  1. Re: Flight Maneuverability Conversion d'oh! actually, that was the first place I looked... must have seen "* FLY: Use the Flight Power." then somehow glossed over the stuff right under it Thanks again, KS, as always my savior for fantasy hero!
  2. Ok, I'm working on some Monster Conversions from D&D, and I remember once seeing a conversion someone did of the Flight Maneuverability Chart (Ya know, Poor, Excellent, etc.), but now I can't find it anywhere. Anyone got a linky (or at least clue where it might be)?
  3. Re: Spell Law and the Fire Law example Hmm... vancian version on a ley line you could get a multiple of effect depending on how powerful the ley line (or nexus... YIKES!)
  4. Re: Telekinesis - Earth Only I've always liked VPP's for the Master of an Element type, but they can be expensive. I think the main problem there might just be the picking up the earth to move people, though at the same time maybe you don't buy it as only earth, but make it so that it only works if there's earth around to move, and then the sfx of the tk is Earth comes up and does its' thing. The chunk of earth being thrown would just be a regular TK attack with a powerskill roll to make it aoe, or at least that's how I'd think to do it XD.
  5. Re: Hero vs D20 Future I've had an interesting trek to find a good system for the world in my head. Basically, I started with d20 Modern, and was doing fine for a bit, until I started wanting to do stuff that wasn't in the book (master pyroinetic type is the beginning of that). Then I heard of Tri-Stat, and as a generic system knew it would be great for what I wanted. While it was MUCH better for this... there were some oddities. Far too easy to be able to jump MANY miles. Then I heard an inkling of something a little more robust, and I started poking around these forums. Started getting alot of info, so I bought the sidekick, very very thrilled was I. I liked it alot, and never ended up using it because I said "screw this, I want VPPs" . Anyways, the fact is that if you want to make something that's your own, and not held down by the tropes of another system (not saying HERO doesn't have tropes, but no classes and a point structure make me happy), HERO is the way to go. Now I've got two worlds I'm putting together with HERO, a High Fantasy setting that has inspirations from D&D, Exalted, World of Darkness (new and old), Warcraft, Tolkien, and more, and my World in My Head, which in the base setting is our world dealing with the emergence of people who are just better than everyone else, and in the larger setting interdimentional empires at war (though not actual empires). As you can see, I like over the top cinematic stuffs (as well as run-on sentences). Anyways, going back to d20 isn't something I could really do (unless my old DM were the one running it, which is unlikely since I moved 400 miles away), because I wouldn't really be able to make the character I wanted, and just the overall sensation that you HAVE to plan every little thing about your character in advance so you can do something SIMILAR to what you want (or just cause it's teh uber killxors). Nope, really couldn't go back, and certainly not run it again. I'll second HERO Designer, it is such a great program. Before I had it I was making characters by hand with a calculator. Then I put them into HERO and their point totals were very different . Not sure where I did things wrong (ok, I didn't go back and figure out what was different and felt like a huge moron). Now I can actually make characters quickly, and they can even have complicated power structures! Advice: the most complicated part of HERO is the Character Creation process. I recomend getting used to HD, then talking with them about what kind of character they want while you sit at the controls, and pretty much make it for them with their input. Worked great for me. Combat isn't as difficult, it just takes getting used to. There are even ways of making the dice rolls look more like d20 dice rolls without changing the... crud, what's the word... chances... variables... oh phooie. Yeah, my brain has farted. Anyways, you can do roll high and compare if you can't wrap your brain around the default ways of doing it, which might be easier for your group if they're converting from d20. I know I used it, and since it was familiar for everyone it took no longer than in d20. That's the only real mod to the way it's played I would recomend at first since it doesn't really affect anything. If you're interested, pm me and I'll explain it (since this post is already long enough) unless one of the other roll-high followers follows up with it. Well, here's hoping I haven't confused you even more. Wow, I think this is the longest post I've ever made on these forums. Ciao!
  6. Re: Make Love, not Warcraft And of course the Forsaken are still a threat to all life, trying to make a better plague and all (not that everyone knows that...)
  7. Re: Grimoire books content Yes, you can run it from a thumb drive... well, at least I assume so since I can use it on my portable hard drive on any comp. I don't have a printer, either, but it would still be useful just for making the characters, even if you then do an export format to a text file and just copy it onto a csheet by hand. It really helps you wrap your head around some of the stuff in the creation as well, and you won't make math mistakes. Plus, it's cheap.
  8. Re: Grimoire books content I am slightly amazed... did I miss it or something? No one has recomended getting HERO Designer! I can honestly say, as a relative newbie myself, that it's good for new GM's to have. I know when I finally got it and converted my manually done ones, even though I used a calculator I got tons of errors/different costs This will definitely help you make your setting, as you need to populate it (someday) and with my High Fantasy setting, I've been using it to design the racial packages. Definitley use KS's site, he has articles on many things, and many kinds of magic systems, you can just ignore the vancian (I.E. DnD style magic) spells and such if you don't want to accidently head toward THAT. Anyways, as a fellow first time fantasy world builder, GOOD LUCK!
  9. Re: PRE Attacks for scary creatures yup, don't need to detail every nook and sharp edge, just get the idea of what you want it to do, and do it.
  10. Re: [Review] The Ultimate Metamorph And is also a real animal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon_Dog
  11. Re: 4d6 Major Transform: d20 Gamer to Hero Gamer! Well, my semi-successful conversion wasn't so much me trying to get them away from dnd, as much as finding people who wanted to game and I said "HERO!!!!" and they said "COOL! what's that?". I tried doing pregenned characters... they wouldn't have it. So I sat at the controls of HD asking many questions. Verdict: They loved it, especially hit locations (countless loc 13 hits against the berzerker not withstanding) The reason I call it semi-successful is because we only got 2 games in before work came about and we had different schedules (started working at the same place... then the two guys left for other jobs). Oh, and they were both of the type to say "COOL" to the size of FRED (as well as "glad I'm not running it" )
  12. Re: combat calculation 3d6+OCV compared to 10+Modified DCV. Figuring out Succeeding by half isn't as intuitive, but we figured out a quickish way in one of Gazza's threads.
  13. Re: Designing Interstellar Cultures I'd rather have an evil empire of vulcans with the klingons being the underdogs fighting to make people free...
  14. Re: Fighting Techniques of the Middle Ages: anyone read this?
  15. Re: Cleric 3.5 Spell Conversion By the name that of all that is unholy... RISE! Just wondering if any free time you're willing to devote to this project (and not other more fun/important things) has managed to wedge itself into your life. XD Just curious.
  16. Re: Perk: Gold Cross Policy? I think duplication sounds right because that's what a clone is, a duplicate.
  17. Re: Soldiers marching. all I have to say is... LOL
  18. Re: Hero system complexity The way that I got into HERO was actually that I wanted to create my own campaign-verse. I originally tried doing it in another system, and found that I couldn't do what I wanted, so I went looking for something that allowed me to do what I want. What I got was Tri-Stat Anyways, a while later I heard about HERO, and how it did MORE than tri-stat, and so I got it. My prior RPG experience was DnD and Storyteller, with a little bit of Rifts and MERP. I don't claim to understand the last two very well (and the GMs of those games did things differently than by the book alot), but the other two I had/have a good understanding of. In any case, I didn't find HERO to be all that difficult, but I DO see how others would. I was especially fortunate in that I came over from tri-stat, because that also is an effects-based game (though that wasn't very hard to grasp either, for me). HERO has allowed me to do what I want to do (and in fact has inspired me to change it a bit, for the better), and it wasn't too much of a struggle. I got side-kick first, and got FRED asap cause, darn it, I needed to know how a VPP worked . Now I've seen the light, and am coming up with my own Fantasy Setting instead of using dnd. In short (hah!), I didn't find it too difficult, but I definitley see how others would. I think some all-in-one type things really could do a great job of getting new people in, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to try to do both the current business model, and that. On the other hand, the Sidekick Genre books, which require sidekick, sounds like a great idea, and a great middle ground between the current model and the all-in-one, and even mimics dnd... and hey, there isn't really a campaign setting in those 3-part corebooks, though it assumes a partial use of Greyhawk. It could work (says my non-existant knowledge of business ).
  19. Re: House Rule: SFX Default For Adjustment Powers I think what he meant was that you link the power AND the SFX, because you would need an advantage to do "all fire powers", but "fire based EBs" would not require an advantage, and makes more sense than "EBs" because of the vast array of sfx an EB can have.
  20. Re: House Rules Thunderdome - post yours here I think it recomends that you use -2 if you allow people to use sweep and such without TWF, but if you don't then you should use the -1/2. The reason being that if everyone can sweep, then why spend 10 points for no real bonus, while if they don't use the -1/2 because no one else can anyways.
  21. Re: House rule I'm considering, Hit Location Actually, I'm pretty sure that this system isn't intended to be mixed with called shots, because it really is the same thing done two different ways. Personally, I'm very intrigued by this, and I'm not really sure how I'd want to with this. If I can get an actual group I'll have to try things out to see how I like them for high fantasy.
  22. Re: Cow-tillery... Moooooooooooooo!!! Wow, ok, I don't care if it's GURPS, I'm reading the whole story on your site.
