But it was so hot in Qatar that the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body of Formula 1, said it's considering taking steps to better prepare drivers for rising temperatures.

Like...NOT RACING??? when the conditions are ridiculous?

I'm fairly sure there's nothing you can really do when it's 122...which was the temperature reported in 1 cockpit.  Moving air won't help much, because the air you might bring in, is near the track surface...it ain't gonna be cool.

Mind:  this was a big problem at the US Open, and at the Western and Southern in Cincinnati.  The Australian Open has a policy to suspend matches if the heat indices are excessive.

And auto racing had BETTER be the most proactive...a driver with less than full control of a car moving 200 mph is obviously an EXTREME danger to himself and anyone else on the track.

They could easily put all this to rest. All they have to do is stop racing in Qatar. A lot of money was made, but the Association was incredibly lucky nobody died or was crippled for life. I watched that race. Drivers were going off the track right and left on turns, with a record number of penalties assessed as a result. The driving looked sloppy and there was a lot of minor contact between cars, which in F1 is potentially lethal.

I'm sure the drivers were not the only ones suffering. Thousands of fans were packed into the stands, many of them foreigners just as unaccustomed to the heat and weather as the teams. How many heat-related injuries were there? Did people die?

Was anything learned from the disastrous World Cup last year? Or does the lure of Petrodollars blind those who seek them?

F1 should not race in Qatar again. Next time they may not be so lucky.

In a freak, horrible, AWFUL accident...

https://apnews.com/article/hockey-player-dies-adam-johnson-accident-nottingham-098abfe508a908cdc64bdf1b6d4f4e4e

The absolute most horrible event I have ever, EVER seen was similar.  NHL, Richard Zednik, 2008.  Scrum in the corner.  A teammate's checking an opponent, slips down.  His leg whips up and across Zednik's neck.

You see him falling ...and a moment later...one...then 2...GOUTS of blood SPRAY onto the ice.  The cross-angle shot is absolutely HORRIFYING.

The Hamlin injury turned into something worse, but nowhere near as graphic.

But they both survived.

You may have heard about the hockey accident last week last weekend where Adam Johnson died after a skate slit his throat.  Horrible on many levels...but particularly because it was 100% preventable.

In response, today, the English Ice Hockey Association mandated the use of neck guards in its leagues, altho oddly, that doesn't include the league Johnson's team  plays in.  It's not immediate, the association said, due to supply issues...ok, I get that.  It's effective 1 Jan 2024.

But why, why, WHY do so many sports require a senseless TRAGEDY to move forward with *common sense* precautions???  OK, slashed throats are VERY rare;  there's 2 well known ones in the NHL, but who knows how many across the other leagues?  The only time we'd hear about them is...well...when someone dies.  AND, this was a former NHL player, making it "more newsworthy."  #GAG.  There's another case where a puck hit a throat, crushing the windpipe.  The player was forced to retire;  his breathing capacity was reduced permanently, and obviously, that's a problem.

It took *forever* to bring in batting helmets and require them...and a long time to require them for the 1st and 3rd base coaches.  (Until, IIRC, a first base coach took a foul ball hard in the head.)  The goalie mask in hockey goes back to the 60's...but good GOSH, the goalie faces how many slap shots a game, traveling HOW fast?  Hockey helmets were required in 1979.  We still don't have a requirement for pitchers to wear helmets...despite a few cases every season of line drives smashing off pitchers' heads.  There's issues with the catcher's mask...that got required very early, but its shape doesn't deflect the energy very well.  The hockey-style masks are generally considered better at that...but few catchers use them.

It's generally the macho, tough aspect...which just irritates me beyond words.  SO stupid, at least in most cases.  Some things are harder to protect;  pitchers getting hit in the face, which is a substantial fraction of these, get nothing from any proposed headgear.  But others, like neck guards, or throat guards for catchers...take forever, and something hideous, to change the obstinate, macho mentalities.

OK, I needed that...

Action based on the death of Adam Johnson...

The Western Hockey League mandates neck guards.  There are 2 other leagues in the overall Canadian Hockey League;  they already had guard mandates.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, for whom Johnson played, mandate neck guards for their AHL and ECHL (effectively minor league) affiliates.

A hockey equipment supply company owned by a former NHL player has sold out of its neck and wrist guards.

A story in NPR reports that some of the commercial neck guards don't provide adequate slash protection;  this suggests a formalized approval process is necessary, particularly should the NHL recommend or require neck guards.  They'll want to give a list of effective products.

Imagine for a moment what the poor guy whose blade slashed Adam Johnson's throat is going to face the rest of his life. Even if he never steps on the ice again, he will have to deal with the psychic scars of having taken a human life by accident.

Years ago I asked a question on Quora about why NHL players don't get slashed with the razor-sharp blades on their feet more often. Protection is cited as the main reason, so neck guards are a good step to take.

"Glenn Maxwell defied intense pain to play one of the greatest innings in history and pull off the mother of all heists in a World Cup epic against Afghanistan in Mumbai.

A cramping Maxwell (201no from 128 balls) could hardly walk, let alone run, through the back half of a 202-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins – the biggest for the eighth wicket in ODI history – as the Aussies rose from the dead to seal a semi-final berth.

Maxwell hit his ninth and tenth sixes to bring up the first ODI double century ever by an Australian man and seal a victory that, three hours earlier, various win-predictor calculators suggested was a less-than-one-percent chance of happening."

"Suffering numerous cramps and back spasms, Glenn Maxwell was nearly forced to retire hurt but defied logic to stand and deliver one of the game's greatest knocks."

"Glenn Maxwell admitted he came close to retiring hurt during his miracle World Cup innings after suffering cramps in both legs and his back when Australia were still more than 50 runs away from victory.

In his first game back after concussing himself falling off the back of a golf cart last week, Maxwell's unbeaten double century – the first ever scored in the second innings of an ODI, and the first to be scored by any batter who was not an opener – is certain to talked about for years to come.

The 35-year-old's discomfort became increasingly unbearable as he eventually collapsed in a heap after limping through for a single.

At the time, he was on 147 and his side still needed 55 to win, and the toll of having earlier bowled his full allotment of 10 overs through the hottest part of the day had only added to his fatigue.

"We talked about coming off, trying to get some work into my back and trying to loosen up my legs a little bit," Maxwell told reporters after his 201no from 128 balls lifted Australia to an all-time comeback win."

The Manchester City - Chelsea match this morning (my time) was a real barn-burner.  Ended 4-4 on a penalty kick in stoppage time by Chelsea, after MC had gone up in minute 85 on a deflected shot that went in.

Neither of the NFL games on after that seemed particularly exciting, so I'm down in my computer cave.
