It would let your character tell the distinction between different stainless steels for example. So if Joe Blow walks out and he sees a bunch of stainless steel he won't be able to tell the difference between 400 series 300 series 200 series Molly percentages. But somebody with discriminatory added to site would be able to make all of those analysis. At least that's how I see it

It is with great sadness that I announce my good friend, David Stevens, aka Hyper-man passed away last week. He fought a courageous battle against brain cancer.   He was a Huge fan of the Hero System, and has a very impressive collection of products he was very proud of.

One of the last things we talked about was his collection, and his wishes for it.   It is literally only a couple of books short of having Every product printed for the Hero system, including Kickstarters.  He really wanted to try to keep the collection together.

    I'm interested in everyone's opinions,
Do you think anyone would be interested in purchasing such a large collection?
I could bring it to Gencon and try there, but am not willing to let it go for pennies on the dollar.
Would EBAY be the best way to try to sell?

Any other unique ideas on what to do with the collection?  (Doesn't have to be sold)

    Thanks !

They way to go with that is to tell the player if he takes the limitation then there will be things in game that take it away.
In this example the symbiote can get sick and the power stops working or is reduced.  The symbiote can also be required at times to leave the body to perform other tasks meaning the player won't have it.  Enemies who become knowledgeable can do this.

Even if he buys it IIF -1/4L it is possible for a bioengineer to create a chemical or biological agent that deadens the creature turning off the focus until the player can heal it.  How much the GM should have this interfere with the character should depend on how much of a limitation they took.

Ndreare reacted to iena in Doubt about the magic system
    Dears,
I’m looking for some support because I’m going to start a really titanic did (at least to me): I’m going to create starting from zero a complete fantasy setting using the 6th edition of Hero System… Furthermore, I have to involve my current RPG party that don’t speak English at all and explain all the rules…
Anyway, my main doubt is about the magic system. I know that “Fantasy Hero” handbook proposes a lot of different magic systems but you have to understand that I don’t have time to test the system…Once I have implemented it, I must to be sure that it works and, most important, that it is balanced.
The only magic system I know very well is the one of D&D (3rd or 5th edition). In this system the wizards have two important limitations: 1) the power level of the spell based on the character level 2) the number of spells castable per day.
In the magic systems presented in the handbook “Fantasy Hero” these limitations seem not be implemented (at least in my opinion). The mandatory roll on the skill “Power: Magic” seems not to be enough… If during the character creation the player put a lot of CP in this skill the result could be that the wizard could cast one single but very powerful spell (and this can be really unbalancing).
Do you have introduced some house rule to limit the CP expendable for the skill “power: Magic”??
Second point: how to limit the spells per day?? Even if a spell can cost Endurance, the recovery phase would virtually allow the wizard to cast an infinite number of spells per day. Is this acceptable for you? I repeat once again, my only reference is the D&D where, with the exclusion of the cantrips, an infinite number of spells would be a nightmare.
Thanks for your help and please excuse me for my poor English.

This exercise was inspired by a unique map I found on DA.
    https://black-falcon01.deviantart.com/art/Map-537204736

Here's the background. 1000 years ago a meteor struck and destroyed a continent. It should have been a mass extinction event, but it was not. The continent survived as a mass of islands. Many of the buildings survived intact and undamaged as did many of the animals...the people all died.

The meteor introduced magic (both clerical and arcane) to the world. Very rare items of master craft make became magic overnight. Clerics found they could cast spells the next day, and studious types started inventing spells.  Nations found themselves in a magic arms race. Today there is a magic culture a 1000 years strong, fully supported by the surviving nations and newer, independent universities. Even necromancers are not shunned, although they still creep people out.

Further, it brought monsters. They spontaneously erupted everywhere. the intelligent races of goblins, orcs, etc, were planted on the remaining continents, though some have found their way to the Scattered islands. A new race of goblin men also arrived, they have all the stats and beauty of Half-elves, but are green and consider themselves "High Goblins." these High Goblins are civilized, love the arts, but are militaristic conquerors and slavers.

This world uses the magic system that divides the cost of spells by three. its is a DnD magic heavy world, and players can start with a simple magic item purchased with character points if they wish. artificers exist who can suck the magic out of unwanted items and create new items to taste...but it will cost you.  (I grew up with DnD and would like to play a similar world). The meteor also ripped through dimensions weakening the barriers. as a result, elementals and genies have been enslaves (while alive, elementals are unintelligent and are used to power certain items).

    Races:
    The brothers of Man:
Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Half elves (rare), Dark elves (they are identical to elves, have their own above ground nations, and are evil), halflings (they wear shoes and are just 3 foot tall people with pointy ears - no beards)

Goblinkind: goblins, orcs. gnolls, ogres, giants, and High Goblins ( they have all the stats and beauty of Half-elves, but are green ).

    Religions of the world
Jupiter: the head honcho. Leader of the pantheon. God of storms, emperors, war, the legal system, and humans.
Hera: his wife. Goddess of family, hearth, home, and agriculture. Patron of the halflings.
Hekate:  goddess of magic, both good and evil. patron of the dark elves.
Vulcan: God of the forge, creation, Artificers (makers of magic items), volcanoes and patron of the dwarves
Dionysus : God of wine, hedonism, brothels, casinos, and parties
Hades: god of the dead, necromancy, often involved in evil underhanded scheme to overthrow the gods and make himself ruler. secret patron of goblinkind
Mercury: Animal Husbandry, Travel, Trade, Athletics, Language, Thievery, Good Luck, Guide of the Dead, Herald of the Gods
Venus: Goddess of: Love, Beauty, Pleasure, Procreation, the Arts, patron of the elves

Temples (and clerics) can be either pantheonic, or dedicated to a single diety. The alignment of a cleric matters not - good or evil they are not denied their spells.
HEALING is run by a house rule: it can be cast as often as desired.

The Scattered Islands: a continents worth of land has been shattered into millions of islands. The adventure is set here. Even after a 1000 years, most of the islands have never been explored. Every island, no matter how small has a fresh water source (its magic). evolution has sped up and land locked animals are all different from island to island. Civilizations have risen and fallen in the isles. People of all sorts have fled here, criminals, exiles, pirates and escaped slaves. Typically, kingdoms are restricted to one island. Every magical resource (no matter how rare) is found in the islands.  The climate is temperate (ala, North America) with no deserts, and no snow in winter. Winter is a time of cold and very bad storms, sailing is impossible for much of winter. The season is short however, just three months.

Players are required to have a skill involved with sailing of some sort (at least Profession Sailing). Boats are the only way to get around. Horses are rare. Lamas and mules are used to move cargo on land. Abandoned lamas are found on many islands.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    THE CHALLENGE:
You don't need to do the math or spell out in points, bur create an island kingdom, a ship (magical or not), or a character. I am not so worried about stats,  just be creative.
The characters are all 6E 175 point starting characters. starting magic has a limit of 45 active points (divide the cost of spells by three).  Clerics need the faith skill and mages buy skills by school. Outside of that...have fun.

There have been discussions over the years of the roll low mechanic for combat.  Many, and I have been one of them, have espoused the view that we would be far better off starting over and rolling high because that tends to make more sense to more people: high = good.  Not only that, but the target number would be a 10, which is a much friendlier number than an 11.

Now whilst I have seen the argument made for combat, it does not seem to apply to skill rolls: people seem perfectly happy with them because the high = good is already built in – you just look at the skill roll you need to roll under.

The mechanic for combat and skills is in fact exactly the same but they feel very different, at least to me.

Now I’m sure this has been kicked around the park before, but why not treat combat rolls like skill rolls?  Here is a tweak on that concept:

You have a combat skill roll based on your OCV and DCV.  The Attack skill  is 11+OCV, and you have to roll under that to hit: this is slightly different from how combat works at present in that you can roll high and hit a very low DCV, but in practice this rule change will usually only affect characters without increased combat stats (usually NPCs) and speed overall combat.  It also gives a ‘miss’ mechanic if you want it, and is more in line with the way skill rolls often work.  If you do not like it, skip that bit.

Roll 3d6 and work out how much you succeeded by i.e. your skill less your roll and that is the DCV you can hit.

Example: You have and OCV of 5 so your combat skill is 11+5 = 16.  You need to roll a 16 or less to potentially hit anything.

If you roll a 13 you can hit a DCV of 16-3 = 3 or less

One nice thing about this approach is that you can also switch it around easily and use Defensive Combat Skill (DCS) or Defence Skill.  This would be 10+DCV (yes, 10, because there is an advantage in Hero to being the attacker).  The same mechanic then applies.

Roll 3d6 and work out how much you succeeded by i.e. your skill less your roll and that is the OCV that can hit you.

Example: You have a DCV of 4 so your combat skill is 11+4 = 15.  You need to roll a 15 or less to potentially avoid a hit.

If you roll a 10 the difference is 15-10 so an OCV of at least 5 is required to hit you.  (You can turn this around using the same numbers: if you had an OCV of 5 then you have a combat skill of 16, and a roll of 12 means you can hit 16-12 = 4 DCV or worse.  I use 12 because we are ‘reversing the burden’ – a good DCS roll is the same as a bad OCS roll)

You can use defence rather than attack to reduce the burden on the DM or you could use both in a climactic duel: each party rolls their OCS when attacking and the defender has to match the success with their DCS roll to avoid damage.

Mechanically this is exactly what we are doing at present but it feels cleaner to me, just presenting it that way, and it feels like more of a unification of skill and combat mechanics.

    Thoughts?

This is how I've presented the to hit mechanic for over a decade.  The export format I created for Hero Designer per-calculates the to hit target number automatically.  You can see an example of the character sheet here and you'll find the combat values on the 3rd page.

Its plain from any reading that it wasn't intended to be racist, you can tell that from these words right here:

Criticizing a movie does not make anyone racist in any remotest sane sense of language or reason.  You can say a movie sucks even if it didn't without being racist.  I can say "John Woo's film The Killer was crap"  without being racist against Asians or Chinese in particular.

Surely you understand that??   I mean you can infer whatever you want but claiming its RACIST to criticize a movie is a bit much, don't you think?

I'm a Christian.  It is increasingly difficult to find a movie portrayal of a Christian who is not depicted a hypocrite, bigot, sexual pervert, mean spirited snob, or otherwise terrible person.  The TV show Law & Order has made a decade-long career of portraying Christians as monsters in all its variations and iterations.  We're kind of used to that in modern culture, so the offense is slight, but its more or less constant.

And you know what?  Any problem I have with that is in me.  Its my problem.  How I respond to something is on me.  Yes, some actions are so naturally and reasonably objectionable that any ordinary person will react poorly - our laws cover that.  But the truth is, the offense we feel and the way we respond to things is because of how we feel and react.  Nobody compels me to be upset or offended or shocked.  Nobody owes me an apology for the 9800th portrayal of a Christian as a terrible person, a murderer, a pervert, etc.

The British approach television as stories rather than seasons; they make a show as long as it takes to tell the story they have, then they're done.  If there are ideas to do another such story, they do another series.  Its odd to American audiences, but in the modern internet age, its a better option I think

Well obviously you need a mix.  Batman is supposed to be a detective type, grim and gritty.  Superman should be noble and uplifting and heroic.  Flash can be whatever they want, which apparently is a dumb spaz kid.  Its just got to be a mix instead of everyone the same way because Batman made a lot of money.

You could decide that the visual aspect of his Force TK was the slow, unsteady, floaty effect that they used in the movies.  It might require a raised hand or eyes closed in concentration.  But you don't have to -- it's obvious because the rules say it is obvious.  Can your character see?  Then you can tell who it is.  What it looks like is unimportant.
