The Accidental Superhero Group

At the start of one Champions campaign I had the individual heroes each hear one part of a new supervillain team's elaborate plan to break Utility out while he was being transported to court.

  • One hero overheard a mook talking to his out-of-work brother, trying to recruit him to be a driver for an upcoming job with the new villain team, which the mook named (so that hero knew the members of the new villain team)
  • Another hero intercepted a trio of makeshift robots (created by villain #1) stealing a bunch of PRIMUS uniforms from a dry cleaners.
  • Another fought a villain (#2) breaking into a bank vault after hours (to get money to pay the mooks)
  • Another was intercepting a VIPER arms shipment when villains #3 and 4 swooped in, grabbed one of the crates of energy weapons, and flew off
  • Another was investigating the theft of a bunch of UPS trucks by villain #5
  • Another was testifying in court for a different captured villain when villain #6 stole the empty PRIMUS prisoner transport truck (which had a hologram unit allowing it to mask itself as other vehicles including - you guessed it - a UPS truck)

The hero who knew the membership of the new villain team heard about the other encounters in the news and sought out the heroes investigating the other crimes.  Comparing notes, they figured out that the villains were going to use the stolen prisoner transport (with mooks in stolen PRIMUS uniforms) to grab Utility at the courthouse, covering their escape with a dozen UPS trucks driven by mooks.  It not only got the hero team together, it also gave them a recurring villain team as arch-nemeses.

Here is a scenario based on the Champions Universe.

Crusader takes on a group of VIPER agents at a warehouse, and runs into physics professor Tom Adams who was kidnapped to activate a strange scientific device.  A VIPER agent shoots the device with a blaster and the Professor is caught in an explosion granting him the powers that would allow him to become Starburst.

Crusader as a young cousin Christine Saunders who has inherited Cold based energy powers.  After he bails her out of jail their on their way home when he sees a crime taking place.  He tells her to wait as he deals with it, but the criminal tries to use her as a human shield, and she uses her powers to knock him out.  Deciding she likes being on the right side of the law she becomes the superheroine Icicle.

Crusader's day job is security guard Sam Saunders at Harmon Industries, and his boss James Harmon is working on a new powered armor set.  A VIPER Covert Agent Team attempts to steal it, and Sam turns into Crusader to stop them.  Harmon gets into his powered armor and helps Crusader, and decides to become Defender.

Crusader, Icicle, Starburst, and Defender begin to take on VIPER  all over the city while working alone.  Ultimately they are captured and put into a situation where they can't free themselves without the help of the others.  Escaping the trap, they defeat VIPER and decide to work together as The Champions.

Isn't that how the avengers (rick Jones grabs and an wasp and Ironman to help out thir and hulk against Loki) and justice league fighting the Appalachian individually but getting defeated until they work together) originally got together.

My favorite had to be Dynamo 5 the illegitimate offspring of a superman espy get powers from the same radiation source he used after being recruited by his version of Lois lane, when he gets killed.

I was going to add Shrinker, but ran out of time.

The Fantastic Four are the ultimate example.  They take a simple space lauch and end up with superpowers.

They really aren't.  They were already a group and all got their powers in the same event.  The ultimate example is any group that happens to get together but have no connection beyond coincidentally being in the vicinity when a threat appears.  They all got their powers in different ways, nobody deliberately recruited them, they had no pre-existing relationship...in short how superhero campaigns generally start.

How bout the "Misfits of Science" or the "Power Rangers"

The problem with the Misfits of Science is that their powers didn't work reliably.  They were trying to do a "Greatest American Hero" with a group instead of focusing on one individual with powers.  Plus Courteney Cox looked weird with short hair.

CLOWN was before my time.

Surely, you mean Clown vs Steve Long ?

The idea behind the joke was to pit each "Protagonist" against an "Antagonist" they could never outright defeat. Since Foxbat believes (correctly) that he is a fictional character, It made sense to me to make his arch nemesis a writer for Hero Games... and now its not funny anymore because I had to explain it (not that it was very funny to start with... darn you internal monologue)...

  • 2 weeks later...

Just finished reading turbulence by Samit Basu

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9544621-turbulence

It's a fun take on the Superhero origin genre everyone in the story is a passenger on a British airways flight from London to Delhi and falls asleep has strange dreams and wakes up with powers that are their literal hearts desire. Considering the real mix of people on a international flight you would get a very interesting mix of powers and personalities.

Lol.

honestly the dreams are their personal dreams so the architect gets the ability to create amazing materials from basic stuff and shapes them at will.

The wannabe actress gets super like-ability

The air force pilot flies without a plane.

A little girl becomes an anime magic girl complete with overpowered called attacks

And the criminal big man who wants to be the biggest gets growth.

Yes--a reboot that's grimmer and grittier, with unwinnable battles and muted colors and gratuitous nudity! (j/k.)

The first issue pits Defender against Mechanon, Witchcraft against Tekofanes, and Foxbat against the Steve Long.

I'm not too keen on seeing Takofanes naked, and while I like Steve Long, it's not in that way...

Malibu comics had as a basis for paranormals a San Francisco Cable Car full of people exposed to a white event.

Heroes, Villains, entire teams all from one origin.

"The Strangers" I think they were called. I really liked that comic , and I HATE  Marvel for abandoning the Malibu characters after they absorbed the company.

The Strangers were one of the teams but the idea was that EVERY paranormal in that universe was someone from that cable car. Prime, Night Man all of them and all the villains.

Either developing their powers then and there at the start or later after some triggering event. Most living in San Francisco but others were tourists or there on business and went back to their home cities.
