Ah, the Lahti-Saloranti L-39. Best anti-tank rifle ever. 20mm, full-auto capable, 10 or 20 round clip, recoil stabilizer, on the upper end of "man portable". The sort of thing that would be standard issue to SWAT departments everywhere if superhumans really existed.

Okay, today it will let me post, but the look of things has changed a lot.

The L-39 ws pretty awesome.   The Swiss 24mm was REALLY impressive, except it was almost a small towed weapon.

One of my favorites was

It evolved into the CG 84mm weapon that is STILL in use, in fact at least in US forces Increasing use.

Cased telescoped ammo is coming... http://kitup.military.com/2014/06/army-awards-contract-7-62mm-lsat.html

NOw if only they will go to a bullet with improved performance...   I still think a .257-.284 makes more sense.    The problem with a  round matching 7.62x51mm is that even if the CTA allows the ammunition and weapon to be lighter, the recoil will still be too much for good controllability in
full automatic from a rifle/carbine weight weapon.

For some more good information on the current state of the program:  http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2014armaments/2014armaments.html

It indicates the CTA uses less propellant than a conventional cartridge for the same performance, which would reduce recoil a little bit, but...

Now a .6mm to 7mm bullet between 105 and 130 grains...

Absolutely.  I've seen data for 6.5mm Grendel and (especially) 6.8mm SPC that clearly show better range, better performance at range, and better terminal effects at almost any range, than the current 5.56mm standard.  (And that's with a full length barrel for the 5.56mm, not the carbine barrels on the M4s that rob the bullet of all its velocity.)

Why can't all ammo be 6.5x55?

It would be one of the best all around choices possible.   Though the case is pretty large by modern standards.    I love the iirc 1942 spitzer 140 grain bullet, but even the older one was nice.   When I got a look at it, I saw why it had not been replaced (edit: Earlier) by a modern spitzer.  It was basically a semi-spitzer, not a round nose like, say, the 6.5 Mannlicher or 6.5 Carcano...

A 6.5mm projectile seems like the sweet spot for ballistics performance right now.  But the benefits of cased telescoped ammunition are striking, and I'm not sure what changes need to be made to the actual projectile for such a load to work.  For example, can you put a boattail bullet in a cased telescoped round and expect it to work?
