Well, I finally watched Disney's The Princess and the Frog, and I thought it was a very fine movie. Rather bold and daring for latter-day Disney, too; they killed the villain on screen (poor Dr. Facilier!) and they went so far as to kill the comedy relief sidekick! I never would have believed they'd do that if I hand't seen it. The plot was well done, and the songs, especially Facilier's, were well done. Even if they were bordering on nightmare fuel for the kids (Bom-bom bom-bom bom-bom-bom ARE YOU READY?). And the way Facilier's face was changing when he put the whammy on Naveen after giving hima faceful of voodoo powder makes me wonder just what sort of "magic mushrooms" the doc was using... Also watched the original Secret of NIMH. I'd forgotten how cool this film was when it first came out, not to mention mature. One of the heroes used a swear word, several characters get killed on screen, and the nightmarish scenes in the NIMH flashback... this movie blew me away when I first saw it, and it still holds up. She was also one of the only things worth watching in that horrible Starship Troopers movie. Dina Meyer? I was picturing something like The Postman or something equally bleak and tedious to watch. After the first ten minutes, I was hooked. Lots of action and a great twist sequence at the end. One of the few movies that can honestly claim a "gotcha" moment on me. Never seen it coming.* Footnote under spoiler: Pardon the pun. Also, starting the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in order to expose it to my wife - although I have to go ahead and reveal which characters live or die as they are introduced. Ever since the Serenity movie, she just doesn't trust Joss Whedon anymore. (Admittedly, I haven't been much better since the "Seeing Red" episode of Buffy myself....)
