BTW, for the story in my head this is just before Action Comics #1 so there’s no costume yet. Clark has just come to New York to interview for a reporters job at the Times. There isn’t one open right now, but he gets a recommendation to see Perry White at the Daily Planet. It won't pop up again later, it won't explain the ending, and it won't do anything except possibly distract you while you try to figure out its significance. It usually takes the form of a mysterious artifact, package, or weapon that everyone in the story is chasing, though in some cases it won't even be shown.
