death tribble
well the 1911-1920 had the Titanic sinking and the Great War followed by Spanish flu going into 1921-30 and Prohibition in the US and the expansion of Communism through Russian territories. 1931-40 had the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism in Europe and 1941-50 had a war that devastated Europe, China and Japan. Cancer
I missed this when it appeared, perhaps because I was sick with COVID at the time, but NASA's Parker Solar Probe has got some images of the surface of Venus in the visible bandpass, albeit at the long-wavelength end: see https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/sun/parker-solar-probe-captures-its-first-images-of-venus-surface-in-visible-light-confirmed I would not have imagined an astronomical imaging spacecraft looking at Venus, but given that the Parker probe's primary target is the Sun, saturating and damaging the instruments is not going to be an issue for that spacecraft. The features seen in Parker's imager correlate with features on the surface mapped by the Magellan mission's radar imager when it operated in the early 1990s. You are looking through thick cloud layers, but at a surface whose temperature is 465 Celsius ... not as hot (by about 100 degrees C) as the nichrome wire heating element in your toaster as it scorches your bread into toast ... but hot enough that the human eye would note a distinct glow from an object that temperature. rravenwood and Lawnmower Boy
