According to my dear old Dad (park ranger at Yellowstone), the colors are alge/bacteria mixes, and give a good idea of the temperature of the water. Dark Blue is near boiling, green is around 120 degrees, yellow around 90, and the brown in the 70s iirc. Don't jump in the water, death is not fast, but it is certain.
