DC Suckverse?

Re: DC Suckverse?

Hi input.jack,

Surprisingly I agree with a few of your observations. The lack of backstory on Doomsday was extremely annoying and nearly a deal-breaker for me. It has since been rectified, but only marginally well-done.

However, the reactions of the rest of the cast (and the DCU), the Reign of the Supermen, Mongul's Warworld plans, the return of Superman just when he's most needed--these were great. Anyone who seriously thought that he would stay dead has never read a comic book. The story was about his death and rebirth, not about his death with a lame resurrection story added onto the end.

Now.

The electric Superman was a lame, too-long story arc that was

A. Lame

B. Too long

C. Absolutley not connected to the Death of Superman storyline. Roger Stern had left the book by that point to produce excellent Superboy stories.

In short, I agree with your opinions of the lead in, and what has happened since. It's the in-between stuff (The actual story) that we must agree to disagree with.

Re: DC Suckverse?

I always looked at comics as just another form of escapist entertainment. I started reading them when I was a pre-teen, and I loved them for the action and the colorful artwork. I stopped reading them when I was in college because I thought that I had outgrown them and I had better things to do. I came back to them in my late twenties because they really improved the quality of the storytelling, and--to be honest--I still love the colorful artwork.

I am now almost strictly a TPB reader. I wait to see if a title might be good, then I get a TPB. If I like that story, I look for more by the same writer or creative team. I have no real concept of the current continuity in either the DC or Marvel universes. I will never even try to find out what is going on on the large scale. If I see something by a writer or writer/artist team I like I will give it a spin. I'll read anything by any publisher if they give me a good storyline and at least decent artwork. To me the storyline is the key.

I love it when a writer takes an old character and does something new with it. I don't belive that any character is above being tampered with if it's done in a clever and entertaining way. I like the complex, human characters, but I also realize that it can be overdone. Titles like the Ultimates, Supreme Power, Alias, Sleeper, Villians United and Planetary are good examples of what it looks like when it's well done.

*TANGENT ALERT*

Reader: Fantastic! Now...why did your writers put us through all that cr*p in the first place?

It's because the very NEXT storyline that they were set to do was the wedding and the marriage. Unfortunately, the higher-ups said, "You can't let them get married BEFORE Lois & Clark get married on the TV show. Stretch it out."

Unfortunately, everything had been leading up to the wedding and marriage so someone suggested, "We could kill him." And since no one else could come up with anything better they agreed.

I didn't really enjoy the storyline, though I felt that the "World Without A Superman" could have been better, since there was great potential there to really underscore the many contributions Supes makes to the DC Universe on MANY levels.

Maybe Infinite Crisis will do that.

What I would like to see in the DC Universe?

Wonder Woman - Her mother is dead (or is she I can never keep track, but I think it is time she let mom rest and became Queen and committed full time to her responsibilities.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Woman

Wonder Girl I (Donna Troy) - The new Wonder Woman would be a farce. How many times has this woman died and been resurrected?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Troy

Wonder Girl II (Cassie Sandsmark) - Has actually been fairly well handled to this point, but how long will it last? I do like her as the heir though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Girl#Cassandra_Sandsmark

The Flash (WalleyWest) - Let him retire, would it not be nice to see a Superhero really finally get the reward of a fairly normal life?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wally_West

Blue Beetle II (Ted kord) - RIP and long live Blue Beetle III (Jaime Reyes)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Beetle

Darkstars (Ferrin Colos) - How could an Starbreaker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbreaker possibly overcome and Darkstar "exo-mantle" powered by a contained Black Hole? NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkstars

Captain Comet - Looks great and makes and nice return to the DC Universe. A great counter point to the other Galactic Organizations.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Comet

Hawkwoman (Shayera Thal) - RIP - To be honest I could never keep track of who is who.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkwoman

Maxwell Lord - RIP - Thank god he is dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell_Lord

Jade - Stop killing off the Green Lantern Woman damn it. She was interesting during Kyle Rayner's period as Green Lantern/Ion (Not inclueding his mom's death. Don't get me started)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade_%28comics%29

Red Star - A character who's potential has never really come out well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Star_%28comics%29

Tempest - You leave my Atlantean alone you bastards... ahem sorry, but he is one of my favourites.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempest_%28comics%29

Red Hood II (Jason Todd) Earth II or Ra's Al Ghul are the only reasons to bring this character back and the story better be good. Otherwise let him RIP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Todd

Batman (Bruce Wayne) - "This is my city" stuff has got to go. This "Righteous Human Agenda" stuff better stop. Do not try to expalain it, just write Batman properly. Let the dead rest and move on to crimefighting. The JLA should just kick him out. He has proven he cannot be trusted too many times. IT IS OVER!!! Also he always led by example. What is he doing???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman

Nightwing (Richard John "Dick" Grayson) - Two words "BLUDHAVEN & CHEMO". What where they thinking? Superman grab him by the scruff of the neck and flys him into orbit. GAME OVER. Also Nightwing has battled Gods, Titans, Alien Invaders, you name it. Surprisingly more than Batman. He has one of the best tactical minds on the planet. Your telling me he could not figure out how to defeat CHEMO or arrange his defeat? COME ON!!!

(Most of) The costumes are slightly different: the visible chest symbols are all different, and one seems to have goggles/eye coverings. Whether this means different people as the Flash, different costumes for different occasions, or that the Flash is now cashing in on marketing opportunites is yet to be seen.

Re: DC Suckverse?

Dido had said something about there different Flashes in one of his interviews. Then the speculation began that it might be Wally's twins but after seeing the color picture it seems almost like you'll have a whole team of them. My initial guess is that we'll see Barry [head shot], Wally [standing on the right], Bart [with goggles], and the twins [the thinner ones] filling the role of Flash at different times. Who knows though, could be anyone. :)

Given the Flash component of Infinite Crisis #4, I'm inclined to suggest Wally, Barry, Impulse, Johnny Quick and Max Mercury.

Maxwell Lord - RIP - Thank god he is dead.

So Maxie lost his powers twice, and even his human body, but somehow got them all back in time to run a decades-long conspiracy against every superhero on the planet without anyone noticing?

That's a bit out there even for a superhero comic. Or maybe this wasn't the real Maxwell Lord, this was the Anti-Matter Universe evil Maxwell Lord?

If an Anti-Matter Maxie wanted to destroy the earth, all he'd have to do is, you know, touch something.

Like the air.

BOOM.

Max, like everyone else, has been manipulated by Alex Luthor. It should also be pointed out that while 20 years have passed since CoIE for us it's probably only been 3-5 years for those living in the DC universe. So the conspiracy really hasn't been going on quite so long. :)
