I worry that we've become too dependent on the technological fix, to the point that we all too often don't consider it necessary to change our reckless, wasteful ways.  We just assume someone will invent something that will let us keep on the same way.

...what you said.  "Hit 'em in the wallet" seems to be the only thing many people will even notice these days.

I even have close friends--though maybe they are no longer so close as I might think--who have, at best, a highly cavalier attitude toward the virus.  They never wear masks, even while out and about.  Social distancing?  What's that?  They put their kid on a plane to fly out east without a second thought.  Days after another kid gets home from a country at warning level 3, they are mixing and mingling with the public at large.  I have skipped one gathering with them because of these decisions and behaviors, and this weekend will skip another gathering for the same reasons.  My heart aches, because these are good people and I don't want any of them sick or dead.  I also can't stop them.

This is my feeling regarding going back to school (I report back for inservice stuff in just under a month). I like the teachers and students I work with. I don't want to see anything happen to any of them. But I work in an area with a higher than average number of high-SES (e.g., wealthy white) conservative parents who are more likely to buy in to the whole "It's no worse than the flu" fallacy. A part of me can't help but think that it's inevitable that we're going to lose someone along the way.

We had one of our students die from a freak accident at a summer camp a few years ago, and it completely shook the community. I'm trying to imagine how bad it would be If we lost a student to COVID-19 in the middle of the school year. Or multiple students. Or a teacher. Or a teacher's family member.

It'll be taken seriously when people with millions die.  Many people with many millions.

But what have the Romans ever done for us, such that their candles should be venerated so many years later?

Maybe you could also lob a few Roman candles into my neighborhood to break up the damn late night fireworks.  I don't get up at 4 AM (a little after 5 instead), but damn, wish they'd have some consideration for people who have to sleep to live.

I find these are pretty easy to break up.

When the fireworks go on sale, I stock up on roman candles.

Not only can they be tied to a single fuse, they can be aimed.

Wonder Woman is the only DCEU movie I would watch again. It is the only DCEU movie I own on physical media. It is the only DCEU movie worth watching more than once, IMO.

I'm not sure that the result would be a TTRPG as I define it. But I acknowledge that is a matter of personal preference, and that my definition of what constitutes a satisfying TTRPG experience may be different from yours or anyone else's.

I don't want a pre-determined plot outline, or a set of genre conventions, to dictate the events that occcur, and in what order. I want player/character choices and dice rolls to do that. I am not moved by an adventure module (or GM outline) that says the villain must get away in Act I in order to properly set up the "dramatic climax" expected for Act III. The common term for this is railroading, but whatever you call it, it is symptomatic of a kind of forced plotting that also reduces player agency. This is fine for a writer whose job is to conceive of and adhere to a tightly constructed narrative where every story beat is carefully planned in advance and forced, as necessary, to produce a pre-determined emotional response in the reader. But that is utterly antithetical to my definition of a TTRPG.
