  1. Re: Name Generator NetNemesis316: This link is for a role playing utilities files area that used to be on the BBS Red October and now resides on Shelley Chrystal Mactyre's board. There are character name generators for Heroes, Old English, Normals, and For Teams (Better than the one published, no offense) They even allow for the lists that are used to generate them to be customized. And since they are more DOS like they should run on about anyone's system. Hope you like them. http://www.mactyre.net/october/ROLEUTIL/Files.html Thanks for the assistance. Not only does the programs look like great tools for more than just the character names but also for other aspects of adventuring. Although if anyone else has other possibilities I would like to hear them.
  2. As a GM are you tired of having all the super-powered beings having some name in the form of Captain Astonding, Mister Miricle, Electrolisis, or Ultrapower(wo)man? I would like to find some program that will create some random name for super-powered campaigns. Recently I did a search for name generators and all of them would either create a name that would work for the character's secret ID, some fantasy campaign, or something else along that line. I would like the assistance of all you great Herophites out there in Heroland.
  3. Re: Choosing between two constructs for a power The method that I prefer is the Drain. Not only that it is less expensive (for a villain there is no such thing as "too expensive") but also that the Drain will more easily represent things like ability-sapping drugs that need to be tailored to some particular ability, a mentalist who can convince people that the ability is getting weaker, or most abilities that result on loss of ability. The purpose of the Suppress is something that makes little sense to me. Everything that can be done with Supress can be done more efficiently (and with lower cost) by using a Drain. Even power-dispelling restraints can be properly simulated with a Drain using the disad "ability returns when disabled" (-1/2).
  4. Re: Speedster Concept and Creation Question As a GM I would want to ask the player some questions about the alien serum. Among these would be how easy it would be to acquire more serum. I would say that if he has an unlimited supply then it would simply be the SFX and gain no bonus. However if the components can be obtained at the local Walgreens then the character would get a minor bonus. Basically I would follow the rules for having a focus. Another question is how easy it is for someone else to get the serum from him. If for some reason it cannot or will extremely rarely be taken away then it sounds more like an OHID. As for the OD portion, I agree with RDU Neil. In the real world there are scientific models that say that a person with said mass along with other modifiers should OD with this amount of drug. More often than not these models are wrong. Said person usually will be able to last longer than the model says they should or pass out earlier. As a result, in a court these models are thought of more as guidelines than actual rule. The same should be true for this character using this drug. He wuold have figured out that this amount will have this effect on him (the abilities as written), this amount most likely will cause him to OD. Just like in reality, that OD amount should not be absolute and just a ballpark figure. It will be up to the GM to determine when the actual OD amount is and any warning signs that the character is getting close to it.

    How big

Warehouses can come is many different sizes depending on the place that it is built, what the original use was, who built it, etc. A 5x5m shed could be considered a warehouse for the home. They can also be several hundred meters to any given side for huge industrial uses. With this in mind I would simply state that the place found had a certain dimension that best meets the purpose that is is wanted for now. Since most industrial warehouses are generally one main room with several small offices set to one side it would be easy to modify the place to current needs. Several stores sell removable room dividers and hardware stores can supply the materials to build perminent walls. Other things like lockpicking tools, chem sets, etc will be harder to obtain, but that is what contacts are for. Of course if this is the base for some villain, then said villain can use villany to obtain said needs.
  6. While I was playing under 4e, I had the entire charges problem solved, then they went and changed things. To make things simple, I still mostly use the 4e rules. That means that if charges are put on the MP then that is the total amount of charges available. If the individual slot is where the charges is then all the charges apply to only that one slot. 30 Crossbow & bolts (60 point reserve): OAF, 16 charges 3u 4d6 RKA 3u 12d6 EB In this case then there is a total of 16 charges for both slots, however they are to be applied. 30 Bow & Arrows (60 point Reserve): OAF 3u 4d6 RKA: 16 charges -0 3u 12d6 EB: 16 Charges -0 However this set-up will mean that each slot will have 16 charges that can only be changed under appropiate circomstances (the use of XP).
  7. While Dr.Anomaly's TARDIS sounds like it would make a good working model, the actual TARDIS from the series seemed to be more of a plot device that the writers would use if there was no other method to get the great and egnimatic Doctor into trouble. looking at the TARDIS in that manner I would make it so that it is actually not written up in any form and make the GM in control of the design at any given time. Whatever the format, provisions, gear, etc are at any given time will be determined at the time that it is desired, what it is desired for, commonness, and other factors that apply. This can mean that today there will be the sonic screwdriver that the Doctor loves will be in the mech lab but tomorrow it could be in the bio lab if it is there at all. In addition while the operator might make a successful roll to tell it to go to London on 23 Aug 1698 it actually will pop on the Enterprise during WWII, or some place not on the Earth.

    Plutians

Humanity is exploring the outer planets in this system and discovers that there is intelligent life on the planet Pluto. Since Pluto recieves extremely little solar energy I realize that this life would have to be extremely resistant to temps that humans concider freezing while having a hard time with human comfort temps. The thing that I am wondering about is what they would look like, any abilities that they might possess, any problems that might arise from that low-grav planet, etc. I greatly appreciat any and all advice that you great ones would offer to me.
  9. When I read the story I though that Doomsday was meant to be an equal to Supes in all the physical abilities but not the mental. Although he did possess a serious lack of smarts he was great when it came to tatics. During combat he had determined the powers and abilities of whoever was attacking him and responded accordingly. At one point Supes figured out that he cannot fly so decided to send him to space. Halfway up Doomsday had managed to break the grip and Superman was never able to get a new gripo on him to attempt the same trick. As Twilight so nicely put things, only the JLI was able to show up to stop Doomsday and they never did possess the tactical abilities that were needed. Until Superman appeared everyone did what they wanted and actually interfered with each other more than they made contact with Doomsday. I have always wondered why the other heros of any power level did not appear until Supes had finally gone down. On that same note, where was the great and powerful U.S. military during all this. Doomsday was defenately a threat to national security.
  10. For the purposes of this one-shotter, try going simple. Since most of the con players most likely will be new to Hero so do not make things complicated (no optionals). The besst thing to do would be to get some long-running team together, then have them contacted (your choice of how) to fight some bad guy (individual or (my preference) a team). You might want to fill in the back story from before but that really is not necessary. From there on let the players have their run at the players just as if you were the GM in your own group. As far as question one goes, I am noot a legionaire, but most cons will allow independent GMs to run games so long as they follow some pre-established rules that you can find out from their website. Sometimes they require the GM to sign up in advance for the purpose of scheduling, while others will always try to keep open table for people who suddenly decide to get a game going. The best way to discover which way this con is is to go to their website. You might have to write them a question to get the answer but you do have the time to get all the details worked out. Hope that this helps.
  11. Since as he has always done things so much faster than everyone around him others would have taunted him with what they ment as insults. Everyone knows how kind children are towards one another. He could always use one of these insults as his name - Speed Demon. It will also help to install fear in any opponents he tackles.
  12. Instead of making the telepathy always on, in the 4th ed Ultimate Mentalist there is a Phys Lim that does this same thing. I do not have the book with me now but I believe that it is something like mental static for 20 points. What it does is make the telepath constantly "hear" the thoughts of those around him, occasionally to the point of granting the hero a headache (loss of CON, DCV, or some other game effect). By working with your GM, you can even get the battle helmet to lessen this problem. Hope that this helps.
  13. 12) VIPER spends some time and resources building a new hotel that is actually nothing more than a test on the local hero team. Shortly before the hotel's opening the heros are invited into the hotel for whatever reason (especially law enforcement heros). As they go through the hotel, they are given several tests of different forms, some mental, some physical, some more ego-based. After several weeks have passed, VIPER will attack the heros with attacks specifically designed to destroy the heros. Either at the hotel or the following battle, the whole thing could be publicly broadcasted for all who desire to see it. Imagine how devistating things would be if every villain afterward would just know how to defeat the heros and possibly even have the means to use the knowledge.
  14. The way that I would go about doing this would be to make the character as normal with an additional simbiote package. What is outside the package would be connected to the host, inside the package would be the simbiote. Keep in mind that Stargate simbiotes will retain all the memories of previous hosts. This can prove to some quite interesting role playing. The current host remembers (from the simbiote) some rather interesting times that some earlier host had with some PC.
  15. While I usually do not use either a secret or public identity, on the occassions that I do I tend to vary them greatly. Sometimes they are in professions that will allow the character to quickly get into the action, or at least hear about what is going on without raising questions the majority of the time the secret identity has nothing to do with the adventuring persona. Two professions that I particually like playing are either someone involved in law enforcement or being an educator, if not a student. The non-adventuring persona usually does not go into a profession that would draw attention to the adventuring persona.

    invasion

Regardless if this were to be at the start of a new campaign or introduced into some long-running campaign, I would most likely make the invasion one that the PCs would be able to stop with relatively little effort. However the invasion would leave behind agents that would have to be discovered and removed in some form. This could be by some simple means such as the alien looking nothing like any terrestrial lifeform to extremely difficult since the aliens for some reason looks exactly like normal humans. Complicating things would be if the aliens continue to possess their advanced technology or it was lost when the invasion was repealed. The less human looking they are the more of their advanced technology they should continue to possess. No matter what though, they either individually or collectively should be able to give the heros trouble whenever they meet. In addition there should be adventures that has nothing to do with the aliens, such as litigation problems, more normal villains, or the greatest problem that our heros could possess, their own selves.

    invasion

In addition to everything that Lord Laiden stated above, something else needs to be concidered. How much does the invasion force truely know about Earth? They could have had covert agents on Earth for years, centuries, or longer or this could be there first time on this newly discovered planet. Each case will have an impact as to how they will treat the planetary resistance. In the first case, they will use their covert agents to nutralize the resistance before the invasion starts. The latter case will mean that they are unaware of the nature of resistance that Earth will provide and whatever defenses that are used will most likely will be the same that they use on every planet that they come to. Something else that should be answered is if the invaders have some other force that is in opposition to them that could be called upon that will possess technology equal to them. If there is then the invaders might be trying to get warriors for the war that they are fighting against their mortal enemy. If there is not they the GM needs to come up with some other reason for why they are trying to take over Earth. Perhaps they see themselves as trying to bring the entire universe together for some noble purpose that will reveal itself only when all are of the same mind and belief.
  18. Re: Bricks and Weightlessness Hope that these suggestions help you in working the finer points of your now weightless brick. Just my $0.02
  19. Despite what I said earlier, (which I do believe) they would be a good tool to use in some campaign, especially for the more clever minded characters to find some method to foil. A good GM might say that it was actually some either extremely clever or powerful villain who had somehow convinced the local government to implement this radical new technology. Think of all the possible gaming opportunities that this would create as the heros would have to litigate a removal of the new technology, as opposed to simply slugging it out with the villain. As a matter of fact, if they do try to slug it out, the villain would simply state that these trigger-happy so-called heros are more of a menace than the heros that everyone thinks of them as. Due to this, they most likely would actually loose alot of the support that they are currently enjoying. As a matter of fact that would be the avenue that I would use if I were to use this concept in some campaign that I would run.
  20. If I were one of these supers in that realm I would at first be surprised that my powers had failed me but as time went on, I would look for ways to make lemonade from this terrible lemon. I would have developed contacts in several useful locations such as the government, the underground, organized crime, etc in addition to various skills that would not have changed with the loss of my powers. The fact that I am fighting crime would not have changed, only the methods that I use. As a result instead of going up to Dr. D and pummeling him in the face, I would start thinking and using known weakness against him combined with making him come to me for a change and taking on the gauntlet that I had devised so that when he does get to me he will be relatively weak and much easier to take out. When it comes to patroling for the muggers and low-lifes out there, I would start using more standard tech to assist me and make up for the loss of my powers. As an aside, crime fighters never truely retire, they will remember the time that they were the big hero and idol of millions and if they do not get back into action, the inaction will prove to be their most powerful opponent that will eventually kill them.
  21. Big Brother knows no Bounds!!! It is not enough that there is not any privacy in our own home anymore, now they are doing more than watching where we go and when. If they were not already doing this I might even claim that they were putting a black box into every vehicle. Even though the article is British, there is nothing to stop America from doing the same thing, especially if they see that the Brits are getting alot of money and the people do not seem to be protesting it.
  22. There are two different ways that I would handle this situation as a GM. The first would be to make is so that everyone looses their powers unles the powers were based on normal tech regardless of the nature of the powers. THis way no one would b e able to claim that so-and-so was able to maintain his powers so he should be able to as well. It is also a great way to pull in the reigns on a campaign that is getting to be too powerful to handle most challenges (such as being able to slap around Mechanon like a rag doll). The other way would be to make this even cause a type or radiation accident. Any super that was feeding off the rift suddenly finds out that any ability that he possessed would suddenly start acting strange, if at all. For a time the entire supers community would be in chaos as everyone figures out how their new abillities work. Allow the PCs to recreate their characters under the new set of rules. They could be fighting this adventure's villain and uber-brick trys to pound him when he discovers that the punch went through the villain, doing the same damage that it normally does. Personally I prefer the latter method since it will (at least for a while) put some unexpected spice into the campaign as everyone figures out how their new set of powers work.
  23. One of the great things about Champions is that all that is truely needed is FREd. With all the other books, they assume that you already possess FREd and only expand one some aspect of the game. While FREd will not have any characters to through at the PCs, they will be easy enough to create and, unlike other games that require several books just to keep even, FREd will provide all aspects in a concise manner. The only book that I have is FREd and do not feel lost in any manner. As OddHat has already stated there has been alot of changes from the BBB to FREd, although most of these have to do with powers and some talents were made into skills, new talents, skills, and perks were added. One big improvement is that the abilities of attacks and their respective defense has been greatly equalized.
  24. That is a great one zarglif69. When I read that I could not stop laughing. Of course the GM would be granting you your just deserts by placing you in the ninth level of hell after totally destroying the senerio that he has worked all those hours on. You now officially have the great respect of all the PCs here who have gone home with more that a bruse after fighting Mechanon and concidering themselves lucky to get out of there with their lives intact. I cannot wait to see what you will come up with next time.
  25. This sounds like a campaign that I would like to play in. Although I would not like the hassles of running it. I even have thought of a wicked character that would fit in with this campaign but that will come later. Basically the way that I would handle the time travel is to disallow the PCs the ability and since they can only travel between adventures make that (and any other effect) to be simply a game effect, under full control of the GM. Although I would prefer for the game not to get to the point that the PCs are chasing the great evil being or some such plot.
