Even when ars is

gratia mercatura it's

still semper artis

The palindromedary says "In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni" to prove that lawyers and pompous pedantic poetasters aren't the only ones that can sling Latin around.

Re: Haiku Hero

Up in the crow's nest

The pirate and cabin girl

Make out in moonlight.

Nik Havert of Pickle Press gave me a comic book and a haiku.

I am thinking of going to http://www.picklepress.com and giving him a haiku back, now that I've read the comic.

Unexpected gift

Because my name is Lucius

Reads A What The F___?!?!

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary offers the salient facts the the comic book was titled "Lucius Hears a Wha?" and that Lucius Alexander's reaction upon reading it was "What the f___?"

Re: Haiku Hero

Not really about a character per se, but my favorite haiku nonetheless:

Haikus are easy

But sometimes they don't make sense

Refrigerator

We don't want haiku

About characters - but haiku

That has character.

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary observes

Starkist doesn't want

Tuna with good taste - only

Tuna that tastes good

Re: Haiku Hero

Someone sent Me this set:

cat haiku

You never feed me.

Perhaps I'll sleep on your face.

That will sure show you.

You must scratch me there!

Yes, above my tail!

Behold, elevator butt.

The rule for today:

Touch my tail, I shred your hand.

New rule tomorrow.

In deep sleep hear sound

cat vomit hairball somewhere

will find in morning.

Grace personified.

I leap into the window.

I meant to do that.

Blur of motion, then --

silence, me, a paper bag.

What is so funny?

The mighty hunter

Returns with gifts of plump birds --

your foot just squashed one.

You're always typing.

Well, let's see you ignore my

sitting on your hands.

My small cardboard box.

You cannot see me if I

can just hide my head.

Terrible battle.

I fought for hours. Come and see!

What's a 'term paper?'

Small brave carnivores

Kill pine cones and mosquitoes,

Fear vacuum cleaner

I want to be close

to you. Can I fit my head

inside your armpit?

Wanna go outside.

Oh, poop! Help! I got outside!

Let me back inside!

Oh no! Big One

has been trapped by newspaper!

Cat to the rescue!

Humans are so strange.

Mine lies still in bed, then screams;

My claws are not that sharp.

To which I add:

I like catnip mice

I like to bite their heads off

They're good for breakfast.

Lucius Alexander

How often can I

Put "Palindromedary"

Into a haiku?

Re: Haiku Hero

I can't take credit

For these wonderful haikus.

A friend sent me them. :D

Cat Haikus

The food in my bowl

Is old, and more to the point

Contains no tuna.

So you want to play.

Will I claw at dancing string?

Your ankle's closer.

There's no dignity

In being sick - which is why

I don't tell you where.

Seeking solitude

I am locked in the closet.

For once I need you.

Tiny can, dumped in

Plastic bowl. Presentation,

One star; service: none.

Re: Haiku Hero

Haiku is meant to capture a moment; properly written, it evokes the season in which it is written, the Zen-like 'ah!' of understanding gained in that moment, the connection between man and nature, and (often surprising) the 'lack of intentional thought'. The haiku presented by Lucius on the first page evokes many -- most -- of these things; even, somewhat surprisingly, the season.

What most Americans practice is called 'senryu', a self-conscious and often humorous 'little cousin' to the more elegant haiku. After twenty years of writing haiku, I think I've managed to actually write two that could be considered such.

Doesn't stop me from trying, though.

Roaming across worlds

As I wait for my players

The light is enough

Re:visiting Ancient Haiku Hero

I just stumbled across this....from July 2002!

Hope not to offend;

Please make these poor offerings

Welcome to this list.

One of my favorite websites is the discussion board for Hero Games, and recently they were discussing appropriate limitations for priest characters in fantasy campaigns. Black Rose Kodachi suggested a worshipper of a Goddess of Poetry might have a vow to only speak in poetic quatrains, to which I replied

By the Gods man, have you just gone insane?

Unless you're a genius that's not going to go!

Have you ever TRIED speaking poetic quatrain?

It takes all day to think how to just say hello!

To which Lxndr responded

What would the value

of "only speaks in haiku"

the fish swims freely

And Kodachi added

-laughs- Thanks Lucius, I needed that.

Actually, you've proved that speaking in quatrains is pretty hard, but it could be worse....

....I could have said "only speaks in sonnets."

So I wrote

One who speaks haiku

Already knows its value.

Who else needs to know?

Quatrains with rhyme schemes

Stumble awkwardly, words forced;

Haiku flows freely.

To speak in sonnets;

Move mount Fuji with a spoon.

Helpless, one falls mute.

Mind stuck in haiku;

One day after writing those

I posted some more.

All day I haiku.

A leaf drifts, graceful, helpless.

What have you begun?

Distinctive Features:

Yes, haiku draws funny looks

If people notice.

Let them laugh; Lao Tze

Was right, what is not laughed at

Is not the true Way.

Psychological

Limit? I find it is a

Pleasant Compulsion.

Pleasing to the Gods?

No miracle but haiku.

Miracle enough.

One must count points, else

Pointless the rules, but know that

Points are not the point.

Lucius Alexander

Well mounted I ride

My palindromedary

Even through haiku.

Physics for pre-meds

Mercenary hoop-jumpers

I just want an A

revela, my girl

if only you could see this

I know you'd relate

Lucius Alexander

"Bio for pre-meds"

the palindromedary

says she'd amend it.
