unclevlad Posted February 4, 2023 Report Posted February 4, 2023 In yet more utterly unsurprising news... Kyrie Irving has told the Nets he wants to be traded before the deadline, which is next Thursday (the 9th). The general comment is, he's doing this to cram a contract extension down the Nets' throat. He's extended the lead over Harden as the most toxic player in all US sports. At some point, you'd think teams would learn this. They may well...he's a UFA at the end of the season, his current contract is $37M, he'll want a LOT more than that. So you'd have to trade major assets AND work the extension financially? So the thought is, it's probably not workable now. Vegas dropped the Nets from 2nd favorite for the title, to 7th, just on this. Quote
Cygnia Posted February 4, 2023 Report Posted February 4, 2023 Man, I'm glad the Cavs and the Celtics no longer have this nut on their teams... Quote
unclevlad Posted February 4, 2023 Report Posted February 4, 2023 If you're a Nets fan, too, what's so freaking INFURIATING is...they've been playing VERY good ball after the terrible start, at least before Durant went down. Not that I've got any sympathy for the team. They made their bed, with Irving and Simmons. Quote
unclevlad Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 Surprise, surprise, surprise.... Gonzaga has won 10 straight WCC championships. Their only consistent rival has been Saint Mary's. Coming into the matchup at Saint Mary's tonight, SMC was *up* a game...9-0 in conference to the Zags' 8-1. Now they're 2 up, after winning in OT. This also means that SMC can win the regular season title even if they lose the rematch at Gonzaga. They also did it with a nice comeback...down 10 late in the first, but their smothering defense squeezed the Bulldogs the entire 2nd half and OT. It was a rocky day for the top 10, too. 1, 6, 7, and 8 all fall...kind of the norm the last several years. Quote

I've heard the Mountain West, the Big XII, and the PAC-12 all mentioned. None of these conferences currently has any non-football members*, but for school with as high a basketball profile as Gonzaga (women's as well as men's), I suppose an exception could be made. *The MWC does have a football-only member, though—Hawai'i. unclevlad Posted February 5, 2023 Report Posted February 5, 2023 The MWC is a step up from the WCC, but not enough of one, I'd think. Quote

Pariah Posted February 8, 2023 Author Report Posted February 8, 2023 So apparently LeBron James is now the all-time leader in scoring in the NBA. Yay, I guess. Quote

unclevlad Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 Definitely Wilt. Speaking of Lakers...twould seem Russell Westbrook wore out his welcome in LA, apparently in a shouting match in the locker room last night. So today, he's gone It's a 3-team trade. He goes to Utah, who reportedly plan to buy out his contract. Not sure what that means exactly...whether he'd technically be a free agent, or considered under contract to the Jazz for the rest of the season. Hard to say if anyone would want him this late in the year. Quote

Hard to say if anyone would want him this late in the year. So here's the headline from one of the local media outlets in SLC. Note the name that is conspicuous in its absence. Jazz trade Conley, Vanderbilt, Beasley, and Alexander-Walker in 3-team deal My best guess is that Westbrook never wears a Jazz jersey. Danny Ainge probably presents him with his buyout by the end of the week. Which is probably just as well. Westbrook isn't exactly adored in Jazz country. Quote

unclevlad Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 The Athletic this morning also postulated a buyout, but offered the Bulls and Clippers as landing spots. The overnight shock to me: Kevin Durant is heading to the desert. Nets trade him to Phoenix for a draft *haul* long term...first round picks in 23, 25, 27, and 29. And some other bits and pieces. The new owner doesn't go home, he goes big In Phoenix. They also ran a reader poll..."is Aaron Rodgers attention starved, or am I <the newsletter writer> a hater?" 92% said Rodgers is attention-starved. Rather leading form of the question, but man.......... Quote

unclevlad Posted February 10, 2023 Report Posted February 10, 2023 The NBA trade deadline is rather wild and wooly. The Lakers pull the plug completely on the original supporting cast, trading Patrick Beverly who never worked out, and Thomas Bryant, who didn't seem to fit. Around the league, too many trades for me to track, but several significant players...recent high draft picks...got moved. EDIT: secondary thought. One weird thing about NBA trades is, when draft picks are involved, how many of them are FAR into the future. To wit: the Durant trade...first rounders in 23 (ok, that's immediate), 25 (that's not too far), 27 and 29...way out there. Wizards send Rui Hachimura to the Lakers for Kendrick Nunn...and picks in 28 and 29. I kinda get it, but a pick so far in the future would seem to have little current value.... Some of this is likely that the NBA draft is only 2 rounds. Another aspect is, the success rate for draft picks rolls off quickly. This story's a few years old now (2016) but the basic conditions haven't changed. https://the-cauldron.com/the-2nd-round-and-misuse-of-probability-402639df1038 It's also plausible that those draft picks are used to balance out monetary issues. There's rules about trading a Westbrook and his massive contract for 2-3 players on league-minimum rookie deals. Can't do it; the total compensation has to balance out, more or less. Quote
