  1. Re: Light or Dark Future? I agree with most of the posters on this thread. While technology seems to improve things it actually is replacing one problem with another. The diseases that plague humanity today will eventually be eliminated, only to be replaced with new diseases. The current form of pollution will be solved in some manner only to find that the solution has created its own problem(s). Perhaps we deveolp a method to allow humans to trully read another's thoughts and eliminate overt crime. In response people will only be more subtle about the crime. The Prohibition in the 1920's proved that a total ban on something is impossible to trully pull off. Introduction of non-human intelligence would only give people an outside focus for their hostility that is currently directed towards other humans. As a result the society of the future will basically be the same as the society of today is.

  3. Re: Ceator God, Destroyer God, Sub-Gods and their priests This sounds as though it would be a fun and very playable system. The thing to keep in mind would be that the magic system would be a subtle system, not the wild high power magic that is used in most fantasy games. Even the gods will not be able to through around magic missiles, however the God of Death could induce illness in people, Fertality God could induce sterility, etc. For the most part magic-using human characters will only call upon their god for their spells, not actual spells as most fantasy games portray. In addition most spells will by ritualistic although there could be nothing against preping the spell ahead of time so that only the activation of the spell is required. For the most part the action will be in a non-magical nature between humans and possibly their environment. The most important thing to remember about a system playability is game balance, not the powerlevel played in.
  4. Here is a fun question regarding the great Man of Steel. What if during high school Clark Kent had looked at several different career possibilities and selected something other than journalism. Everything before remains the same - launched from dying Krypton, lands outside Smallvile, Kansas, raised by Kents, etc. However during high school CK looked at the career posibilities and decided to go for some career other than journalism. The career could be anything. Just let your collective wild imagination go and have fun.
  5. Re: Usning nanotech in a campaign There are several beneficial uses for nanotech. Travellerne already mentioned the medicinial uses. This could be improving the body's natural immune system (immunities), regrowing lost limbs, or anything short of death (maybe even that given the right conditions). Another possibility could be engineering. If something goes wrong with the ship/base, put some nanos on it and the problem will disappear as the nanos work on it. The most extreme version would be that they could make a ship/base appear where there was nothing. They could even be the cause for several superhuman abilities. The nanos could toughen the skin making them be more resistant to damage (resistant defenses), improve muscle tone (super-strength), create an energy field (EBs, force field), or anything else that could be reasonbly (by sf rubber science) explained. These are the more common examples. I am sure that the great minds in Herodom can come up with more.
  6. Re: Enterprise NC1701A vs. Imperial Star Destroyer While the ISD does possess many, many more weapons, I still would have to give the Enterprise the edge. The SW shields were designed only to stop energy attacks as shown in episode 2. At the start of the diversionary battle, there were rifles and tanks making a constant barrage at the shields and nothing got through. Then the robots simply walked up and passed through the shields as though they were not even there. ST shields were designed to repeal both physical (torpedo) and energy (phaser) attacks. While the Enterprise's shields are up the ISD can make their shots and very little will actually penetrate the Enterprise defenses. The Enterprise could shoot torpedos at the ISD and the entire shot will reach the ship, doing full damage to the ISD. Even figuring in the increased toughness of the ISD design, the Enterprise would eventually manage to torpedo enough holes the the ISD to make them unable to do anything if not totally destroyed. The final result: ISD destroyed; Enterprise medium damage with shilds at half power.
  7. Re: Need some ideas for a mini-series Here is an amusing quick story concept : Sentinal is looking through some of his tech journals while killing time one morning when he discovers that someone has discovered a way to make tech operate more efficiently. The seminar will take place in another city and Titan and Ultraviolet travel with him all in secret identities. When they get there they find out that the seminar was nothing more than a trap put on by some villain (group) that they had defeated sometime ago and though was imprisoned, killed, whatever. I hope that this idea helps you. If you use this idea please let me know how it works out.
  8. Re: Why Is "Requires EGO Roll" -1, not -1/2 I have always had the belief that Req Skill Roll is based off the base skill, no skill levels allowed. Why should Req Char Roll be different in the since that it does allow skill levels? The way that I see things then both disads shiould be the same and not allow skill levels. If a char buys his EGO to 21- then that should be the base to work off of, not EGO of 11- with +10 EGO Levels. In the case off the latter then the base roll would be 11-, no +10 levels.
  9. Re: Object Creation The was that I handled this problem was by saying that the character could create whatever he wanted. The problem was that the amount that could be created was a tiny amount. For example if the character wanted to create gold then every 10 points would create a max of one gram, imagine how many points would be needed to get one dollars worth of gold. In addition the power costs so much time and END everytime that it is used (trying to warp reality takes its toll) that the standard character could only make one maybe two rolls before having to take time to rest.
  10. Re: What would your character do #~75 There is a simple although time consuming way that I would deal with this 'person'. I would gather the evidence that lead me to believe that he obtained the position through black magic and turn a copy of it to the authorities so that they can kick him out and at the same time I would let the media in on his secret. If neither one works then then I would sit back. After all eventually (before long) the devil that he worked through will demand repayment for the service. The more that the person goes for assistance the bigger the price. If nothing else, the devil will very effectively get him out of office, possibly before either of the first two methods can come to play.
  11. My wife's character belongs to an overt government operation. In addition to her sensory implants she also gets to drive around in a car that is similar to a purple KITT. How would someone build it? This includes which form to use, characteristics, powers, etc.
  12. OK - My wife (new to Hero) is looking for some help. She wishes to design a character which has very accute senses. Her question is how does she accomplish these things with cybernetics? Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of having them internal versus external? If they are internal how would one deal with such things as routine maintaince? One last question - she understands how it would work for sight, hearing, and touch. But what about taste and smell? i.e. such as telling if something has been tampered with.
  13. There is a character that I was wondering how to make up. The basic concept is that said character is able to control density. The simple parts are either stopping someone by making them too heavy to move (entangle) or so light that they literly be blown away (flight UBO). Here is the part that is giving me trouble. How can he increase the density of only a part of someone? Lets say someone is getting ready to punch him and he only wants to increase the density of that one hand.
  14. Re: Telepathy And Loss Of Control I would think of this more as a phys lim. It is always on but he has learnt how to tune out the noise unless he has suddenly and unexpectedly lost conscoiusness for some reason (Stun/KO). Think of the Mental Static lim from TUM 4e. Since this happens only rarely I would value it at a max of 10 points. As for regaining control again, that would be a basic, non-modified EGO roll (he has practiced for several years after all).
  15. Re: Sleeper Ships One does not need to create a special orginization that wants to wake all the sleepers right away. Try looking to our own world to get several actual originations that would like to do this. For example the Christians (or your game's equivalent) could feel that the sleepers that humanity forgot about and now rediscovering are in an unnatural state and needs to be woke up to make them right and whole according to their beliefs. For other such groups simply take a good look at existing groups and organization (or even businesses and/or governments) that for some reason would like to wake all the sleepers. And remember if the game includes non-human inteligences, then sleepers could be from these others (as part or whole).
  16. Re: Transform...Anything to Anything Here is a simple rule that would limit the power that the character would possess using this extremely powerful ability: Require some kind of roll to be able to create the object that he wants to create. For example if he wants to create a handgun then he will either need the appropiate WF or make an INT roll to understand the fine internal workings. A failure means that he does not possess the right understanding and all that the gun would be good for would be as a club. As for making things like gold, then he would have to know such things as the actual weight (not approx), density, melting and boiling points, how it reacts with other materials, etc. If he can figure all this out (not read) then I would allow him to create the gold. Basically to make this power work the character has to know everything about what it is that he is trying to make which means that he would spend most of his time studing the opperation and how-to of things, and remember that books can only teach one so much. There is no replacing actual experiance.
  17. Re: How do you Build this? Here is a quick and simple (and dirty) way that I would build this power. VPP (Mimic Power): Mimics Last Power that was Attacked By (-1/2); No Control of Change (-1); Only upto DCs of Attack (-1/2) Doing this removes the need for the nasty Absorption Power to power the VPP and GREATLY increases the versitility and usefulness of the character. However the VPP will have to have whatever the max amount that can be duped. If the character is attaced by an attack that exceeds this max the the overage will be lost (it was too much power for the character).
  18. Re: Publishing Fiction 1 - I would be interested in writing short stories. Full novels would be more than I could write at this time. I bow to novel writers. 2 - If these books were published then I definately would do my best to get them. Some time ago I asked everyone in Herodom for several books of this type and all that I got was a total of 12 books. I would definately like adding to this list. 4 - Something that I would like to see would be stories that involve several of the lesser heros. Something that might even be interesting would be stories that revolve around some villain.
  19. Re: Superleap and falling damage. While a fall is an uncontrolled drop, I would allow the character to make a DEX roll (Breakfall if the character has it) to get his feet under him. If successful then the character can effectively make a leap up at the same time that he hits the ground. I would state that every three inches of leap used will remove one die of falling damage. With enough leaping the character could effectively make a safe land from the height that a 747 flys at.
  20. Re: The great armour race... Going into the route of both magic and martial arts either one will give several powerful options that can be used. With magic every fantasy game that I have ever played in has allowed every two-bit beginning magic-user learns an attack spell that is only countered by mystical defenses. Make this attack common to all magic users and several non-magical beings in the form of a club, staff, bow, etc that will envariably in several parties that will go against the heros. Even with martial arts there are attacks that will to some degree negate the atvantages of wearing armor. This attack will not always use whatever they pass as magic in that society. As a GM make sure that several opponents that the heros meet will possess knowledge of this attack and once a successful hit is scored then the entire attack will penetrate the defenses regardless of how much there is. Hope that this helps.
  21. Re: Detect Emotions Before making a definitive answer I need to know exactly how powerful and acurate the empathy is. If the empathy is basically a high-powered, innate polygraph then the route that I would take is the Detect route. Using this method then basically the character is reading surface cues to state the emotion. As a result then the person read can attempt to conceal the true emotion through tricks that are normally used, aided by such skills as acting, gambling, etc. However if the power is able to determine exactly that the emotion is then the best route would be the telepathy route. This method will actually reach into the person's mind and allow the psi to state with much more certainity what the emotion is. However MD will stop the attack, the person read will know that the psi is reading them, etc according to full telepathy rules. Just my $0.01 - the IRS to the other cent.
