Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

Re: Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

So far, the best ideas I've seen are the hospital, the hotel/casino/convention center, the cruise ship, and the airport. Out of those, I'd get the most use out of the casino/hotel (I'd have used it in my Vigilance League pulp game, for one.)

There will definitely be some cross-pollination of campaign usage between Dark Champions Battlegrounds and Champions Battlegrounds, so the locations used in the latter supplement (a park, a mall, an amusement park, and a construction site) don't need to be revisited. (Perhaps notes could be put in the DCB book to posit DC uses for the locations in CB?)

And I haven't seen mention of a Military Base...

I considered that, but frankly I think a decent military base would be too big. If I'm going to do something like that, it's going to be one on the order of Lejeune, Bragg, or Dover AFB, and I think any of them could probably qualify for their own book! :hex:

Maybe it's just because I'm in the military, but a military base would end up really boring. Most of it would be wilderness. Most of the rest would be buildings built during WWII and intended for temporary use, which have stood for so long that they are now historical landmarks and have to be kept standing. Then you have motor pools (a fancy term for fenced yards where you park vehicles), PXs (a fancy term for military-run WalMarts/KMarts), commissaries (a fancy term for military-run grocery stores), a cemetery, and a flagpole.

Although, a fair amount of that wilderness does have unexploded ordnance on it. "The last thing you hear is a loud boom. You've been killed by a Korean War era dud."

I'd really like to see a parking complex for one of the minor locations, just because of all the movie scenes I've seen where the action takes place in just such a place. Hmm, maybe the Hotel/Casioboat/convention center place has a few levels of subteranean parking? oooh, and if it was underground, you could arrange a connection to the sewers or maybe a subway stop. But if it were above ground you could have the classic movie scene where the car jumps from the second story onto the street. Decisions, decisions.

I'll second the slum idea. It has lots of stuff I could use, such as a "city is burning" scenario, or a "Riot" scenario. I could also see lots of cool NPC's in it. An underground clinic as was featured on "ER" (the 'doctor' never went to medical school, but he reads a lot, and so the local thugs force him to extract their bullets. I could see harbringer getting patched up there). You could also have some run of the mill smugglers (drugs 'n guns). A lady running a small day care in her apartment (for hostage scenarios).

Or, parking could be both, extending from a sub-basement with a subway station to upper floors.

This Hotel/Casino/Convention Center is starting to turn into a book of its own. I could probably whip out a multi-scenario book myself with just such a setting, if Steve were so inclined to let me.... ;)

Re: Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

If its going to be a hotel, most hotels in this day and age (the good ones anyway), usually contain some kind of small water park (sprinklers, cement animals, pool and a small waterslide). Don't forget the waterpark. It would be a perfect bit for those -1/4 Dont Work In Water powers or the Real Weapons in the crowd.

In fact, if you could arrange somehow to get a strong magnetic field in the water park too....

Good point. Actually, most modern (expensive) hotels have lots of stuff like this, including gyms, massage, a small clinic, a sauna, fine dining, blah blah blah. We probably need to decide how many stars we want our establishment to have.

Re: Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

Although I'm partial to either a scenario where a mysterious organization plants someone the PCs seek in a specialized or base mental hospital, or a scenario where a hotel or casino is the center of a criminal boss' empire, these aren't so hard to construct for people.

I like the earlier thing I read about a disaster scenario, maybe a chemical or industrial site with a big inferno, or a hotel in an earthquake. These can be hard to put together in a way that Dark Champions (as opposed to Champions or Sci-fi or Fantasy) PCs can cope with, plus the settings are ill-covered elsewhere. Though hotels one can find floorplans to online, but with some work from my experience.

Just weighing in. Regardless, I surely hope you make a DCB book, I will defiitely buy it (personal note - given how good the Champions Battleground book was, I would buy any modern or sci-fi Battlegrounds books; I don't really do Fantasy so probably wouldn't buy those - PS, plus Fantasy maps are so easy to find online, unfortunately for HERO). :hex:

I agree, I've bought those and they're good.

PS - I've used the missile silo and the mall.

Re: Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

Just wanted to make with a quick little update on this subject.

In the past few weeks, I've been devoting my "copious" spare time to reworking the old Harpcor Towers adventure. After doing a lot of research on how skyscrapers function, planning the general structure and profile of Harpcor Towers, and putting in a good bit of time preparing templates and core floorplans in CC2, I've finally finished Floor 01 of the building.

And there was much rejoicing. :bmk:

Now I only have 39 floors to go. ;)

Re: Thinking About DARK CHAMPIONS BATTLEGROUNDS

Some locations that one might reuse:

Outdoor shopping center/mall. (Think Century City Mall in L.A.)

Some kind of generic mansion and grounds.

Parks.

Factory.

Industrial Lab.

College Campus.

Downtown business district. (perhaps not the whole thing, but some maps for villain going beserk in the financial district are helpful.)

City Hall.

Country Club.

Someone already said police station/headquarters.

Airport.

Small Locations:

Fancy resteraunt.

Dive Bar.

Dive/transitent Hotel.

Gym/health club/boxing club/martial arts school.

Underground club/rave.

Generic small retail/false storefront.

Just brainstorming.
