G'day I have an SF setting that I have been running games in (using Hero System and ForeSight as the ruleset on various occasions) since 1987, but which I am now putting through a major revision (its second). The premise is that Earth estalished several hundred colonies using marginal, expensive, inconvenient means of interstellar travel that were very limited and effectively one-way. Then Earth was destroyed by what is believed to have been an unexpectedly powerful weapon, but what might have been an accident in a lab researching FTL travel. (In the first veersiion these 'primary colonies' were established by an instantaneous technolgy that required preparation…

This was the inofficial moto of a very promising spacefaring poject started 1958: Orion If it would have been completed, humanity would had made interplanetary flights for 40 Years by now. There were two main problems: First, there was the fallout for planetary starts. Second, there was the cold war and the danger of a "nuclear race in space". In the end, the Partial Nuclear Test Ban treaty made it illegal. Now what about a world where it has been done and the promise was fullfilled? How would humanity live with the nulcear pulse propulsion as a common, widespread propulsion technique? While I have some ideas, I do not plan anything around that right now…

Below is a chart of what should be the optimal travel times for ships. This uses the old Traveller basis of accelerating 1/2 the distance and the decelerating the other half. This is 'straight line' physics and does not take into account having to angle for a moving planet. The formula used is SQRT( 4d/a ). I believe it is based on d = (1/2) * at^22d/a=t^2SQRT(2d/a)=tWhy then SQRT(4d/a)? There was a reason, but I cannot remember why :PI am guessing something to to with halving the '1/2' (which then becomes 4 after switching its side) but not sure. The above formula jives with a table from GURPS space though so I am happy. The initial time is in minutes, then once that…

I am working up a world. My initial thought was that it would be somewhat less dense than the Earth, with a smaller metal core. It would be significantly larger than the earth though, and have a somewhat stronger gravity field. I was intriqued by the idea of having it, due to shape or rotational speed, have a lower gravity near the equator, as it would allow even more variability in the species I want to design. According to the math from "Star Hero", it is very difficult to achieve significant decrease in gravity due to rotation. I couldn't get any significant decrease... Does anyone have "A matter of Gravity" and know how they explained it th…

Greetings, I just want to make sure that I am doing this right. If I build a system for a starship, the Active Points cost (and therefore the point total that is going to determine the currency cost in accordance to SH table) is the cost in points AFTER the additions/limitations are calculated in... right? You've seen it, that little gizmo that lets the marines know the aliens are coming in from all aides. I was wondering what different builds people might have to get this up and running. Here's my initial take: 30 Spatial Awareness (Unusual Group), Increased Arc Of Perception (360 Degrees), Telescopic: +6

I'm working on a new Star Hero campaign. One thing that came up in some private messages with members here is the concept of "Crowning Moment of Cool." For example, in Star Wars (the original movies), one Crowning Moment of Cool would be when Luke was fighting Darth Vader, and refused to fight, and then Vader mentioned Luke's sister, and Luke lost it and started laying it down on Vader. Followed by another Crowning Moment, when the Emperor tells Luke to kill Vader, and he throws his lightsaber away... What are some CMOC's in other sci-fi movies/shows? I think taking these and working backwards will also help plan a campaign.

This is giant on a scale where it's not just that we can't see what's doing it; it's that the entire makeup of the universe as we understand it can't be right if this is happening."

Admittedly, this is for the novel I'm working on rather than for a game -- though I may eventually (once said novel is published) write up the characters I create for this part in Digital Hero. In the course of this novel, the lead character is on her way to becoming a New York City police officer (in the year 2090). She's a "regen," able to regenerate lost body parts due to a medical procedure required for her to have received a whole-body transplant. While there are other regens on the NYPD at this time, she's the only WBT, so she's invited to help found a special team of cops all of whom have unusual abilities. So far I've only come up with two teammate…

Has anyone taken a look at this? Short version: in 2057, a secret group with access to nanotechnological mind enhancement is attempting to escape Earth and the corrupt corporate governments to be found there. It's fairly typical of self-published novels in PDF format, but I find myself seriously wishing to game in this world.

Hello Everyone - I'm on the verge of starting my Terran Empire game and I'm planning on putting the PC's in the typical role of roguish scoundrels, running afoul of the often heavy-handed Imperial law. I'd like to add a modification or two to the standard ship I'm using so that it has a uniqueness for a player group, I'd prefer enhancements that make it a better ship to avoid the Imperial and to get away rather than giving uber-weaponry (although I do want some space battles). Does anyone have suggestions of ship systems that they have already built that may be good for a game like I've described? Just looking for ideas that I have not thought of. Thanks! …

I just finished it, and I thought it was pretty good. The plot is just a standard private eye uncovering a tangled conspiracy that threatens all he holds dear. The main character is pretty vanilla but the supporting cast is very interesting. The book spends a lot of time exploring how the world would be different if we could make clay golem copies of ourselves. Litterally, clay. Oh, it's infused with chemicals and enzymes for energy storage and a vague structure for thinking, but it's still just clay. They just lay out the clay manaquin and imprint it with your "soul standing wave" and zap! You now have a clay man to do whatever you want. Yes, that's si…

Anyone made or seen a write-up for the sentinel squid-like robots in The Matrix movies? I'm thinking of a BBEG that's going to borrow liberally from that basic concept. (at least in gross physical form)

This is a good friend of mine's "Heinlein-esque" tale of a future where all the rich people live in space. He wrote this before Wall-E as well, and typically introduces the song stating they stole his idea So what are some other (hopefully obscure) songs one could use as a "opening theme" for your Star Hero campaign?

A long time ago, in theaters far, far away... hordes of sci-fi geeks gathered to watch the "final" *cough, cough* chapter of the galactic war that had been raging for years as Darth Vader and his Emperor tried to eliminate the Rebel Alliance once and for all. "Return of the Jedi" is celebrating its own 40th birthday by returning to Terrestrial cinemas. It will be re-released on April 28 and run through Star Wars Day, May 4. https://www.starwars.com/news/swce-2023-return-of-the-jedi-40th-anniversary May the Fourth be with you!

http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/innovation40603.asp I ran across this today, and I couldn't help but think about the universal "sensor technology" that is very common in sci-fi. Looking at how this works (especially the paragraph after the tooth images), I wonder if we are closer to something like that. Just thought I would share this with you guys.

I ran across this music in the Star Walk app. It's fantastic ambient music for that "space" feel. Astropilot - Solar Walk -- http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/solar-walk/id368611181 (You can listen to a sample of each track.) I believe it's also available on Rhapsody and other online music places. Was hoping this might be useful during a game to give the players that "sci-fi" feeling.
