What Have You Watched Recently?

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

The only other times the show has given me the creeps is when the villain is found in a Faerie Tale Book instead of the usual musty tome.
I guess since I've read some pretty screwed up Faerie Tales in my time, creating a villain from one is par for the course. As I recall, it was done well. Just not surprising. And for the record, as a child I always watched the oven in a strange person's house and made sure that if I had to pass by it, there was nobody within sprinting distance of me. Hansel and Gretel was just that influential on me as a kid. Talking wolves that eat Grandma and try to trick ya? No problems. Kindly seeming, old lady that tricks you into getting into her oven just to have lunch. Yeah. Still gives me the willies.

Started watching a documentary on Hulu called Needle Through Brick. Two things struck me about that show. One' date=' the titular style is retarded and looked to me like it was made up to get on camera. Two, Malaysia is absolutely crawling with ancient Kung-Fu masters disguised as cooks, cobblers, bakers, or whatever. There are more of them than you can shake a bo staff at. Don't invade Malaysia because you are going to be schooled and sent home crying by a bunch of stooped, old men reliving the glory days.[/quote']

To quote from Terry Pratchett, NEVER forget Rule One.

Finished Kolchack Dvds. I prefer the scrabbling, lying cheating impoverished Darren Macgavin to the house on the hill, brand new mustang, intense Stuart Townsend.

The first set comes across as mysteries with a unnatural angle in them. Kolchack acts as a detective.

This makes two of us. I prefer the slightly sleazy Kolchak of the 70's who's mostly out to save his neck.

Best Buy had Psych season 1 and 2 shrinkwrapped together for a price cheaper than either season alone. I picked up the set and have been watching the first couple of seasons over the past few weeks. The cast has great chemistry, even at the beginning, though mid-way through the first season they hit their stride. Basically an hour long episode of two guys cracking wise and solving a crime in the last five minutes.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Over the last week, I watched (amongst other things):

Ancient Aliens

The History Channel provides fodder for padding out your science-fictiony alternative history. My only complaint is the number of "experts" who assume that aliens would have had to have built Stonehenge/the Nazca lines/Maccu-Piccu/[enter ancient engineering marvel of your choice] because stone-age humans were too
stupid
to do it themselves.

Saw this on DVD. Excellent spoof of Star Trek and Babylon 5.

National Geographic brings us the story of middle-stone-aged people who lived on the land exposed by low ocean levels during the ice age, and what happened when the ice started melting.

Darkwing Duck
(the 1-hour (two ½-hours) pilot episode)

That show was a lot more fun than I remembered, and Darkwing wasn't the capitol-J Jerk that I remembered either. Not bad really. Maybe I'll watch more.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

more Buffy, more Angel . . . just watching both series all the way through and making observations after the fact.

Angel made a huge mistake in format - it went the Buffy route of both ensemble cast and having a big bad - even series wide instead of season wide it was a mistake. Angel shouldn't have an external thing to fight. His show should have been a more straightforward approach to redemption; each season should have had a Big Save in terms of saving a soul, putting someone on the right path, or such - interwoven with episode short stories to drive the larger arc.

Wolfram & Hart was - simply put - a huge mistake, it just made it "Buffy, only for guys with the dark brooding stranger" instead of the "cute little blonde" ... and the number of cast members on the constant rise, yeesh. I really think Angel could have just been him and Cordelia with ins and outs of other characters as stories progressed. Oh well. still some good bits and since I've started, might as well finish it all off for the tasty morsels in the mostly ruined batch of cookies.

Dragon Tiger Gate -- This time without the awful English dubbing.

There was also a trailer (with awful English dubbing) of a film called Kung Fu Fighter, featuring many of the people from Kung Fu Hustle. However, IMDB doesn't list it at all....

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Last night I watched The Golden Age of Cartoons: Cartoons for Victory! There were several interesting ones, including a German short that seemed to have nothing to do with the War whatsoever and a Vichy French (collaborationist) one showing Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Popeye, etc., on a bombing mission over France while a derogatory Jewish stereotype broadcasts propaganda to the resistance about how they should stand firm because "we are coming!" Of course, the family listening to the broadcast is destroyed by the bombing mission mentioned earlier. It ends with the Angel of Death arriving to collect the souls of the "poor, deluded French patriots". There were a couple of training films about camouflage, one of them (Private Snafu) was kind of funny, but the other, aptly-titled Camouflage, was produced by Walt Disney studios and features an "old hand at camouflage" (a Chameleon named "Jehudi") instructing airmen in how to use camouflage to conceal their planes, buildings, and roads, while using scrap materials to create camo-netting, dummy planes, etc. There are also a bunch of wartime posters (Allied and Axis) in the Special Features section. Good stuff for a buff like myself.

Bonus: Found a short version of one of the propaganda films @ YouTube:

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

I'm reminded by that of a documentary film that was shown in Portland (though I didn't get out to see it) a couple of weeks ago. It was about the making of Jew Suss, perhaps the vilest piece of Anti-Semitic propaganda ever made by the Nazis, and how the careers of those involved were utterly destroyed when Hitler lost the war. The director was even charged with war crimes, but acquitted.

Here's the Wikipedia entry on the documentary.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Just finished watching through the first 2 seasons of True Blood. As far as Urban Fantasy/ Necroporn goes, pretty good. Lots of good actors giving good character performances, and I haven't hit any major WTF stumbling blocks. I called the nature of the season 2 big bad right off the bat, but then again... I'm a geek. Lafayette is possibly one of my favorite characters I've ever seen on TV... he reminds me of several people I've met. There is a definite "This is a study of the American Redneck, for Good and for Ill" vibe to the overall show that occasionally amuses me.

Oh, and I find myself watching Eric Northman and nodding, thinking "Honestly, that's probably how I'd act if I was a vampire."

Northman -- that's Alexander Skarsgård's character' date=' right? The Viking?[/quote']

Yep, that's the one.

Iron Man 2

Finally saw it last night. Great movie from start to finish.

Saw it last night too, to "celebrate" my GF quitting her job (thus giving us a Saturday night together, woot), and I second you. Nothing in that movie I didn't like.

More Buffy (season5) and Angel (season2) ... further I get into it - and knowing some of what comes down the line much later the less I like anyone in Angel but Cordelia and I'm suddenly angry at Joss. irrational. Also, Spike is more tragic than Angel ever will be and more deserving of, well, everything.

Ip Man 2 (or Yip Man 2). The sequel to Ip Man, showing how Master Ip started his school of Wing Chun in Hong Kong. While not as good (IMO) as the first film, it's still pretty danged impressive and has some excellent action/fight scenes. It also has a very (very) short appearance by an 8-10 year-old Bruce Lee.
