Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phase Three and BEYOOOOONND

If networks and studios can continue to tell stories that audiences can relate to, they will. I think superheroes offer considerably more opportunities to do that as the years and decades pass. Superheroes inhabit the realm of sci-fi, which always remains relevant to, and in sync with, contemporary culture. Westerns are, by nature, stuck in a single era and are, even now, strictly period pieces.

Except for Westworld.  :)

I kind of feel it is a stretch to call those Westerns, despite their superficial Western appearance. Firefly is perhaps the closest to being a Western in science fiction clothing, rather than the other way around.

Cowboys Versus Aliens is the unquestionable one.  It's set in the latter half of the 19th century in a mythic version of the American west with cowboys and gunslingers.  That makes it a western because westerns are defined by that specific setting.  Firefly on the other hand is far future spacemen who kind of pretend to be cowboys.

Plus Cowboys & Aliens actually looked at previous westerns to get that bona fide western feel.

Steven Spielberg screened The Searchers (1956) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) for Roberto Orci and Jon Favreau so that they could get the atmosphere of the film.

Director Jon Favreau was constantly harassed with demands to shoot/convert the film in 3-D, but he held his ground, claiming Westerns should only be shot on film.

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 2:

If Stitch were ever to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy he'd probably look something like this (and no that's not gonna happen - but cool art, huh?) by Boris Kiselicki.

Maybe this Iron Fist will be all about technique and not brawn.

In any case, I remain open-minded. I was not optimistic when I heard the news of the casting of Krysten Ritter for Jessica Jones but I got used to her portrayal after a while. Given the overall quality of the Netflix Marvel shows, I expect to be pleased with the end result in spite of any early skepticism.
