  1. Re: Concentrate (throughout) I find myself only applying Concentration to things that take forever to do, anyway, such as making a potion in a Fantasy game. I usually give that concentration, under the basis that the lab conditions are fragile, and any major disruption such as combat would ruin the potion. For more active uses of Concentration Throughout... I guess the Invisible Woman's force walls? Maybe some sort of large-scale Succor from a mage?
  2. Re: Bases and Places I tend to prefer flying-island/flying-fortress type bases, or outposts in some funky pocket dimension (possibly mounted on some floating rock in said dimension )
  3. Re: Vehicle combat and regular weapons? I agree with Zeropoint's post for the most part. Depending on how you imagine a superhero's attacks, though, some of those 16d6 EB's can cause a lot of collateral without "Beam." I think that for vehicles above a certain size category, you could probably be safe in limiting things that aren't at least AOE 1 Hex from damaging it. This is especially true in a heroic-level game like most Fantasy HERO games are. For supers, though, I might be willing as the GM to make the provision that if the character is targeting the vehicle specifically, then he might put a little more "umph" into it. Sort of like how in Champions, a typical house becomes unstable to the point of non-saftey once it's sustained 30 BODY. You have to be logical for this case, and assume that that 30 BODY came from superheroic or otherwise explosive/demolition class attacks, and not some dude shooting 30 or 40 bullets through the bedroom wall.
  4. Re: Running a riot? Count random fleeing rioters as an enivronmental condition that provides cover and possibly deters movement. Count the rioters who are flipping cars and looting as "swarms." A big unit of individuals who count as one character for whoopin' purposes. Character presence attacks are next to useless; once people enter "riot mode," they're a bit beyond things that aren't physically painful.
  5. Re: The Uber-Blast Alternatively, the Uber Blast could have Side Effects (Major, DRAIN to practically everything). Possibly with "reduced recovery time" on the Drain, if your GM is cool with it. That way, if it doesn't kill your reserve with END cost, it'll kill it with Drain.
  6. Re: Duplication character...sort of Repped
  7. Re: Why are there no Fantasy Hero adventures / Modules I'm known to do this. I like to make a deck of index cards that have a vague plot hook, which may or may not have a specific locale or adversary, so whenever the action gets thin, or the PCs need extra revenue and decide to do mercenary work, I can just whip out an index card o' conflict.
  8. Re: house rule for c.s.l. Agreed. And in response to posts above about how it's easy to buy a zillion CSL's and become unbalanced... that's what the GM audit is for. I think it's best for the GM, when character creation occurs, to take a look at the characters in relation to any NPCs and/or monster-type things that he's made, and compare maxium CV between them. If they're all in the same general range, depending on the intended power levels of the NPCs, then go with it. Otherwise, suggest some other ways to sink those 8 points.
  9. I'm thinking of of making a magic system for a sort of sci-fi/fantasy game (Think ridiculously epic magiotechnology), in which pretty much everybody can use at least simple magic. Mechanics-wise, you'll purchase a talent based on the highest number of active points any given one of your spells can have, and then each spell will be a 2+1 Background Skill that is complimentary to the Magic Power roll you have to make when you cast. Spells are powered by an environmental END reserve that powers all casters in the region. Background-wise: Magical energy is referred to as "The Music of the Spheres." It is measured in units of "Beats." It generally permeates all reality. Spells cast using the Music are incredibly flashy and disruptive; there is no way to hide the fact that you're casting something. A sequence of celestial notes will play out from the air as great magic circles and orbs of light explode into being around the caster, and then spell effects occur. This is partly for the pleasure of the GM, as I enjoy ludicrously over-dramatic magic. This is also to encourage players to buy some innate abilities due to birthright, self-modification, or super origin. All spells are very flashy and obvious. A flight spell invariably causes you to sprout wings, or creates a big, glowy spirit that drags you around through the air; a fireball spell draws a massive gout of flame from the earth at your feet and hurls it through the air; a Drain BODY might surround your form with some dread entity in a clock, which slashes at the target with a scythe; Summoning things usually causes massive property damage. The Music is fairly abundant, probably a given square mile has its own sizeable energy pool, though it's really in the territory of importance in storyline. In cities, one can usually find a "Beat Barometer," as it were, to tell them how much stress the Music is currently under. If at any given time the Music in a region is completely exhausted, a vacuum forms. In this case, all individuals either trying to cast during that period, or who are maintaining continuous spells, including some forms of magiotechnology, suffer a DRAIN to END, and their spell shuts off. This effect continues until the Music can take a recovery. I'm thinking maybe this effect might act as a Transfer END to the Music, as well. The Music is fairly easily disrupted. It's possible to cast an Antimagic spell that basically cancels out the Music in a given area (Supress Magic, Area Effect, usually uncontrolled). This is common for security purposes in military installations, and occurs naturally in some parts of the world. What do you think so far?
  10. Re: Can't Draw must find help! I reccomend learning to use vectors. Properly implimented, if you have an eye for art, you can create some pretty nice stuff using vector art even if you have no hand for art. Vectors are found in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator(especially Illustrator), Macromedia Flash, and Gnu GIMP, among other softwares.
  11. Re: Sci-fi swear words? From Transformers: Slag, being the general expletive taking the place of the S-word. "Aw, SLAG"/"What a slag-head."
  12. Re: Blowing up a mountain In the Bestiary, there's a planetary destruction beam defined as a Megascaled 10d6 RKA. So, 9 or 10d6 Killing Damage, or 30-40d6 Normal Damage, Megascaled to like 1km ought to do it. Possibly less if you're just looking to break the mountain, rather than shatter it outright. You could up the damage even more if you want to reduce it completely to dust. I ran DBZ Fuzion for a while (boo, hiss), and if you trust your players enough to keep their characters balanced, there's some things you might want to toolkit into the system from that- Powering Up: Ki END is seperate from physical END, and is in a sort of canal-lock setup. Let's say you have a power level of 5000. Until you power up, you have access to none of that. So, let's say you power up for a phase, and you gather 100 Ki. Now you can use 100 ki, and have 4900 left beyond that. For greater strategizing justice, I reccomend doing one or both of these: Make "powering up" act like a Transfer, from self to self, so that ki gathered in that way has a fade rate. However, the main source pool recovers at a normal rate (about 100% every 24 hours, assuming character is in good health); have all gathered ki disperse if that character is CON Stunned and/or knocked out. Here's the trusting your players part: The book-keeping is a lot easier if you don't charge points for powers. At the DBZ level of power, you're gonna be pretty uber no matter what, so what matters is that experience points go into increasing one's power level/source pool, power-up rate, transformations, and Power Skill (assuming a lot of attacks require a skill roll, this is really a design choice on your part). Transformations: This is the only power type that I would charge points for. I define a transformation as an uber power that makes you more uberly powerful. Things to consider: Super Saiyajin is probably a lot of boosted stats with OIHID and GM's permission for acquisition. Kaioken is a multiple-power AID with a damage-causing Side Effect. Actually, I would define most transformations as AID, with slow return rates, unless the character changes in extreme ways, like Buu, and... Buu. Freezer and Cell were still basically Freezer and Cell after switching forms- they were just huger(er). For those multi-stage transforms, use seperate AID powers, all with OIHID(a specific stage form). Man, I strayed from the topic like crazy there.
  13. Re: Shrinking as an attack power? EDM: To the "now you're tiny" dimension, UAA.
  14. Re: Aid...still broken? I think it would create a "buffer" of END, that would be spent before his base END, though, right? It works out to be a similar effect. Anyway, I wouldn't allow a 315 point power in Player Character.
  15. Re: Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: Simulating Stands I like the idea of doing it with duplication. I had originally considered it with a Summon, but I had forgotten that the damage is reflected. Duplication, Damage is Shared/Feedback(-1). Make them Desolid, Always On, affected by SFX "Stand." Alternatively, you could just build the Stand as power framework for the character, a Multipower or an Elemental Control would do the trick, with SFX "Comes from Stand."
  16. Re: Walking/Running on Water: Flight, Gliding, Swimming, Running Usable As...? I think I like Usable as Swimming the best, since that's what the rule is for, but I think that the Surface Only limitation should be applied to the +1/4 points of Usable As, since it otherwise ends up being a limitation on running, which is silly.
  17. Re: Full Metal Alchemist I was under the impression that you're able to transmute gold, but the law prohibits it. Anyway, alchemists should probably be built on either a VPP or an Elemental Control, depending on whether you're going for something like the Alrich brothers (VPP), or most of the other, more specialized State Alchemists (Elmental Control). Most Alchemy seems to require gestures, and you need to have the circle someplace. I would go as far as to make the circle the Focus, and the ingredients "Restrainable." This is probably safe to go with, since Edward was unique, and a Philosopher's Stone is still a Focus.
  18. Re: spell for focus I think that the character in this situation should only receive points for OIF if the object is breakable, for balance purposes.
  19. Re: Power help: Hyper-Dexterity? Don't forget Acrobatics and Contortion, possibly even super-Contortion(desolid, RSR: Contortion).
  20. Re: Post your most abusive munchkin character here I can think of one good one: Captain "Screw This." His only power is: Screw This. RKA 10d6, Armor Piercing (+1/2), Megascale(Planetary AOE, +1.25), Area Effect 1 Hex (+1/2). 487 Active Points. No Range (-1/2), 1 Charge Ever (-4). Incantations ("Screw This. I'm going home." -1/4). Extra Time (Extra Segment -1/2). 78 Real Points. Citing the Bestiary for damage value, this would blow up the planet in one shot. On a similar note, I once ran a campaign in which the PCs were piloting humanoid mecha in space, Gundam-style. As part of the template, each one had a built-in thermonuclear device for use in emergency. Well, half-way through the first battle, one of the players ran out of missiles and was rolling poorly with his energy sabre, so he pressed the big red button. Keep in mind, the PCs were still flying in formation at this time. There were no surviving players, and earth was over-run by invaders. That marked the last time that I ever supplied characters with a free self-destruct switch.
  21. Re: Building robots Here is my big question: Will the player ever get to use the robot on a regular basis, like a Summon, or a Follower? If the answer is "No, the robot will be used exclusively by the military and the player will just get a medal for it," then under no circumstances should the player be forced to pay points for the robot. If the answer is, "Yes, he gets to keep the prototype to be his friend," then by all means, make him expend his own resources. Keep in mind what Dust Raven said, though- basing monetary cost on character points will only lead to annoyance.
  22. Re: About Naked Advantages... I find that Naked Advantages are best bought for a specific use, like Duke Bushido said. Generally, I use them as an option for things in a multipower, or as part of a Partially Limited Power construct. As for the dragon-slaying arrow... well, the thing slays dragons. I'd keep it as-is, personally, but if you wanted to be able to do extended range with any arrow, I'd say ask the GM what the high-end of active points would be for magic arrows when you first make the character, and hold him to it.
