gewing
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs A Boy named sue was made famous by Johnnie Cash, but according to the IMDB, it was written by Shel Silverstein. Shel wrote lots of fun stuff, Cover of the Rolling Stone for Dr Hook, the Unicorn for the Irish Rovers. just to name a couple, and some great childrens books too There is a website with his lyrics. He wrote a "sequel" of sorts to "Boy Named Sue" Lets just say that the Father tells a different story, and that I nearly gagged.

He's the man in the know, who can get you what you want (drugs) for the right price. When he's in town, the nightlife is hopping, when he's not, what's the point of going out? He also seems to be in excellent physical shape, if a bit on the thin side, and although he wears a teaspoon around is neck, he doesn't seem to partake himself, as he's careful about what he eats and apparently works out regularly. Of average height, the Iceman has an athletic build, but isn't overly muscled. He tends to dress in all white and owns a white Caddilac Eldorado. Iceman makes an excellent street-level pusher/supplier of drugs for Dark Champions games. As he's only 66 points, he's pretty much a pushover for DC PC. I suggest giving him Well Connected and adding a series of Contacts (his clients, other drug suppliers, the local mob, and so on), as well as a WF for handguns. Even so, I doubt he'll be more than 100 points or so. He's a big man, described at one point as "a giant with a pair of friendly eyes." He's also a skilled soldier, leading at least one fellow Marine out of an ambush and back to the safety of his lines. Of course, it also happens that he's dead. Bullets pass right through him, unless he decides to swat them out of the air, and he's strong enough to rip up a large tree and use it on the enemy. After rescuing one Marine, he vanished back into the bush, possible to help out others, or to simply take the fight directly to the Viet Cong. Camouflage comes from the Stan Ridgway song of the same name. The song states the bullets passed through him, while stating he "fought all night", mean he could affect the physical world in his ghost state. Naturally, this makes for an expensive character, and his Missile Deflection might need "Affects Physical World" as well, even though Hero Designer wouldn't let me put the Advantage on it. Although built as a Dark Champions character, he's more of a Champions character, what being dead and all. Although you could use him in just about any setting that has a strong dose of the supernatural. He then traveled to Biafra, where he and his Thompson submachine gun slugged it out with the Bantu over who'd control the Congo. While a skilled soldier and the best Thompson gunner of them all, the CIA decided he had to go, and bribed one of Roland's fellow soldiers, a man named Van Owen to kill him. Van Owen did so, blowing Roland's head clean off. Roland, however, wasn't one to let death stop him, and rose back up, head missing, and searched the length and breadth of Africa before finally finding Van Own in a Mombassa bar. After blasting Van Own into bloody bits, Roland continued what he knew best, and wanders the world as a mercenary, selling his skills and gun to anyone who can pay. The CIA, for their part, and still trying to figure out how to put Roland to rest for good. In some ways similar to the character of Camouflage (in that he's an undead soldier), Roland is the hero of Warren Zevon's Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. I built him as a fairly normal, but fit individual, and added in some powers to simulate his undead status (not to mention his willingness to come back from the dead to avenge his own murder). As with Camouflage, Roland is written as a Dark Champions character, but is more suited for supernaturally-influenced Champions games or things like Horror Hero. Interestingly, since he's a Thompson gunner, there's nothing stopping you from using Roland in a Pulp Hero game. You don't even need to change his name! Hmm, didn't Wilton Fisk -- the Kingpin -- have a rival named the Rose who was, unknown to him, his own son Richard Fisk bent on destroying the old man's criminal empire? The singer could almost be Richard -- taking to or about his father not long after he's discovered where his father's money actually came from. Susano
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs The problem is (in my mind) is that unlike, say, Big Jim Walker, the song doesn't give us any solid details, just a lot of suggestions for what the character could do. So I could build a character, but I feel a lot of it would be made up whole cloth or only tenuously linked to the song.

He gets up after sundown, plays his sax, drinks Scotch whiskey, dallies with his female acquaintances, and generally lives his life his own way. Apparently, he turned to this lifestyle after failing at a more conventional forms of making a living, taking the name "Deacon Blues" in response to such nicknames as "Crimson Tide" for "the winners in the world." While seemingly content with his life, Deacon Blues also fully expects it to be the death of his, as he figures one too many nights of drinking will result in his death in a car accident. The "star" of Steely Dan's song Deacon Blues, the otherwise unnamed protagonist of the song could be used in both Dark Champions or Pulp Hero games as a small-time musician, playing jazz, R&B, or even rock clubs. While not a major mover or shaker he does know a little bit about the city's nightlife and might be able to point PCs in the right direction -- depending on what they need. To make Deacon Blues more powerful/useful, give him some additional Knowledge Skills (such as local music scene and the like), and a few Contacts (club owners and other musicians). He gained a reputation as an honest supplier and made quite a deal of cash, feeling himself almost on top of the world and able to do anything. But as time passed and things changed, his former customers began to default on payments and his friends died. Finally, Kid Charlemagne was forced to leave San Francisco when his neighbors began to suspect his activities and the police moved in to arrest him. Need a former drug-supplier (and possible ex-junkie)? Kid Charlemagne is your man. A skilled chemist, he's the sort of low-end street-level contact every Dark Champions vigilante needs to identify new drugs or to press for information about what's happening on the street. To make him more powerful (he has 13 points to spend), up his INT, give him a few more Science skills, and maybe WF: Handguns. Kid Charlemagne can be found in the Steely Dan song, Kid Charlemagne. shadowcat1313
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs how about characters from musicals or operas? Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of fleet street comes to mind Professor Harold Hill from the Music Man Doctor Doolittle, the Rex Harrison version!!! Eddie Murphy was just awful I understand Tim Burton is going to direct a movie version of Sweeney Todd, with Johnny Depp as the barber... CountZero
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs I'm surprised this one hasn't been posted yet. I'm afraid I'm new to Hero System (I literally got Hero Fifth and Dark Champions yesterday), so I'm not sure how you would (if you even should) write up Jimmy's bribes to the local cops. Michael Hopcroft
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs First of all, welcome to the boards. Having a portion of the police force in your pocket could be several different things in terms of writeups. Since Jimmy's connections to the Mexican cartels are the source of much of his influence, I'd make this part of a Perk: Made Man. Or I could simply have Owns the Cops as a Perk in itself, depending on whether the police are simply looking the other way when he acts illegally or will act to protect him against a private investigation or an outside agency such as the FBI or DEA. He could take a Contact within the LAPD who tips him off when threats from outside their influence emerge. The Tijuana and Juarez cartels would be Hunteds for him; although they are in theory only Watching they could turn on him at any moment, leading to much bloodshed, so I would put them at full value. And fourteen hours later I was down in Adelaide Looking through the want ads sipping Fosters in the shade I opened up an agency somewhere down the line To hire aboriginals to work the opal mines But I attached their wages and took a whopping cut And whisked away their workman's comp and pauperized the lot I'm Mr. Bad Example, intruder in the dirt I like to have a good time, and I don't care who gets hurt I'm Mr. Bad Example, take a look at me I'll live to be a hundred and go down in infamy I bought a first class ticket on Malaysian Air And landed in Sri Lanka none the worse for wear I'm thinking of retiring from all my dirty deals I'll see you in the next life, wake me up for meals
BNakagawa
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs Warren Zevon's a veritable goldmine of inspiration for DC NPCs.
