Michael Hopcroft
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs Actually' date=' his "deaf, dumb, and blind" is all psychological.[/quote'] And, when he regains his senses, he trades them in for a completely different set of Psych Lims. He has several Charisma-based abilities (high PRE, high skill levels in oratory and Persuasion) but they are counterbalanced by a Total commitment to Megalomania (his God Complex). Tommy is, above all else, a tragedy, and the character only gets his redemption at the end when he realizes that his experiences in the "Quiet Vibration Land" did not lead him to wisdom at all, and that he was even more blind than when he couldn't allow himself to see at all. Which gives him even more in common with Pink than being the hero of a rock opera. Pink is a man who has been betrayed by authority almost from the day he was born, and even his attempts to build his own identity by rebelling were building on what that authority wanted him to do, leading into territory that gets darker and darker -- culminating into his achieving fame as singer in a Nazi-rock band. Sure, the songs can be used to build such characters, but my intent is to try and build the "exact" character the song is about. Hence the use of song lyrics as the SFX for so many powers and skills. I realize some people may not see the difference, but if I don't "see" a character in the lyrics, I'm not going to [be able to] create something. If you think you can build a character around the song, go right ahead.

JenovasWitness
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs I don't know if this has been suggested or not, but how about Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Take a litle walk to the edge of town Go across the tracks Where the viaduct looms, like a bird of doom As it shifts and cracks Where secrets lie in the border fires, in the humming wires Hey man, you know you're never coming back Past the square, past the bridge, past the mills, past the stacks On a gathering storm comes a tall handsome man In a dusty black coat with a red right hand He'll wrap you in his arms, tell you that you've been a good boy He'll rekindle all the dreams it took you a lifetime to destroy He'll reach deep into the hole, heal your shrinking soul Hey buddy, you know you're never ever coming back He's a god, he's a man, he's a ghost, he's a guru They're whispering his name through this disappearing land But hidden in his coat is a red right hand You ain't got no money? He'll get you some You ain't got no car? He'll get you one You ain't got no self-respect, you feel like an insect Well don't you worry buddy, cause here he comes Through the ghettos and the barrio and the bowery and the slum A shadow is cast wherever he stands Stacks of green paper in his red right hand [Organ solo] You'll see him in your nightmares, you'll see him in your dreams He'll appear out of nowhere but he ain't what he seems You'll see him in your head, on the TV screen And hey buddy, I'm warning you to turn it off He's a ghost, he's a god, he's a man, he's a guru You're one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan Designed and directed by his red right hand [Organ solo] I don't really know if you can work a character out of that or not, but it's still a kick-ass song. However, unlike his predecessors, Pettimore III doesn’t run ‘shine, he grows marijuana, having seeded “The Holler Down Copperhead Road.” The Pettimores apparently have quite a history. John Lee Pettimore I made moonshine out on Copperhead Road (located in Tennessee), and if the stories are true, filled a US Government revenue agent who came to raid the place. John Lee Pettimore II and his brother tore down a “Big Block Dodge” (apparently an ex-county sheriff's car) and made weekly whiskey runs down to Knoxville until he died in a car wreck. John Lee Pettimore III joined the Army when he was 18 and ended up serving two tours in Vietnam. Once he returned, he decided on a new plan -- he’d get seeds from south of the border, plant them, and start growing grass. Oh, and in case you’re thinking of snooping around Copperhead Road, you’d better beware, John Lee Pettimore III fought the North Vietnamese in the jungle and brought more than a few of their tricks and traps back with him. John Lee Pettimore III appears in the Steve Earle song Copperhead Road from the album of the same name. Built using the Military Package Deal from Dark Champions, he’s perfect as a Dark Champions character and servers as a low-level target for PCs just starting out. He can be used in campaigns set in the mid-70s to mid-80s or so, while his father and grandfather can be used in Pulp Hero games. In fact, you could even link Pettimore II to Rapid Roy the Stock Car boy, since the latter character also ran ‘shine (although in his case it was down in Alabama). To make John Lee Pettimore III more powerful, give him a better STR, DEX, CON, SPD, and some Combat Levels with guns. You could also combine him with his father and grandfather, and add in a souped-up car, Combat Driving, Mechanics, and similar skills. Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress was the Hollies most successful American single, reaching number 2 on the charts. The character was built around the Jazz Musician package from Pulp Hero with the addition of “Getta Aload Of Her!”. She could easily fit into either a Dark Champions or Pulp Hero setting with ease. She makes a good Contact for those into the musical scene, and might make a good DNPC for a Masked Avenger-type crimefighter. Gawain
Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs How about Amos Moses by Jerry Reed? Well Amos Moses was a Cajun, He lived by himself in the swamp. He hunted alligators for a livin, He just knocked 'em in the head with a stump. The Louisiana law gonna get ya Amos It ain't legal hunting alligators down in the swamp, boy Well everybody blames his old man, For makin' him mean as a snake, When Amos Moses was a boy His daddy would use him for alligator bait. Tie a rope around his neck, and throw him in the swamp, Alligator bait in a Louisiana bayou About 45 minutes southeast of Thibodeaux, Louisiana Lived a man named Doc Milsap and his pretty wife Hanna hey raised up a son who could eat up his weight in groceries, Named him after a man of the cloth, Called him Amos Moses Well, the folks around south Louisiana Said Amos was a hell of a man He could trap the biggest, the meanest alligator And just use one hand That's all he's got left cause an alligator bit him Left arm gone clean up to the elbow Well the sheriff caught wind that Amos Was in the swamp huntin' alligator skins So he snuck in the swamp, gonna getcha boy, But he never come out again. Well, I wonder where the Louisiana sheriff went to? You can sure get lost in a Louisiana bayou! About 45 minutes southeast of Thibodeaux, Louisiana Lived a man named Doc Milsap and his pretty wife Hanna They raised a son who could eat up his weight in groceries, Named him after a man of the cloth, Called him Amos Moses Or Guitar Man also by Jerry Reed. He wears normal "farmer" clothing, switching to hunting gear when out on a mission. BACKGROUND Edan (Celtic for "flame/firey") Harper was raised in a strict religious home in Bristol, Tennessee. From an early age, Edan was convinced that God had a special purpose for him. After long nights of prayer, Edan heard what he believed to be the voice of God telling him "suffer the little children." As a result, Edan set out to kill those he perceived to be preying on children, such as pedophiles, child pornographers and abortion clinics. The "Soldier of the Lord" bomber has become somewhat notorious in his home state, and the police are considering calling in the Feds, or at least the player characters. PERSONALITY Edan is a fanatic who has twisted his Christian faith to justify killing those he perceives as the enemies of children. He prefers using fire to cleanse the earth of these vile predators, but will resort to more conventional means if necessary. Even in his civilian identity, Edan has a fondness for flame metaphors and a scarily unforgiving psueudo-Christian rhetoric. The neighbors are starting to talk. Edan doesn't have any children of his own, and is unlikely to get any. Despite this, he will go out of his way to protect and help children. QUOTE "Let me be his flamin’ arrow Let me wield his fiery sword I am the angel of his vengeance I am a soldier of the Lord" POWERS/TACTICS Edan is a reasonably fit man with some knowledge of firearms and explosive devices. His preferred modus operandi is to blow up or burn buildings with his intended victims inside, using a pistol or rifle to pick off anyone who escapes immediately. He won't stick around, being smart enough to know that will get him caught. In a personal combat situation, Edan will seek cover and try to snipe opponents. If capture seems inevitable, he will attempt suicide--he believes God will forgive this small sin given his prior services. Edan's normal carried equipment is a pistol; he may have a rifle or shotgun if he's actively hunting someone. His incendiary and explosive devices are designed for use against buildings, and are unsuitable for combat. CAMPAIGN USE Edan is an example of the "well-intentioned fanatic" who believes that the rightness of his cause trumps the illegality or possible immorality of his actions. Anyone who protects Edan's intended victims is clearly deluded or actually just as guilty of harming children. He can be used to bring up social issues, and serve as an example of what vigilantes shouldn't turn into. Edan will Hunt characters who he believes are harming children. Edan doesn't really need to be any weaker; to make him stronger, give him better weaponry, maybe a protective vest, and perhaps some fanaticism-related superskills. (Making him effectively immune to fire would be thematically appropriate.) For larger player character groups, consider giving Edan a group of like-minded fanatic followers. Edan Harper was created by Stuart Adamson for the song "Soldier of the Lord", available from Big Country.
