World Creation Superdraft 7: July 2023

Recommended Posts

On the eighth say, Alitheon declared,

“Let there be a chosen people

to represent me in Creation.

They are the embodiment of light and sky,

wise in the most powerful magics,

hued in all colors of the spectrum.

Let them nurture Creation, that it may

remain wondrous in my sight.

Let them share their wisdom with the other peoples,

that they might remain in my light.”

It would be nice if these included bonus picks too, to make it easier for us to know where we are up to.

Once there was a wisp that Fitz admired. She used her little nudges to help people find things. Keys and kittens, lost children and lost paths. By the laws of hypostases, he reached a portion of his essence out to her, and elevated her. She is no longer limited to mortal awareness. Pray to Strangcharm. Pray to Fitz. But spare a prayer for the one that finds the little things that fell out of notice.

Alchemists and chirurgeons can, and do, transplant and merge parts of animals as well as people. Some chimerical beasts are useful, such as the elephant/camel/iguana hybrid, able to survive long periods of heat or cold without water, used to pull caravans across the barren Murdered Land. Some are more whimsical, such as the goat/chicken hybrid that lays cheese omelettes. Some are beasts of war or guarding, as ferocious as they are bizarre. And some of them just make people go "Wut?"

636252772225295187.jpeg

But these are not the fauna of Etterskell. First, there are many kinds of them, so they could not be a singular gift; and second, though they were made using her gifts, Etterskell did not make them, sanction their creation, or, in some cases, admit that They even heard of them.

Etterskell did give one special creature to the Chimney as Their special gift. They noticed that some people were not exactly ethical in how they obtained parts for transplantation. Well, Aziza, as God of Philosophy, had to explain why ikidnapping people to break them up for spare parts was unethical, but Etterskell eventually understood eventually. Nagus Sterling then explained people's motivation as an issue of supply and demand: More people wanting replacement limbs, organs, and bodies than people willing to donate.

So Etterskell created the Organ Tree. It's both flora and fauna, sort of: a short, rather squat tree that grows body parts. Left alone, the trees grow spare eyes (nestled within protective flowers), and humanoid arms suitable for humans, dwarves, elves, or satyrs. (Not sure about genii. Shape's right, but I'm not sure genii are made of conventional flesh and blood.) Inside the hollow trunk grow a selection of hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, and other viscera. Alchemical treatment can prompt an organ tree to grow other spare parts, or parts for other species, sapient and otherwise. For instance, Etterskell made a special subdwarf variety just for Strangecharm's talking mice. The variety bred for wisps is actually quite common, but generally overlooked. Anyway, the tree does much to fulfill the demand for transplantation parts -- though not for entire, intact bodies.

Just don't be too picky about getting parts that match the appearance of the rest of your body.

Organ trees reproduce through their arms. The arms are easily pulled from the trunk and can then scuttle on their fingers for about half an hour, if they aren't promptly attached to a suitable body. An accidental error in Etterskell's design means that if an arm is left unattended, it crawls off to find a body and can attach itself without a chirurgeon's guidance. It is best to keep your organ tree fenced, or nearby people might wake up with a sudden extra arm grafted on just anywhere. Because ripe arms sometimes drop off of their own volition and go wandering.

If a free arm can't find a body, it works its shoulder into the ground. It eventually grows into a new tree. Praise be to Etterkell for Their generosity!

Gift to Civilization:  Competitions and Champions to settle disputes and to Entertain in lieu of war

The High Exchequer unfurled the large papers with the glee of a child on its anniversary. “See here, acolyte, the expansion will be glorious! The dead world is perfect for this new enterprise. It was not the first, but it was sure to be the greatest.”

The clerk pored over the plans for the new Hedonia Arena and muttered a psalm under his breath. “Competition is good for business.”

The High Exchequer nodded sagely approving of his apprentice’s study. “Acquisitions, 8:61. Good, good. That is the reason I chose you for this mission. I want you to oversee the initial construction while I am away at the high temple of Ce'Diya. You will also need to begin arrangements for the accoutrements. We’ll need tickets…”

“Concessions…” offered the apprentice.

With a grin the old accountant said, “Merchandise…”

“Seating…”

“Luxury seating!”

“Souvenirs of all kinds…”

“Contracts…”

“Weapons…”

The Arena was in good hands. His apprentice clerk was an enthusiastic and talented businessman.

Maybe too talented,” he reflected.

Nadiya was most often depicted as a young woman with old eyes (or was it the other way around oh we've done this before) carrying a candle yet always seeming to have more candles to share. Some aspects of her are said to be more spectacular, for folks always seem to enjoy a good spectacle. Some people even see better looking through spectacles.

But we digress.

The flutterbys could be breathtakingly lovely, but it was their larvae that did the work. Skywood trees were rather handsome, but it was after a craftsman put skill to them they became sleek ships or fancy and fine elven bows.

Now the tournaments and contests could be ALL about Spectacle, but mortals didn't always remember Brightbringer was in part behind that. No, that credit went to the composite goddess Ce'Diya.
But mortals are fussy creatures. The faithful are less demanding than the jaded agnostic audience, but all of them sometimes want a SIGN of a god's power.

"Signs, Signs, everywhere a sign, doubting my divinity, wasting my time..."

Ahem, yes, anywho, we were talking about spectacles. Divine ones.

When one is needed, when folks NEED to see the goddess cares directly for them in a most unrepentantly over the top way? Nadiya Brightbringer sends her one of a kind mythic champion Simacada!*

Simacada is huge, a great flying whale like creature whose songs carry even further  then the glow from its bejeweled skin! Those who see or hear it it feel gloom and despair lift from them! Mental Illness is abated while it is in the area. Depresssion lifts! And resolve is found! Those ready to fold find new hope to carry on.  Fear eases, and while people remain themselves ,it makes it easier for them to be their better selves, to embrace what is good in themselves. So inspiring is it that they may find themselves capable of great deeds in the face of what should be overwhelming odds. They are reinvigorated!
Even when it leaves, many report the memory of it's songs (Real ear worms of inspiration) and the recall of the sight of it makes them better off than they were before it came, if only a little.
Simacada is meant to bring out the greatness in people that Nadiya sees in THEM, rather than do all of things for them, but it can fight when it needs to, to defend itself, or others. It's powerful, a gentle giant best left unprovoked. More often, when it takes on a direct action, it is used for evacuations to save innocents from natural (And sometimes unnatural) disasters.
And it is quite the spectacle!

Guardian/Mythic Monster Pick: Simacada (Better than Moby Dick , an Air Strike, and Cheerleading Convention combined)

Hedonia was not the first city dedicated to Nagus Sterling, the Earl of Exchange. At the Base of the World stands a glorious holy city of excess (or city of holy excess) known simply as The Great Market. An impressive temple to Nagus stands at the heart of the bazaar. It serves as bank, action house, appraisal institute, cambist, and school of finance.

The priests of Nagus Sterling are bankers and accountants. (One does not seek out a priest of Nagus for healing, although one of the largest hospitals in the realm is located in the Market. It’s the very best care, but you will pay for it.) His devotees are often merchants and traders of all types. The impoverished send him their desperate pleas, as do gamblers, thieves, and politicians.

Bonus: Geography, The Great Market is a city of trade, of exchange, of negotiation. Anything can be bought and sold in The Great Market from spice and clothing to mercenaries and magic. All races and all churches have representation in the Market. It truly is where all cultures come together for the greatest trade requires the greatest audience.

At this point, Oeneous could probably chime in with something about beer goggles.

After such a blatant display of her champion, Nadiya went back to her subtler ways. Including working a miracle so profound and powerful, many never realized it happened at all.

An elf who had gained an extra right arm that had snuck in from an organ tree.  This made him feel freakish and deformed... his paramour, a fickle woman had distanced herself and their relationship broke. He lamented and left his home to avoid mockery and pity alike.

But the miracle seized on his situation, and when he came to the great Arena of Hedonia, he discovered that while a GOOD swordsman before, thanks to being right handed and have TWO right hands, he was actually amazing now! His new career was a prosperous one allowing his heart to heal and him to search for love again.

A pregnant satyress caught a nasty disease  and was miserable for a month fearing for her unborn child's life.  While she was laid out and helpless for a moon, her child survived childbirth, and was born with an immunity to the self same illness.  One that might carry in the line!

Two dwarf merchants, one dealing in peanut butter , the other chocolate, had their two shops nearby each other in competition for hungry potential customers. A great storm blew through the area... costing them greatly, destroying their shops! BUT, while individually they were ruined, the two dwarves, named Reese and Kups, discovered that while the peanut butter had gotten all over the chocolate (Or was it the chocolate had gotten into the peanut butter) the two tastes tasted great together! They became partners, and more valuable than even their collective recovery and profits, they became friends!

Among each people, such examples arose, though often taken for granted.

People may learn more from defeats than they do victories. They can grow stronger from hard challenges. Innovation can be born in times of desperation.

The clergy of Nadiya Brightbringer refer to such things as "The Silver Lining Miracle". That in every bad situation, there is, however small, an element of good. This is not always  sufficient to truly provide balance. After all, if, for example,  it's   hardly comforting to hear "At least there's more places to park your chariot" if half your town is burned to soft cinders but your grandchildren may grow to make sure the rebuilt town is better prepared in putting out and preventing housefires. It does not excuse willful evil no matter how much manipulators might try to rationalize their beastly behavior. Be it balanced or not, there is always, ALWAYS, some good in every bad situation.

Mister Rancor remained unfulfilled from his efforts in the new cylindrical world.  That was probably only going to continue as the God of Hatred had never felt happy.  Any time he felt a twinge of what could be considered a positive feeling, he drove them back down into his gut.

He did spend more time than not watching the events of Hedonia.  Those individuals were very easy to manipulate and another idea that would sew the seeds of division and hatred sprung to his mind.  He had been engaged with the subtle aspects of his hatred crusade recently as Crax had taken the more direct method.  When he had pulled his son out of the last conflict, Rancor was irritated... or proud.  He wasn't sure which it was.

Mister Rancor decided something new.  Other Gods seemed focused upon insects and plants, but Rancor wanted more, no matter how entertaining it may have been.  He constructed a sister-city to Hedonia, built just to the southern border of the city which he named Austere.  It was a reflection of Hedonia and he encouraged easily manipulated humans and other such bio-forms to take up residence in the new city.  He spread the feeling of how these people were being judgmental of those people who spent their time and wasted their lives in Hedonia.

To make it even more of a play, he had these beings created temples to both Aziza, to the reflection of the hedonistic land, and Clarkent Kal, the hero with a heavy dose of righteousness.  Mister Rancor knew that the followers did not always understand or out and out misinterpret the words and beliefs of their deities so having them launch such a campaign of intolerance or manipulation against the people of Hedonia in the name of these two gods was something that "almost" tickled Rancor.

Geography:  sister city of Austere, built beside Hedonia.

Interference, pick 1:  Building two temples to other gods and directing the people of Austere to carry a campaign in these Gods' names against Hedonia.

I did not pick yesterday so this works together.  I believe I only have the bonus Interference pick and the bonus monster pick remaining.
