This Ascendant, that is - 2023 supers RPG from some company called Autarch. One of the supers groups I play with is considering dropping the current system (Sentinel Comics we've been playing long enough for the advancement system to start breaking down) for Ascendant and I'm having trouble finding a detailed review, much less an actual play. I remember flipping through the core book at the FLGS when it first dropped and not being impressed, but that was mostly the art and an uninspired table of contents combined with a high price tag. I can't deflect everyone to Champions or anything else I feel confident in, and I'm wondering if I should stick or just wa…

This news just . . . floored me. NC Soft has actually licensed City of Heroes to one of the private servers, Homecoming. I found out yesterday, been making heroes since. It looks like Homecoming doesn't have any major changes over the old live version. It's essentially the live state, with the planned issue updates implemented. Not a huge problem getting back into it. The old cash shop is now a "P2W Store" which lets you buy things from the old cash shop for Influence (in game currency instead). The game always needed an influence sink, so that's a win win. I snipped the announcement post from their forum, but there's also a FAQ and more info in the thread linked: …

I noticed that in recent years Chaosium relaunched its classic role-playing games in conjunction with updated versions of others. Of note was Super World, which I heard a lot of good things about in reflecting the style and feel of the superhero genre. I also came across similar reviews for its fantasy themed RPGs. More recently, Chaosium has released Basic Role Playing, which is arguably the counterpart to the core system rule book published by Hero Games. How is Chaosium Basic Role Playing compared to Hero System? I haven't read Chaosium Basic Role Playing or games under that system like Super World yet, but previously ran Pendragon (1st Ed.) many years ago,…

Not sure if a conversation like this has been done before but I thought it would be a good idea to have a discussion as to what are the best ways to start a new campaign. It of course does not matter what type of campaign, Superheroes, Fantasy, Horror, Spy, Space, whatever, but what should the creator of the campaign look into so that his game has a good start. My first thought is that the GM should make sure that the players he has available are interested in the type of game he is looking to start. And if not, could it still go on with some minor changes or is he/she completely off the mark.

Just taking a survey of the field, so to speak. What does the current landscape of Supers RPGs look like? What's out there (besides Hero) that you all like?

Odd question I know but does anyone happen to have a character sheet for the WotC d20 game? Preferably the original one that uses the 3.0 D&D rules? I cannot seem to find an official one on the web. TIA!

Hey all, I will shed some light on Gemini for people to understand it. Gemini is my passion project that I’ve been picking away at for a few years now. It started as a Rifts conversion to OpenD6 that I ran for fun a few years ago. During that playtest, I realized that the ‘Special Abilities’ system in OpenD6 was a little anemic in some regards (and super overpowered in others). My perspective was mainly influenced by my years of playing Hero. I liked much of the speed and simplicity of OpenD6, and I knew I wanted to merge the two somehow. That led me down the path to something called Chimera. Chimera was just something I did for my friends. A…

Not sure how many of you have had to ask this question, but what do you think would be a good way to get your significant other (of any type, married or not) to accept that you are a gamer. So, how have the rest of you dealt with something like this (assuming they are not a gamer as well of course, but then again perhaps they like different games and not the type you prefer). And this is just a general discussion, as I am completely without any relationship, none of it will affect me personally.

This is the RPG sprung from the Sentinels of the Multiverse boardgame. There are a few mechanics that seem interesting and am thinking of playing it. Anyone had any experience with it?

Just curious if anyone else here is using Talespire as a VTT? Just curious. It's a rule agnostic 3D VTT that I have been loving since 2020. I can't remember if I have already posted this question here. If I Have I will understand if the Mod delete this.

The School Buzz Saw this on Facebook and thought I'd pass this along. After all the grief we RPGers went through in the Eighties, it's always good to see stuff like this.

The Article At 13th Dimension Saw this on Facebook and thought I'd pass it along. Champions does get a mention here, albeit not a particularly favorable one. But there are some seriously old-school games noted here.

I dont usually so PDF reading, sure; I am glad I have them, and in cases like T5, where I haven't been able to find affordable paper copies. It isnt even an aesthetics thing (though it kind of is that as well). The fact is that, even though it is part of my job and hanging out here, stafing at a screen is actively unpleasant for me. It isnt too far removed from staring into a 15 watt light bulb for hours on end. Unpleasant. I am not going to type out all my thoughts on T5- so far I have more than I ever want to type (which is saying something, I think), and I am exactly 54 pages into this 656 pqge book. I did want to take a moment to share my …

I wonder if I fired the proverbial "golden BB" (shooters of LBX-10s in Battletech will understand the term) at a longtime friendship. The shorter version: there's someone I've known since second or third grade. Recently I invited him to join our D&D group. The short version: it did not go well. The longer version (and apologies in advance, there's a good bit to the story): I invited this friend of mine to join our bi-weekly D&D group. Let's call him "new guy" or NG for short. NG's other gaming group had started puttering out by that point. Also, I knew that NG had some real-life issues that were hitting him kinda hard. I thought that enjoying some…

What rule books have special rules in the social section that require players to think more than simply chat and throw dice? I think most rule books only distinguish between types of social skills, such as persuasion, charm, intimidation, and deception, but there are also rules that have good design, such as the Intimacies rule in Exalted 3e Too many rule books focus on improving the combat system, and many times I feel the need for detailed social rules to obtain advice and assistance.
