Yes, most of Hero System's complexity is in character generation.  I don't find the actual play that complex.

And building a first-level D&D character is fairly simple in terms of choices for the player to make, compared to a Hero System character.  Then again, most Hero System characters are not "first-level", this is (IMHO) both a draw for experienced players and a barrier to new players.  Even a higher-level D&D character is still simpler in choices (okay, next level... spend skill points here, roll for hit points, new feat, stat improvement).  I know players that take great enjoyment in planning their character's path all the way to level 20 when the character is first created.  I get that enjoyment.

I think that would be an *excellent* way to bring in more new players, including D&D players.  👍

There are (again, IMHO) Hero books that are closer to that ideal than Champions Complete and Fantasy Hero Complete.  Narosia.  Widening Gyre.  Western Hero.  Not at that ideal, but closer.  Single books that can be used to run a campaign, with the setting and appropriate power levels.

Although for a supers RPG that is more D&D-like, Mighty Protectors (V&V 3.0) is closer than Hero System will ever be.

The more I think about it, the more I think you nailed it with this:  "Basically an On Rails version of character generation."  That's a basic difference between D&D and Hero System.  Players will, in general, prefer either a more constrained or more open character generation method (IMHO).

Rifled barrels would offset some range penalties usually but in a weapon that small it doesn't matter one way or another.

The "selfishness" aspect is one I look to a lot.

As a Good person, I might step aside and recommend a colleague for a promotion because they are better suited for the role, so it will be better for everyone, even if it is worse for me.  I might do so just because we are equally qualified, but my colleague really needs that raise to put her kids through college.

As a Neutral person, I will compete for the promotion to the best of my ability, even to the point of embellishing my skills relevant to the role and disparaging other candidates.

As an Evil person, I might sabotage the organization to make my competition look bad, get compromising pictures to blackmail the decision maker or even have other candidates removed from the equation (cut brake lines, for example).

However, in many larger than life gaming milieus, "true Evil" might be absolute and unselfish devotion to an evil cause, organization, deity, etc.

Those things that spring immediately to mind are going to depend on what you mean by "good advice."

If you are looking for the rules, the 5th edition book "The Ultimate Base" has the most modern rules set (by default, the "current" rules) and loads of sidebar discussions and ideas on how the rules may be applied or tweaked to get what you're looking for.

If you have that book, and are looking for something more along a primer to what is a pretty word- and idea- dense tome, I would recommend the first incarnation of the base rules as presented in Champions II, available in PDF from the store on this site.

If you just want to build a base and are looking for ideas or need some help realizing something that is stuck in your head, the board is probably the highest-population player-to-player and GM-to-GM discussion density of any place on the web.  Feel free to post questions here, and so long as the don't require posting long excerpts of the copyrighted rules, well-- there seems to be nothing HERO fans like more than building stuff.

Although I doubt it, Duke, it's possible you may have got that from Fuzion.

It had an addition Stat for Hit Points equal to your STUN. You took 1 hp per 10 Stun taken and if you ran out of hp then you took Body. Not immediately deadly, but if you had multiple fights in a short period you could be in rough shape.

    Pretty much that.

I am delighted that Champions II has been referenced!  It includes a paragraph that sums up so much of why I don't charge for bases:

    Going line-by-line:

The purpose of a base is, apparently, to be attacked in the base.

I am not charging someone for the location in which they are attacked.

The more intricate your base, the less secure it is-- at least, that seems to be the ideal.  Never mind the points you spent for the Concealment Roll!  If your base is anything cooler than hiding under a manhole cover, villains are just going to get in and attack you.

The security measures for which you paid points are meaningless, and will only serve to prevent your reinforcements from arriving.

The best and most effective part of the base is the character team itself.

Sure: I'm sure the rules are changed and better expressed, but at the very heart of the matter is this:

The base is an enabler.  "using your lab in your base can give you a plus 1 to plus three bonus!"

When you read your skill usage rules, using _any_ skill-appropriate lab will give you that same bonus.  Heck, you can use the points you'd spend on a lab in your base to buy up Skill a point or two!  Or just use anyone's lab.  That seems to be a common theme in comics anyway, right?   Ooh-- even better!  Your badguys aren't constantly breaking into the borrowed lab!

I can go on, but like four people have replied while I write this, so I'm just going to state my absolute agreement that bases are nothing but point sucks for PCs.  If you want a base-- fine.  You can have it.

Glad you're enjoying it!  I'm actually using this to chronical our game - because a couple to several weeks pass between games, we actually read these at the beginning of each game, to remind us all where we left off.

    Your questions:
No, I made that clear to the team - so they have taken Silvercloud to Somewhere, to copy other alien tech, to at least give the sector a fighting chance. My buddy, who is remote most the time and on Zoom uses a dice rolling app.  My wife, who is sitting in the living room with me, in front of our trusty folding gaming table, is seriously rolling huge hands full of dice into a nice wood and felt dice rolling tray-thing and counting them out!  They both get a thrill out of it. It's been great fun.  We have started talking about our next game, since we're likely only a few games from the end now...  Doesn't sound like it's going to be Champions; more likely Shadowrun or something like that.

Anywho, glad you're liking it, and I'll post them all here until we're done.

Heh.  [Off-topic]  we have multiple folks in our gaming group GM at some point.  One of them uses a huge plastic-box-subdivided-into-small-boxes-with-small-3d6-in-each-box to roll for mooks shooting at the heros (this is in a Golden Age Champions game).

GM: "The Nazi soldiers shoot" " :rolls box:  "They all miss"

I assume he's at least scanning for 3's (maybe 4's and 5's as well).

My group does RAW for Skill vs. Skill rolls, and here's why I prefer it to your mechanic:

The first roll determines how well the first actor does.

Example:  Stealth vs. PER Roll.  If the stealthy character fails the roll, everyone hears it (the classic "steps on a branch and breaks it") and decides how to respond.  If the stealthy character makes the roll, the skill/vigilance of the opposition matters.

My group does it slightly differently:  the attacker still rolls.

    11 + OCV -3d6 = DCV hit.

    In your above example, PC "I attack God Monster".  Rolls 3d6 = 10.  11 + 8 - 10 = 9.  "I hit a DCV of 9".  GM "Prayer hits.  Roll damage".

    GM "God Monster is peeved He attempts to attack Prayer."  Rolls 3d6 = 8.  11 + 7 - 8 = 10.  "God Monster hits a DCV 0f 10."  PC "Prayer is hit."

As an alternate, you roll and note where the roll is compared to 11.  For every point under 11, you hit that many points over your OCV.  For every point over 11, you hit than many points under your OCV.  If you roll 11, you hit your OCV.

    Hello, all you Hero old-timers! 😁 😘

SCUBA Hero here.  I've not been on the forums much, but want to start spending more time here again.

I am still with my long-term gaming group of mumble mumble years.  I've switched jobs and travel quite a bit, so I sometimes cannot attend the sessions, but I do when I can and enjoy it muchly.  The current campaign is golden age; I am playing a speedster named DoubleTime! (the exclamation point is in his name).  I've had a lot of fun running him.

Lots of names here I still recognize, and new friends to meet.  So say 'hi' here if you'd like and look for me around on the forums.
