  1. Re: A few questions 1) Appropriate challenge is based on a few things. How many points your player's characters are built off of, the CVs (OCV, DCV, etc...) of each, the DCs (Damage Classes) and the amount of defenses (resistant and non-resistant) that all parties have. 2) HERO System is just a system. So, you, as the GM, have to set your limits based on what you want from the players for a given campaign. I don't know about sidekick, but I believe FRED (5th Ed. Revised) has some examples of AP limits based on type of game (Superheros, Heroes, normals, etc...). The higher you set the AP limit, the more powerful, in general, your player's characters will be.
  2. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible Relativity also breaks down under other extreme conditions. Think about all the problems physicists are having in trying to merge Quantum Mechanics (the realm of the small) with Relativity (the realm of the massive/fast). As far as I'm aware the two haven't been successfully integrated into each other (solutions with probability greater than 100%...). Creates interesting problems when studying things like blackholes.
  3. Re: No Horses For You Most players I've played with don't abuse the animals, but no game time was wasted having the characters maintain them. Players get to an inn, pay the fee for room and board and stable... stable boy does the work if players don't say otherwise... Overland travel... no more than 8 hours a day to allow for setup and breakdown of camp (which includes dealing with aforementioned animals). Push them and they suffer the penalties that players would from a forced march... This was all just assumed to have happened unless it was important to the story that an event occur and interrupt them.
  4. Re: Learning from the mistakes of others Your HERO GM doesn't let you change out powers and such as you gain XP and alter the direction of your character?
  5. Re: Handcuffs on a budget Hey, what about putting them on someone's ankle???
  6. Re: Order of the Stick I think that is the book that the NPC is holding up in his hands
  7. Re: Order of the Stick I haven't been able to get to the site in the past two days.
  8. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible One of the Bose-Einstein Condensate experiments seemed to show that a pulse of light was leaving the BEC as much as 60ns before it even entered.
  9. Re: The Lost Origin of Evolution Rats survive without humans in lots of places. Look at the damage and devastation they cause when introduced to islands with ground birds on them (and no humans living there).
  10. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible Actually we have seen effect followed by cause with light and a Bose-Einstein Condensate where the light was emitted before it entered.
  11. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible IIRC Einstein showed examples of causality that were backwards (effect before cause) due to relativistic effects.
  12. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible Read it again, speed of light isn't broken as the craft moving this way is still obeying the rules of relativity. It is just finding a unique way around the issue by stretching and folding space around it. Light moving through the folded space is still moving at the speed of light, even that given off by the ship, heheh.
  13. Re: Fantasy Hero 101 Actually quite a lot of women play RPGs. More than half the groups I've been in in the last decade have had at least 1 or more female players in the group. They were either SOs of one of the other players or friends of the other female players in the group. My guess is that they are less likely to join something like a pickup game of strangers at a store than to play with friends for reasons such as personal security and comfort. I don't think I've seen very many single female players (or even just single females) in my 15 years of hanging out at my FLGS. Almost all the females that come into the store come in with someone else (usually their SO). Probably helps keep us single guys at bay, heheh.

  15. Re: We Loves Us Some Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs I like this a lot more than someone who does away with them completely because they are "boring" or "unimaginative".

  18. Re: Gith, flayers and othe psions Gith and Mind Flayers are the IP of Wizards and were never released under the OGL. So, you won't find them in things like the SRD online.
  19. Re: Handling day and night on infinite plane? A point source of light an infinite distance away from an infinite plane will appear to be always overhead no matter where you are on the plane and so won't need the contrivance of multiple sources and such. Setting/Rising are just part of the magic that is the plane. E.g. the sun blinks every-so-often just as a person does which causes night and day (takes a while for it to close and open due to its size, heheh).

  21. Re: Stopping Natural Disasters in Champions? Doesn't matter how strong the character is. Without something to push against, he won't be able to move the object one iota from its course. If he gets tossed at it by another super (or does some really impressive Hulk leaping) then only his mass and velocity matter at the moment of impact. So, at this point it would be better to have a Super that has a form of flight whose SFX works in the vacuum of space (e.g. superman's flight). Then you just have to impart your flight onto the meteor to alter its course. No need to shatter it (unless it gets really close before being noticed).
  22. Re: Stopping Natural Disasters in Champions? Making waves on the surface won't do anything to blunt a tidal wave as the actual energy of the wave is coming towards land from under the surface. The wave slows down as it rides up on the land shelf and the water above builds up. This is what creates the rising wave that one sees on land. Out on the ocean it can pass beneath even a small sailboat and do little more than slightly rock it, heheh.
  23. Re: Complex and unnecessary Well, then maybe things that are larger and more complex shouldn't be modeled as a single unit, but as a collection of subparts. If you hit a carrier with a missile, it isn't an all or nothing kind of attack, but can damage various subcomponents without doing any real appreciable damage. So, something the size of the earth really needs to be thought of in terms of hex Volumes. Want to damage the earth with a drill or a space laser then becomes the same thing. Do damage to a volume. If you're able to exceed the total of Def/Body for that volume then you get to damage the next one down. Targeting a carrier, well, you might hit the carrier, but unless you are a good shot from a long range, then you aren't likely to hit the same area as the last strike. So, you can't destroy the comm towers if you are hitting the flight deck with that missile, heheh.
