Several of the 4e characters I created in Creatures of the Night: Horror Enemies were revised for later editions of Champions, ultimately making it to the Champions Villains trilogy. Most of them, however, did not. Tiger has expressed interest in updating selected characters for his Forgotten Enemies series (and used Lady Twilight with my blessing), but -- since I am still here -- I might like to do this myself. I've noodled around with Creatures of the Night Resurrected for the last several months, writing up 5e/CC versions of several characters. Before I go further, though, I have some important questions:

Does anybody want this? Did you ever use them, back in the day? Would you use them if they were revised?

Subsequent posts will discuss ways I plan to revise characters, but if they were never that useful in the first place I probably won't bother.

In 2016, I was lead writer for Aaron Allston’s Strike Force. It is one of the highlights of my game writer career. I had hoped to be able to continue work in Aaron's world by developing something I wanted to call "Strike Force Organizations." And now, I can.

Note: This product will be dedicated to Aaron (of course), but also Darren Watts, as when I first discussed this, he wanted to develop the section on the Circle.

The best thing to do is read a lot of pulp and golden age comic stories, so you get a feel for the time period, the culture, the language, the setting, etc.  Stuff like telephones being relatively new, and smoking being more common.  The Golden Age Champions book has a lot of tips and information along these lines as well.  There are certain repeated themes in golden age comics, but mostly the setting and time period is a very important part of the game.  if you just go in thinking modern behaviors and ideals, then its not going to feel like a Golden Age campaign.

Beast reacted to Jason S.Walters in Community Content Program: Hall of Champions
Hero Games will be launching a fan-driven community content program on DriveThruRPG in about a month, similar to Dungeon Masters Guild and Storytellers Vault. It’s going to be called Hall of Champions, and it will allow you to publish your own work on DriveThru for profit under the banner of being a Hero Games product. (Though solely for commercial purposes on DriveThruRPG.) You’ll be allowed to publish using any version of the Hero System you like from 1st to 6th, including Champions Now. You will also be allowed to use both intellectual property that belongs to Hero Games, as well as the Champions Universe, which belongs to Cryptic Studios. The program will supply artwork and templates to work from to make the entire process as easy as possible.

To being with, what I’m looking for are some initial fan contributions from you guys so that we have a certain number of products ready to go at launch. I’ve already received commitments from two of our third party publishers, but could use a bunch more from fans. There are (of course) significant rules governing the community content program, which I will share with you should you contact me. If you have work you would like to contribute, it needs only be in PDF form and have a JPEG cover image available. (This can simply be a copy of the front page.)

Thank you as always for playing the Hero System, and I look forward to hearing from you.

The group plays Champions but also other genres using the Hero System.  We are looking for strong roleplayers more than rules lawyers or system engineers. We play on Monday nights at 630 PST and have played together for a few years, use Discord for voice and for group chats and Roll 20 for maps and such. No experience necessary but please be a fan of comic books. We play Champions and Fantasy Hero so far, and while I am the GM and facilitator it is "our" game, not mine.

I don't think many characters can see the bullet coming towards them either. If they know they are being attacked, why would their DCV be impaired?

An Invisible attack through a focus is likely a sniper's weapon - the user attempts to find a concealed location so that the precise location from which the target is being attacked is difficult to determine.

No, I don't believe it does. Essentially it describes how the book involves selecting multiple modules—around half a dozen for a 400 point character—and equipment bundles, then goes into some examples. At a brief glance I can't see a mention of random characters.

So the description is a bit sparse for Heroes in a Hurry, and I'm wondering a few things...
Is it basically templates for powers, skills, etc.? Is there anything there for the veteran player? What types of heroes can be made using it? Are there specific power types?

As stated above by CRT, you do actually change shape. The wording of Shape Shift is terrible, and I understand your incredulity there though. It's overly descriptive without any clarity. In the case given by the OP, you'd use the touch and Smell/Taste Groups but only change the soles of your feet and maybe the length of your legs.

It's expensive because if you do buy it with all the bells and whistles then its noncombat utility is extremely good.

Cellular and Imitation means only Telepathy (if you have reasonable suspicion) and/or Danger Sense give you any chance to catch the Shapeshifter right off. The pricing is similar to Desolidification and it has similar game utility. It won't make you a combat monster, but you can do so many things with it.

I was kinda thinking the same, but there's examples where that doesn't work.  For example...CE to lay down a thin layer of black ice.  Penalty to DEX...but wouldn't this also apply to Acrobatics?  If applied to a wall, it might be best expressed as a penalty to Climbing, as that's the obvious roll...but also perhaps a penalty to try to Cling to the wall?  These aren't a dime a dozen, but if we start with a specific effect and situation, then we can likely construct more than one roll that would be impacted.

And thinking about this some more...

In general, a Characteristic roll is an instantaneous type of check;  spending time doesn't matter.  With many skill checks, you CAN spend time.  This was something that I thought of, in connection with the Lockpicking.  -6 is a major penalty...but some of that can be offset.  Oh, and skill checks can sometimes involve tools that provide +1 or +2.  Characteristic rolls generally can't.  Last, specifically for tracking and sometimes other things...there won't be one check.  This is a case where the GM should require multiple checks, particularly when the track is actively trying to be obscured.

    Next:
Single sense is 2 points per;  sense group is 3.
Single skill is like single sense, whereas Characteristic is analogous to sense group.
So single skill makes sense to be 2 points per.

Now, the GM can make the call...does it apply to a skill, or is it broader, like coating the vertical wall with ice?

    I think we're overthinking this.  A lot.

Here's another, simpler thought, to go about this in a different way.  Let's consider this as an opposed skill contest.  The tracker obviously uses Tracking;  the pursued party could arguably use Stealth or Tracking.  So the item/spell gives a bonus to him...and then you can resolve it as a straightforward skill vs. skill contest.  HOW this is gonna work becomes SFX.

Shapeshift works just flat out, you don't have to make a perfect copy of something that requires a disguise unless you are trying to fool the trackers into thinking you are a known specific other thing.  In other words, you can just use shapeshift if you want them to think you are a cow rather than a human, but you need disguise or its equivalent to make them think you are Flossie, the mayor's favorite show-winning cow.

    And its pretty cheap:
Cow Feet: Shapeshift vs touch and sight/smell (7 active points); Only to leave different tracks (-1)
    Real Cost 3

and that doesn't even include any other modifiers like gestures, etc.

Well, I'm always going to suggest Champions for the game play, and you can scavenge scenarios and characters from Marvel Superheroes (MSH) and DC has a couple games out.  I'd look at the older Mayfair games DC Heroes for DC, although they have a newer game out called the DC Universe Role Paying Game which is about as generic a name as you can get, but it probably has some stuff you could use.  Marvel Multiverse RPG just came out, I don't know much about it other than they worked really, really hard for their stats to spell "Marvel" and I am not sure how much support it has yet.

The time when DC and Marvel are owned by the same company comes closer every year.  Neither is making much if any money off comic books now, and DC/Warner is struggling to put out content people want to see despite having great properties.  I can easily see someone gobbling up both in the future, so probably then.

The thing is, all you need are the characters, and you can make those yourself.  The settings are pretty easy to use and you can grab adventures from either game to blend and use for any characters yourself.
