Ahoy, me hearties! It’s time for the first Get Your Ship Together Superdraft!

In this draft, you will select a ship, her crew, her cargo, and anything else you need to tell a compelling story. Supporting fiction is strongly recommended, as always.

We will begin the draft on Thursday, June 1st at noon Eastern Daylight Time. (Ask Siri what time that is where you live.) We will make one pick each day, including weekends, until Thursday, June 15th. That’s right, there are fifteen total picks available! Many of these will be Options, to allow you to go in whatever direction works best for your story. Your picks will include the following:

  • The Ship: Pick a ship, any ship, any era. Pirate schooner. Aircraft carrier. Modern cruise ship. Cold War submarine. Starship. Viking longboat. Ghost ship of legend. As long as it’s some kind of ship, it’s good. This is the first pick (analogous to the Location pick in most drafts). Ships are exclusive, but different iterations of the same ship (Enterprise NX-01 vs Enterprise NCC-1701-D, frex) are acceptable.
  • The Captain: Who’s in charge of this ship? This is the recognized leader of the crew. Why are they here? What are they trying to accomplish?
  • The Number One: This is the second in command. What’s their relationship to the Captain?
  • The Grizzled Veteran:  This is the old sea dog or space Marine who’s see it all, done it all, and lived to tell the tale. They may have more experience than the Captain or the Number One.
  • The Rookie: This is the new crew member—straight out of the Academy, perhaps, or a new ‘recruit’ from the streets of some nameless port city. They have yet to earn their sea legs, or the crew’s respect.
  • The Lower-Decker: Every ship has its bridge crew, its key personnel—the PCs, as it were. This guy (or gal) ain’t one of them. This is one of the folks that, while perhaps very capable and even necessary to the ship’s function, probably isn’t someone the main characters would recognize immediately.
  • The Misfit: At first glance (and perhaps second and third as well), this character has no business on a ship of this sort.  What are they doing on board, anyway? What’s their agenda?
  • The Cargo: What (or who) is the ship carrying? Why is it important that the cargo arrive safely?
  • Options (7): Use up to seven Options to fill out your story. Use them for support personnel, adversaries (some stories may not have one, or need one), unusual events, MacGuffins, whatever.

All character and Option picks are exclusive, unless there is a compelling reason for them not to be. The usual restrictions on character availability apply: Once a character is drafted, all versions of that character are off the table. Different characters with the same name/title are still okay, though. For example, if the Dread Pirate Roberts (Westley) is drafted, the original Dread Pirate Roberts (Cummerbund) is still available.

A poll will be posted on or about June 23rd and remain open for a week or so. Winners will be posted on or before July 1st.

That’s about it. What questions do you have?

If they're pirates, what should we list as cargo? Treasure? Booty? Or should we assign some sort of delivery?

Yes, certainly one of those. Go with whatever they do best / most often. Or what is best for the story you want to tell on this occasion.

Can we list the same person as The Captain and The Misfit?

There've been cases where this is, IMO, true...............

True, no doubt. But for the purposes of this exercise, these two roles should be filled by two different characters.

Captain's Log, 12th year after the Collapse (or A.C. as some are calling it)

There was a time I would written this log not on paper, but in pixels. Now, there are children who don't even understand what a Pixel is, or was. How could they, when twelve years ago, seemingly without warning, technology at the level of the industrial age just stopped working. No, this is on paper, with ink and handwritten. What a kick in the pants this is, isn't it? I remember when a computer printer was the most hated device in 9 out of 10 offices. Now, I'd give almost anything to have even a fussy one because it would mean we had electricity again, and so much more.  We took a lot of our technology for granted. It wasn't perfect, but it could be a great shield against pestilence and famine as we've learned when hospitals went dark, and crops are now tended by hand again.

The laws of physics and chemistry seem purposely altered just to reverse centuries of progress. But I have proof that out with the new, there's a return of the old. Where history is undone, mythology is arising. In short, Magic has returned.

I ought to know. I've got a doozy of a ship, and with it ,and the right crew? I'm going to find the other mythological items out there and put them to use for all of humanity. I just hope the previous owner doesn't return as well. He might be mad I've got his ride.

Ship: Skidbladnir (Finest Ship in Norse Mythology)
