In his day they were actually looked down upon as "melodramatic". Alexandre Dumas was initially despised by "more serious" authors for not always writing outright tragedies, Even Les Miserables had an incredibly unpleasant ending by modern standards when the adopted daughter Jean Valjean had sacrificed so much for abandoned him on this deathbed.
