  1. Star Fleet Battles anyone??? SFB would be a good game to reference this information from. I am not sure if they have stats on the latest and greatest (I stopped playing a few years ago) but they give good info. Some online SSD's (schematics of ships) are: http://jgray-sfb.com/ http://www.dragonlair.net/tass/tass/index.htm The number of shuttles vary with the size of the ship and the duty of them. In SFB, there are 4 types of shuttles: Admin (carrying people), Attack (carrying low grade ship weapons) Wild Weasels (ECM unit) and a scatter pack (multiple missiles). There was usually only one shuttle bay, since it was easier to keep all the 'vehicles in one hanger'. For safety reasons, only one shuttle could launch and/or land at a time although the gates looked like two could fit through IF the pilots were EXTREMELY careful.
  2. If you look at the illustrations in comparison to the comliness of the character, a 10 is quite stunning alone. I am not sure about current systems, but back with the first ed rules, there was an obvious difference between Howler (Com 20) and Icicle (Com 10) with Shrinker (Com 14 I believe) also nicley defined.
  3. It's not the confessions I dislike... it is the pennance.
  4. Throw it at him while you are in a plane 2000 feet in the air. Coins burying themselves in cement sidewalks from the Empire State Building has happenend.
  5. Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: REALLY visible power effects I AM the GM! ((Insert proper maniacal laughter here))
  6. Have her have spanish ancestory And I like: Salsa Tango
  7. A Alternate Advanced Allied Autonomous Apex
  8. Re: Re: Unless you plan on mixing present and future vehicular weapons together in one game Then ya answered me question.
  9. problem #1 If you like acronyms, I can suggest: Project SET (Special Enforcement Team) Project METRO (Muntant Enforcement and Tactical Recovery Operation) COP (Counter Operation Project) I could come up with more, but work is callin'.
  10. Re: Re: Re: REALLY visible power effects For the 'bullet in transit' thingy, I apply the visibility being the noise the gun makes when fired. Whereas a laser or TK can make almost no noise when used, the energy trail shows where it came from. A gun going off (in most normal circumstances) you may not SEE the bullet travel but your hearing will tell you where it came from. turn in the direction of the bang and you see the gunman holding the device. Now, you can argue the fact of 'well what if he had it in his coat, or folded up in a newspaper'. I would still allow them to see where the bullet came from in the manner that as they turned to look in the direction of the bang, other factors zero out the guy (such as everyone near him running away, some smoke coming from the concealed area, etc.) Visible doesn't always mean 'to sight'
  11. As far as AOE Hex being invalid in a Fantasy setting... Do you include cover modifications? Crossbowmen behind a low stone wall can basically double their DCV this way. And someone in an arrow slit or murder hole is all but protected. AOE Hex takes away this defence. As for Supers, sure average DCV is 7-9 but what about those unaverage ones that have the DCV of 11+? I suppose you could spread the attack. And don't forget those pesky Martial Artists that can suddenly add 5 to their DCV with an abort to Martial Dodge. Also, if there are multiple targets in one hex (let us say 4 evil pixies are all flittin' over a special power enhancing stone in one hex) the AOE will nail them all. Granted, this is a VERY rare occurance but if your enemy is packed in tightly enough, it could still be useful. As with the other advantages that are 'overpriced', I am sure that there are other examples where they are VERY effective over the typical "target standing there with average DCV and normal defences in the open".
  12. Re: REALLY visible power effects Actually, I would rate this as an obvious focus. Being visible means that it is easily apparent where the force is coming from. A fired laser can be traced back to its source. For TK visible effects, I require some sort of a glowly beam - such as Green lantern's ring.
  13. Unless you plan on mixing present and future vehicular weapons together in one game My only question would be - are the offensive and defensive capabilities in Star Hero proportionate? If the main gun of a space destroyer only did 2d6 RKA, I wouldn't mind as long as the def was appropriate and that personal weapons only did one pip.
  14. To a point, I agree. Especially when people rely on them to pull them through everything (or blaming everything on them)instead of just picking yourself up by the bootstraps and doing it. However, there has been more and more scientific discoveries of things that, again, were thought of as 'magic' that are turning out to have now quantifiable results. The biggest one recently is the body's energy, aura, chi, whatever you wish to call it. Held by mystics and martial artists for centuries, there has finally been enough people willing to open their eyes and explore those areas. I have personally debunked psychics in the past and always approach the idea of magic as a con. However, some things have happened to me that had me think otherwise. Luckily these things now fall under the above areas of chi so I don't feel too silly anymore. But this is a perfect example of what is taught as magic is now being defined as science.
  15. Philly PA for me Although I haven't been there in a decade plus, I use it as the base of my game since I spent some time in and around it while goin' to school. The geography is set around 1990 - back when no buildings could be higher than ol' William Penn - but the true time is current. As I am out here in California, I figure that using a real city is something people can relate to (I found it on the map!) and if they ever go there, they can have fun (So here's Liberty Park. I kicked Poltergeist's ASS right here!). Meanwhile it is on the other coast so I won't have players saying "Why not use the Bart Station at Powell?" or "Mission and Castro don't cross!".
  16. I suggested the PVC experiement due to the fact that people often do not have the same musculature as would a fantasy character. I personally can't come NEAR your abilities of lifting weights but I am sure that my barbarian character would make you look like a wimp. Instead of trying to guessimate what a 7 pound claymore in the hands of a halfling with a 17 strength would translate to for me, I figured I'd suggest just the awkwardness of the size of the weapon - and direct size ratios are rather easy - especially for anyone who can do the math of Hero. The other trouble with a 5 gallon pail filled with water is that, I believe, it weighs close to 50 pounds, has no real handle and the weight balance in comparison to a sword is all wrong. A sword could weigh 20 pounds but with proper balance (which most good fighting swords are made) you can fight rather effectively with it. Since I teach a Japanese sword class, I just tried to figure out how I would show one of my students the folly of their ways.
  17. Heh, learning about Wicca from Charmed is along the lines about learning Medieval History from D&D. Trust me, most wiccans don't like the portrayl of the religion in the show. There is barely any resemblance to the religion in it. There is a common belief amongst some wiccans and pagans that George Lucas used wiccan influences in his creation of Star Wars and The Force. I personally see it as 'wishful thinking' of the wiccans. Ya know how you can view something in a certain way and make a connection? Although I'd love to see a light saber used as an Althalme. (A joke just for the wiccans out there - even if I spelled it wrong). But the idea that we are all connected and that through that connection a certain amount of change and control can be achieved is quite common. I think my favorite example is someone who used a spell to make their car "invisible" to police so they won't get a speeding ticket. In this case, invisible means that someone will look at it and you really won't think about it - as if it wasn't even there. However, they did it so well that their car became invisible to everyone and got into 3 accidents in one month.
  18. Your idea sounds good. I would say that on the average, those who use their abilities in day to day activities, and have the same stat number, do the job similiar enough that there is no real difference. If, however, you are competing where every pound and every inch is taken into account, I would do something along the above lines. Remember that a game inch is basically 6 feet. Competitions come down to inches. So I would say that someone with 6" of leaping can leap 36 feet +/- 6 inches (not game inches) for each point above/below a Strength roll. If you wanted to have even more variety, you could include a dex roll as a complementary roll to the Strength one (someone who moves just right gets a few more inches).
  19. If I am not mistaken One brother would feel the more intense emotions/sensations of the other while the original would feel nothing. I remember watching Chong having his feet lit by a candle and he acted as if he felt nothing while Cheech was hopping around in pain.
  20. The Sauron Size ring is magical and 'resizes' itself to the wearer. It was even depicted in the first movie in the Prologue. As for a 3' person swinging a 5' sword, it is a matter of manuvering and leverage and nothing to do with strength. Forget about the 2x4 as afterall the character is supposedly a trained adventurer and everything, has a 15 strength meanwhile your average gamer has half that and so on. Dunno what the 10 pound weight at the end is suppose to represent as that basically adds over a hundred pounds to the wood as well as change the HELL out of the balance (insert exponential weight/distance equation here) If you are REALLY into proving the point, go out, give your friend an 11 foot piece of PVC (what he would wield if he was a hobling with a 5.5 foot sword and a 12 foot piece costs about 2 bucks - plus you can make boffer weapons out of it afterwards!) and you take one that is 4 foot in length. Have him wield it by the bottom Two feet of the pipe (Mark it with tape) and see how well he does against you. Low blocks become a REAL bitch. Then have two more friends pick up 4 foot pieces and see how well he does. You don't even have to try hard and hopefully he'll get the idea.
  21. Google search for "Medieval City Maps" ? Sorry, but I did do such a search on Hotbot and found this site: http://historymedren.about.com/library/atlas/blatlondex.htm Just clicked on one or two but they look good. If you are looking for large, paper maps though, I would suggest roaming around the SCA homepage (http://www.sca.org) as I know a friend who picked up quite a few good ones from one of the regular vendors in the West.
  22. howdy from another East Bayer. But, like mentioned before, what general class of gadgets are you looking for? Does your character already have a good set of basic defences? Does he have a good way of getting around? Does he have any offensive cababilities outside of the Gadget Pool? What is the 'background' of the character? Is he just a general gadgeteer or does he have a 'theme'? I ran a gadgeteer in a game that was actually a 'baseball player' who used a variety of baseballs and bats with different effects.
  23. Congratulations, JmOz, you just described the basics of modern day wiccan beliefs.
  24. Re: Re: Re: Re: Moses Define "few and far between," as from my studies there were periods in human civilization where 'witches' or 'those in league with satan' were arrested, tortured or condemned in large numbers. As for the purly herbalistic healers whom would be charged as 'witches', I would feel safe saying that there was at least one a year in Europe between 5th and 15th century.
