Just curious.....wouldn't he be either contained somehow or locked up until needed because of the potential for disaster? You may have to buy some kind of containment armor for him or something. It's an interesting concept, but leaves room for all kinds of trouble.... although it's a definite challenge Role Playing wise....
  9. Re: Best ever reason to NOT be a superhero... My only super power is being able to locate a bathroom in a 10 foot radius. I guess it would come in handy if The X-Men really needed to pee.....
  10. Re: Newbie Question: How Long Should It Take.... Hero Creator Software.....it's the best. Does all the math for you, you just fill in the blanks. There are also some cool excel versions of character sheets in the downloads section of this website that have all the formula's built in as well. You should try building basic character's first, then move up to more complex one's when you are comfortable. Trust me, I've been playing Hero for alot of years and just recently started building Multiple Power Pool and Variable Power Pool characters.....
  11. Re: Things you do to acheive immersion
  12. Re: Hero Sysem 4, D&D, convert or not Exactly.....D&D is so "locked in" to what you can and can't do...there isn't alot of flexibility..........
  13. Re: Hero Sysem 4, D&D, convert or not D&D is Evil......stay with Hero. You can make a Knight's package, Wizard's package, etc.....easy to do, and there are plenty of examples in the Hero books of package deals.....as I've said before.....Hero isn't "weak" in any genre.....that's it's beauty.....you can play any genre you want...just adjust the stats, powers etc. In our Fantasy Hero world we had "channelers" (I know blatant WOT rip off....) who used points to build "weaves" which were basically powers....ie fireball is an EB with lots of limitations (gestures, concetration, incantations....). Then again, I'm biased...besides Shadowrun and L5R...Hero is my favorite system.
  14. Re: Help Requested: Name my Canadian team and it's members 1) Sword that cuts through anything, some phasing, decent physicals. Riposte....it's a French Fencing term......or Fleche (pronounced Flesh) 2) Um...some sort of blaster. Northern Lights....he does look like a Mystic 3) Rough and tumble outdoorsy brawler type, possibly regenerating The Crazy Canuck..... (cheesy I know) or possibly Yukon Jack or the Lumberjack (all images of burly Canadian He-man types...) or possibly Brawny...have him wear a red flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.. 4) Fire blaster FlameThrower 5) Speedster (About Mach 1 top speed) Blur 6) Stretching. Yeah, I know, kinda obvious. Not sure on this one...maybe the French word for stretching..... 7) Brick battlesuit. Good movement, Superleap and Tunneling. Not sure on this one......maybe Captain Canada or the Crimson Canadian....
  15. Re: Seeking suggestions on speeding up the Hero System To speed combat up we used to use a dry erase board where we took electrical tape and a made a grid. Character names by rows......columns...DEX, SPD then phases 1-12.....arrange the characters names by DEX, black out the phases they don't go on.....then put an x when that phase is done.....or put an H for held action.....that type of thing. It worked great....The GM would say....character A your Dex count what do you do....you have 5 seconds to tell me.....sped things up.....he even used it at a Con game and folks were amazed at how quick combat went.
  16. Re: WWYCD: Stark Contrast
  17. Re: Powered Suits + END reserves Good example...cuz like the book says..."everything uses END"...lifting your arm, grabbing a glass, etc.....
  18. Re: WWYCD: Stark Contrast Depends on which of my characters.....Siphon my strength draining speedster would catch up to him and drain small bits of strength until he fixed the issue.....Granite (who was changed to living rock by messing with Steroids...) would just assume it was more bad luck and a further transformation.....Heavy Metal, my Mutant master of Sound would play Mr. Manichean a "private concert" until he fixed things......my namesake Boomer the Confederation Marine/Initiate Clansmen would take him prisoner and introduce him to interrogation Marine style.....
  19. Re: Works Well in the Source Material, not so Well in the Game Amen brother....you're preaching to the choir so far.....I've always found it odd that the street level guy doesn't get his butt kicked by the Galactic eater of worlds, but gets jumped by 50 thugs and has issues with that......thank God for Hero system!!!!
  20. Re: movies/t.v. vs comic books The Spidey web-shooters in the wrist thing kind of bugged me in the movie, but only kind of. I understood the change because of the change in Origin Story.....Genetic-enhanced Arachnid as opposed to Radioactive Arachnid......... As for X-Men, lots of mish mash of story lines, but basic personalities of the characters are fairly spot on. I always remember Batman travelling around the world looking for the best Martial Arts Masters to teach him. Also the Origin of a Young Bruce falling in a cave and being scared by Bats is spot on. And the Bat in the house giving him the idea for Batman is spot on as well. Although his first outing as a "Hero" he just wore black and a ski mask.........then decided that the crooks weren't afraid of him, and fear would be his best weapon......thus the quote "Criminals are a superstitious lot. I must become something that will instill fear in them." I think the original batmobile was a Studebaker or something like that with a shield on the front of it. and I agree with Blue....Clooney sucked as Batman....what was with the nipples on that bat suit.....that was stupid...
  21. Re: Lines in the sand... That's what I love best about Hero is the vagueness.....it's what makes it so you can run any kind of campaign and create any kind or power, device, etc......In our Fantasy Hero campaign, the GM doesn't like the whole idea of magic spells, spell books, etc.....he likes the way Robert Jordan did magic in TWOT....so we have Channelers who make weaves using the 5 elements....spells are bought as powers....fireballs, bonds, damage shields, etc........so I say Yay for vagueness...
  22. Re: How to Overthrow the Alien Overlords? The way to have fun and have it be a long campaign is to not have the Heroes be Supers.......have them be normal Humans who are fighting back against their Alien Oppressors.......first game have them find a store of low powered alien weapons, etc.......my group was doing a game that took place 51 years after an Alien invasion. It was interesting because the greatest items my character had were a lead pipe and a tupperware lid (defensive weapon and something to eat off of.....)
  23. Re: On Fantasy [G.R.R.M.] Martin has become one of my new favorite Authors. I need to get ahold of Feast of Crows.......
  24. Re: What would you recommend? Best thing to do, is to take the fine suggestions presented to you in the replies and make a couple of characters. See how powerful/not so powerful they turn out. Then anticipate the power gamer or the rules "raper" (the master of the loophole......) and think on what character they would build. There are also lots of suggestions in the Core Rulebook. Good luck and welcome to the Hero world.....

    Ho Ho Ho.

Re: Ho Ho Ho. That's also the time they decided to scrap the scene where the Characters get attacked by the Evil, flesh-eating Corn-Eyed Brown Trout......
