And in the Raiders' home stadium, no less.

Twitter can't believe John Elway delivered Super Bowl trophy to Chiefs

I guess all of this just proves one thing: the Chargers are still irrelevant.

But they may not be for much longer. Justin Hebert is growing into the role of an NFL starting quarterback -- maybe not Patrick Mahomes, but he is good enough to give the Chargers a shot every week. Mind you, playing second fiddle in the LA market isn't fun (just ask the Clippers and Angels) but all three of these sides always have the chance to be really good if management doesn't do something stupid like alienating Shohei Ohtani or just about every word and action of former Clips owner Donald Sterling. And it's especially disheartening to share an arena with another, more popular team. (There's talk of the Clippers finally getting their one arena, as opposed to asking to rent out the Honda Center where the NHL's Anaheim "Mighty" Ducks play.

Taylor Swift got a lot of coverage but not to the detriment to the game. We don't get the same 'feed' so you will have seen things I did not. Apparently she downed a pint of beer quite impressively so the presenters said but no-one saw it except in the stadium. She got into it. And kudos for travelling all the way back from Japan to see the game.

That game will have shredded nerves.

All hype, and there is a lot, aside, at least, unlike a lot of celebs who seem to be there for the camera and have no real emotion showing (Jay-Z comes to mind), She did seem to be living and dieing on every play in the 4th and OT, much like any fan of either team.

Hey, it took JayZ-level wealth to buy a ticket.

Well, your argument basically kills any hope for Charger fans, as the Spanos family's been doing moronic things for a long time...like pulling the team out of San Diego.

The Clippers are getting a new building of their own:

And an interesting article about the behind-the-scenes machinations:

Shows how outrageous prices are. Batman did not pay that much for everything in batcave.

The price for Super Bowl spots has been mind-boggling for years...and one aspect of this SB?  The most watched TV show...of all time.  The advertisers had to love it when it turned out to be Chiefs-Niners, because that was absolutely gonna be a ratings bonanza.

https://www.superbowl-ads.com/cost-of-super-bowl-advertising-breakdown-by-year/

The American public has yet to show they have any limit to how much they'll pay to watch football.  Another datum?  In the Athletic this morning...ESPN and the CFP signed a 6 year extension to show the playoffs *exclusively* for $1.3B a year.  The extension starts when the current deal expires...which gives ESPN the 3 playoff games and New Year's Six, for a paltry $600M.

Even if you never go to a game, never buy anything like Red Zone or Sunday Ticket...football probably costs your household somewhere between $100 and $200 a year, I suspect, to cover the various fees/built-in costs, as long as you're not 100% reliant on OTA.  Rebroadcast fees for cable/satellite...football-driven.  Advertising...how much $$$$$$$ does Dr. Pepper spend on its football ads and promos?  Etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

Well, next up?

The combines...if you're that type of fan.  I'm not.

The draft...and the fun of second-guessing SO MANY choices.  Came across this article just now:
https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/how-nil-has-led-to-a-glaring-lack-of-depth-in-the-2024-nfl-draft

It's becoming somewhat similar to the NBA draft...but the NBA core situation is, there's so few slots that come open each year.  But there's also this chart...couple years old now, but I doubt things have changed that much.

(from https://medium.com/@burakcankoc/what-are-the-odds-to-become-an-all-star-for-each-draft-pick-2d113d6b82e5)

Another analysis showed that only 20% of NBA players drafted in the second round are playing, between 5 and 10 years after the draft.

That's likely why the NBA dropped down to only 2 rounds...let the players try to latch on where they can.

In the NFL, from the sound of it, the analogous situation would be that 3rd and 4th rounders might well represent the new threshold of expecting someone who can stick.  Heck, success rates for later rounds *now* are pretty poor, and with a much thinner pool?  It'll only drop, clearly.

I smell scapegoat: 49ers fire DC Wilks.

<sarcasm almost always on>Might as well fire special teams coach, cause if kicker makes the extra point like they are paid for, 49ers win. obviously coaches fault. <sarcasm temporarily off>

I read an article today suggesting that the Broncos might trade up to draft Caleb Williams.

Is that recall, the last two quarterbacks the Broncos traded up to draft for Paxton Lynch and Tim Tebow. Have we learned nothing?

Eh, forget the terrible selections they made.

Trading up for the #1 pick in their situation is disastrously bad.  It'll cost them draft capital because they fell down into the middle, and they have MULTIPLE needs.  It'll cost them $$$$...mostly signing bonuses, but the cap hit's still the highest.  They still have Wilson's contract.

TL;DR:  it'll be another attempt at an instant fix Right Now, limiting chances long term.  Of course, this is nothing new in American pro sports;  heck, it's practically the norm.

Someone will probably sign him as a backup, but...looks like Jimmy G can start singing Glory Days.

Benched last season.

Just got a 2 game suspension for PEDs.

Expected to be cut by the Raiders, to save the guarantee from kicking in, in early March.  $18M in dead money but still, saves $11M on the cap.

Fun fact: the Denver Broncos have never beaten the Las Vegas Raiders. The last Donkeys win in that rivalry came when the Raiders were still in Oakland.

On the other hand, the last Dallas Cowboys quarterback to beat the Broncos was Troy Aikman, so we have that to lean on.
