Re: "Neat" Pictures

I'm surprised I was able to get this to work, but I did and it was pretty cool.

Linked for size and credit: Stereoscopic Merman!

I couldn't cross my eyes anywhere near enough to get it to work, without 'cheating'. I had to hold my finger about 5 inches in front of my nose while looking at the full-sized image, then when I focused on my finger I was able to get the stereo effect on the 'background' image.

Did it look cool?

I think this may be my favorite thing. I could never see those magic images that were so popular years ago, so I may just be overreacting to the fact that I can do this one.

It worked fine. Once I had the "stereo" image locked on behind my finger' date=' I was even able to take my finger away without loosing the image. I couldn't hold it long, though -- crossing my eyes to that extreme was stressful for my eye muscles.[/quote']

I tried this. I saw two fingers and four mermaids... then I got a headache and gave it up.

Hrm. If you are getting that, then you don't have the distances correct (I experimented and saw that when I moved my finger too close or too far, I could easily get that result). Try keeping your gaze glued to the tip if your finger as you adjust the distance from your nose. At one point, you should (IMO) be able to notice that there are three images (worked for both the Merman and Mermaid) on the screen behind your finger. While keeping your gaze focused on your fingertip, shift your attention to the screen, and then you have the best chance of seeing the image in "3D".

Or there is the traditional method of seeing mermaids. Spend a long time cooped up at sea with no women around and drink a lot of rum.

Well, that would certainly explain why the rum's always gone.
