Enforcer84 Posted June 11, 2012 Report Share Posted June 11, 2012 This is a comic-book, superheroine version of the Norse Goddess Idunn, Goddess of Youth, Apples, Fertility...and stuffs. She's going to be a sorceress...in the tradition of Marvel's Enchantress, Loreli, or Carnilla - but less selfish and more helpful. So what might such a goddess have amongst her powers? Immortality Transformation attacks that affect Aging/Beauty/Fertility I can see - but Freya is a Fertility Goddess and I don't want Idunn stepping on her toes too much. From what I remember of the Norse myths that I've read, Idunn was goddess of youth due to the fact that she was the keeper of the golden apples of youth, which the Aesir had to eat every so often in order to retain their immortality and youth. I'm not sure if a specific time interval between apples was ever mentioned, but at a minumum it'd probably be one apple every century or so. Since she is a Nordic diety, above average characteristics would be appropriate. As a fertility goddess, some appropriate emotion controlling powers would be appropriate. For the youth thing, being a little vigorous and appropriate Aids and Healing powers. For the apple thing, a heightened Presence for scaring medical personnel a day? "An apple a day..." When Idunn was abducted by a Jotun, the Aesir only realized She was gone when they started to age - suggesting that the effect was immediate or nearly so, because Her husband Bragi, a God of eloquence and poetry, would have missed Her very shortly if no one else did. Also, the Jotun was concerned to catch Her only when She had the ashwood box in which the apples were kept, bringing me to another interesting point, that She was the possessor of a box, not the tender of a tree or orchard. Also suggestive is the hint that She is a sister of, or kin to, the wonderous Dwarven smiths who created Odin's spear and the ship Skidbladnir, which could hold all the Aesir but when not needed could fold up to pocket size. Perhaps Her Eski, or ash-box, contains an unlimited supply of rejuvinating apples, or perhaps the apples only became the Apples of Youth by virtue of being kept in the Eski. It may be that the youth granted by the apples is maintained by the near presence of the Goddess, or the box, or the apples. Since She seems indispensible I posit either only She can open the box (raising the question what else might be in there) or if anyone else opened it they would not find the Apples of Youth - possibly ordinary apples or possibly nothing but whatever they might have put in it. We just played a scenario in our Octagon campaign, in which one of the PC was killed and woke up in the Jotunheim. Other PCs had to find her in the Asgard land of Legend and met the asgardian Gods. During the scenario, Loki manipulated one of the PCs to be freed from his punishment (he was tied up with the guts of his son, yuck..) and the Golden Apples of Idunn were stolen.... Without the apples, the gods wouldn't be able to keep their youth and immortality and started to fall into a kind of torpor. The PCs had to investigate and fights the ice giants and Loki himself to get back the apples. it was kinda epic ! To me Idunn should be able to manipulate life and grow plants (plant MP) She's kinda one of the only Gods that Loki wouldn't kill or harm because without her, the Golden Apples wouldn't grow anymore. Beside that , Immortality, Various Aid for Healing and Ressurection, and the Transform power for the eternal youth seems perfectly fitting. Always young Opale. She propably can keep tons of apples in her box (wich might also mean she has LS: No need to eat with really a lot of UOO). Her name literally means "ever young", "rejuvenator", or "the rejuvenating one". So LS. vs Age, maybe usable on others/with foci and charges. One of the surviving stories has Loki accusing her of having slept with the killer of her brother (but neither killer nor brother are mentioned anywhere) A little less extreme might be an exceptional ability for compassion. So strong, she is willing to forgive even someone who did such bad. Or perhaps a really bad brother. In the poem she says twice: to "not say words of blame to Loki", even after the accusation above. Seems to be another part to a wise/forgiving personality. She was once turned into a nut, to easier rescue he in falcon form. Maybe an Alternate form: Nut? Everyone keeps mentioning Idunn's apples, so since this is for a superheroic character, why not get more literal with them? How about a Blast from hurled apples (maybe they return to her like Thor's hammer)? Perhaps her apples can float in the air around her, Deflecting attacks? Plants bloom and bear fruit, animals go into estrus/have heavier than normal but healthy litters, minor illnesses clear up, people get a bit "friskier" and energetic (spring fever), etc. Not to the level of mind control or transform but a noticeable effect when Idunn is in the area. The "poison apple" of Snow White. Apple of charm. Apples turn up often enough as persuasive gifts, such as in courtship. Apple of desire, or apple of distraction. Examples include the story of Atalanta, who was finally beaten in a footrace only because her suitor kept dropping apples she found so irresistable she had to stop for them, and the famous apple Eris threw among the Goddesses that was labeled "for the fairest" that drew even the wise Athena into a ridiculous competition to possess it. When Idunn was turned into a nut, that was Loki's doing. But I can't help noting that She spent time as a nut, and is best known for possessing a wooden box, and there's a certain oneiromythical connection between the concepts of nut and of box...also, the box was presumably somehow subsumed into the nut She became and is perhaps best thought of as part of Her. Some skill with woodworking or more general craft skills may be called for. She is, after all, described as a child of the same Sire whose sons created Skidbladdnir and Grungnir.
