World Creation Superdraft 4: May 2020

Thus spake Kylvn:

Inscissivus hath cloven silence: Sounds

Were thus created, from the scuttled step

Of Shayol’s cockroach to the dragon’s roar,

Volcanis’ thunder, clink of Nogrom’s coins,

The final gasp of love or death, the snore

Of sleeping dreamers, Fox’s yipping laugh!

Infinity of sounds! Though in between

My silence still shall reign, I, Kylvn, claim

A certain class of sounds to be mine own:

Sounds given order to be more than sound.

Let rhyme and meter temper speech to verse,

And ratio harmonize the twanging string

Or pulsing tube of air; let overtones

Give sweetness unto sounds, and rhythm tune

The cymbal’s crash, the tabor’s tap, and so

Compel the feet to dance! A unity

Of movement wrought without the threat of force:

An order taken for its own sweet sake!

Let this be Kylvn’s gift to mortal kinds,

And even to his fellow gods, for they

Shall hear the pleas and praises unto them

Ascend in music, holy verse, and song.

Tl;dr: Kylvn’s gift to civilization is ordered sound, encompassing poetry, music and dance, as no clear line can be drawn between them.

It has long been suspected that the gods enjoy playing games. Mortals fear they are but playthings before the gods temperamental whims. It is true that they love to partake in games of skill so complex that no mortal mind can even comprehend them. Or so they think. Eternus has challenged this notion and set t prove they are more capable than previously thought. To that end he has chosen his favorite game to bestow upon the mortals below in which secrets are revealed. By extension he has become known as a patron deity for games of skill and worthy competition.

Gift to Civilization: Chess, and games of skill.

Deep within the stone that supported the worlds, Inscissivus found a gemlike mineral that appealed to Him.  It refracted light with clarity and brilliance, yet possessed unmatched hardness and edges so keen that an elf cut by it would bleed to death before noticing the wound.

Inscissivius struck these minerals with his blade, setting them to ring with vibration forever.  He named it Sevittrium, for its edges would ever cut anything they touched, even the roots of the living rock.  And He knew the people of the worlds would fashion weapons from it, and He was pleased.

My SECONDARY DOMAIN: Afterlives and Rebirth (Reincarnation)

My GEOGRAPHY: The River Lethe

Dream is the afterlife, which is why the deceased are so often met with in dreams. The River Lethe lies in Dream and marks the border beyond which mortal dreamers may not go. Those who cross Lethe, or drink from its water, forget their former lives and identities, washed clean for the next lifetime.

My GUARDIAN: Nightmare

The mysterious entity known as Nightmare usually appears as a great black horse. If it has come for you, you will have no choice but to mount it and be carried away. Usually it comes in Dream, but not always - it has been known to appear in the flesh.

Nogrom recognizes and proclaims Their devoted sentient race, after finding a suitable concept.

(OOC: I continue my trend of choosing a race from a new phylum.)

The race calls itself the W'Brrm, and they are distinguished by being nearly indestructible.  Amphibious, they cannot drown, yet they can withstand desiccation.  Born of cool temperate climes, they can survive being frozen, but even (brief) immersion in boiling water does not kill them.  Though they have fearsome claws on their six legs, these are for gripping on precarious surfaces, not for combat (though they can be used for that when pressed).  They can withstand crushing pressures, their integument is remarkably robust and proof from the thrusts of most material weapons, and they can survive falls from heights many times their own size (see a legendary reference to this below).  Their first preference is to consume plant matter (though in need they can eat meat), and seem to take delight in the green slime in backwaters that other sophonts find too disgusting to endure, let alone digest.

Eyeless and blind to light, they sense their surroundings by vibration and sound, and they seem to have some innate navigation sense so they always know what directions are radial (towards the center of the Helix) and antiradial (towards the outer rim), as well as up-Helix and down-Helix.  Their faces are dominated by a short proboscis ending in a ring of nubby tendrils around the oral opening, and when they eat a rasp-surfaced, prehensile tongue extends a short distance to their food. Their speech is buzzy and generally low-pitched, but quite understandable.  Other sophonts find the W'Brrm to be generally slow-moving but of incredible strength and endurance, and slow-speaking but what they say is thoughtful and gently expressed, and perhaps more than a little absent-minded.  On the small side for intelligent races, a typical W'Brrm is slightly more than a meter long from tip of snout to apex of rump, and the top of their shoulders is about 60 cm off the surface they stand on.  A party including a W'Brrm has no need of a pack animal, unless the party is carrying something so bulky it cannot be reliably secured to one individual, or the party must travel at great speed such that the W'Brrm cannot keep up.

They are few in number, and do not breed rapidly.  Their settlements are small villages composed of loose stones stuck together with a cement they brew from the plants they eat.  Though many seem to be in wandering grazing bands, moving from swamp to lake to estuary to shallow seafloor, they can be found anywhere.  Solitary individuals may be found in quite implausible places, and an oft-told story tells of one wanderer who somehow found herself on the underside of the Helix after a lengthy curiosity-driven excursion, and returned to ground by the simple expedient of letting go and dropping to the normal surface of the Helix below.

The W'Brrm understand the concept of money very well -- as Nogrom's chosen race, how could they not? -- but do not hoard it, and their innate sense of money and superior mental calculating powers are such that those W'Brrm found in large settlements of other races are welcomed as moneychangers, since they can judge instantly and fairly the relative values in their current location of different currencies from other nearby places.  (Hand them a paper-money note from the next Turn of the Helix, though, and there is not enough economic context for them to judge values effectively.) They are no more (or less) poetical than most other races, and they are known to hum to themselves when not engaged socially.

The W'Brrm ... are oversized tardigrades.

Finally, a meta-game request ... could there be a post made with everyone's collective picks made so far?

Funnily enough I was thinking about that.

Shayol lay on a branch at the top of the Integral Tree and brooded. It was not enough to simply oppose Tasha or react to Fox, Evil needed to go against all of the gods. Otherwise it would seem he was obsessed with one or the other gods instead of all of them. It still rankled that Kylvn had dismissed both he and Tasha when he brought Winter. Malice came to see him and reported in and although he listened and replied his mind was elsewhere.

He watched a dragon eat some of Layohs and other Loyahs overpower and kill a dragon. He saw Malice spreading dissension and still he brooded. There had to be something that Shayol could do against all the Gods and their creations to thwart their natures. Shayol sat bolt upright and smiled. That was it ! Use the natures of the gods against them ! Shayol climbed down and spread his influence via the tree, he breathed into the air and he put his hand into the rivers.

Satisfied he returned to the tree and settled in the lower branches. Malice soon found him.

‘I know what you have done and why but how does it work ?’ she asked.

Shayol grinned. ‘Consider Fox. There are those of his who will play a trick. But that will not be enough. They will need to play more and more tricks and they will never be satisfied. Those of Andrea will only want to dream and do nothing else. Those of Kylvn will seek the cold or an absence of warmth. Those of Inscissivus will cut and cut and cut.’

Malice frowned, ‘But how does that affect Inscissivus’s followers ? So they cut things. What use is that ?’

Shayol smirked. ‘They cut themselves’

Malice suddenly realised what he meant and then paused again in reflection. ‘Surely Nogram and Tasha are unaffected and what of the others ?’

Shayol nodded in acknowledgement ‘Tashs’s followers will believe that they are good and that nothing else can be. That way they can do evil’

Malice gave a slight bow of appreciation.

‘As for Nogram his followers will despise those that do not prosper or worship him and that circumvents the Gold Sickness. Eternus’s followers will love death so much that they will do anything to stave it off or share it with as many others as they can, The followers of Liminus will feel that there are no boundaries and can therefore do anything. The Fair Star’s children may believe that they are the only true children of their god and seek to destroy the others. As for Volcanis either his followers will seek to destroy anything that goes against nature or they will rebel against it’

Malice paused a moment and then said ‘But what the Loyahs be affected as well ?’

‘Yes and it will be a salutary lesson that there can be too much of a bad thing. Not everyone will be affected but anyone can be’

Malice looked down. ‘Visitors’

Shayol followed her gaze. Tasha had arrived and was looking magnificent but also angry. Volcanis was just behind her. Probably wants to make sure we don’t damage the tree. Won’t this be fun he thought and dropped down to greet them.
