Has anyone here ever tried using map editors or world editors from video games such as Age of Empires II, Empire Earth, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege, etc. for generating relatively small scale maps. It occurred to me last night that these things have pretty nice editors in some cases, with terrain, buildings, and lots of other goodies that would make for some pretty nice small scale maps. The trick is exporting them to a decent format. With most of them, you can take a screen shot that creates what I assume will be a .bmp on the Clipboard. This could then be imported as a background with some of the free map generating programs available on the web and overlain with a…

Hello again folks. I'm designing a character for a campaign in Hero Central. It's a Fantasy setting and I would like my character, who is a warrior of extaordinary abilities to be able to tell what an opponent is going to do next. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to simulate this. Now I know that analyze style, or being able to read body languge might be able to simulate this in a mundane way, but i was looking for a more mystical solution. Something like a very limited mind control, only versus opponent, and only to read thier next action. Any ideas? Or have I answered my own question?!!!??! Ta much!

I've been tinkering with a revised weapons and armour list for a tentative Lord of the Rings game. My aims: * Incorporate piercing points into the weapons list itself. * Create a couple of other stat entries for weapons. * Balance weapons, so that none is better at everything. * If possible, give every weapon something that it CAN be best at - but something else it fails to do well at all. I know the arguments for and against a balanced weapons chart, I've read that thread. I think a balanced (at least semi-balanced) chart is good, and so I'm going for it. I'm not wanting to open that argument again. Anyway, I haven't finished it yet, just wondering i…

I am trying to incorporate the idea of Spell Skills (FH, pg. 240) to coincide with my D&D approach to spell-casting (characters learn the spells as 'skills', and can cast them if they have them), but I don't understand a few things: 1) When designing a spell using this option, do you determine it's END cost to cast as if it were any other power? 2) How do you succeed with a Spell Skill roll? Say I have a 'Fireball' spell, it costs 60 Active Points. Normally I'd have a Magic Roll Penalty of -6 to cast this Spell. Is this ignored? Do I just roll my Fireball Skill 13- on 3d6, and if I roll 13 or less I succeed? 3) Is there any way (perhaps a new modifi…

For those of you with experience or interest in the Turakian Age setting, I have a question about a potential character. I am going to be GM'ing a TA game soon and one of my players want to play a rogue/thief type, and she wants that character to be an elf. She has played a similar type of character in D&D (and AD&D et al) for years. My question is about how appropriate do you think this would be for an Ambrethelan Elf? From what I can gleam about the Elves of the Turakian Age, I am not sure how one would get motivated to get into these types of pursuits. So how does an Elf grow up into a thief? And, lastly, which of the Twelve Clans would she belong to?…

These are spells from the anime series, The Slayers, starring the genius Sorceress Supreme Lina Inverse and her dim-witted companion Gourry Gabriev. I am really fond of this series, so I thought I'd try to create some of the spells seen in the series. EXPLOSION ARRAY Effect: Energy Blast 6d6 Target/Area Affected: 2†radius Casting Time: Half Phase (Attack Action) Casting Procedures: Incantations Duration: Instant Range: 350†Magic Roll Penalty: -1 END Cost: 3 Description: With the caster at the center, this spell can blast anything upwards within a circular range of the ground, including dirt, rocks, or anyone inside. Since this spell's effec…

RPG.net has a review of the original FH Grimoire and points out a flaw, which seems valid: "Since Hero System uses a 3d6 system and defines Skill levels as Competent (11-), one of the best in the World (18-); and one of the best of all time (20-), then one of the best wizards of all time is going to have sod-all chance of casting a spell with a skill penalty of -18. A 3 always works, so he's going to have slightly less then a 1-in-200 chance of it working - the same as someone with mere familiarity (8-) with Magic. Oh, mighty mage indeed. Best buy the "Master's Version", then it always works. Alternatively, buy enough points in Magic skill to become a demigod of magi…

I found myself standing by the joining of three roads, beneath a huge, gnarled, leafless oak. To the west of me the sun was on the horizon, a livid red, a hue I had never perceived before or since. To the east of me, night reigned. Stars shone, cold specks of light, like crushed ice; the Aurora snaked over the sky, wispering and kackling to itself in the voices of the dead. On the third path, the road between - the twilight path - I noticed an old man walking towards me, bent as a wind-twisted birch, using a cane to steady his steps. Standing there, looking at him, I suddenly realised he was here to see me. 'Ho there, youngster,' the old bent man said as he came…

Hi all, Thought I'd ask here of those who know the system best. I've played Champs before (its been a few years now, haven't touched it in about 6 or 7 years) and am currently putting together a fantasy campaign. Its cinematic, the magic framework I have in mind is inspired by Shadowrun (hermetic, spiritual, with elements and spirits), and I'd like to be able to plug in elements of Exalted (stunts, charms). The big question: Can Fantasy Hero fit the bill?

Hello all I could do with some suggestions. We are 13 (or is it 14??) sessions into my current Fantasy Hero game and the characters are doing well have a nice history and have all actually survived so far. Its set on an Island (see posts below) http://central.rpg.net.nz/cgi-bin/cutecast/cutecast.pl?session=QxWqCjLPAdovFPSREk7dwiZfPy&forum=12&thread=835 with the one main city and I am finding it hard to set a new fresh approach for 2005. Have thought of the PC's chasing (by sea) the main Villian whom they love to hate (and would love to kill, roast and eat I suspect) but any thoughts?

One of my favourite characters from one of my favourite firstperson computer roleplaying games. The original firstperson-sneaker Thief (and its sequels - the latest can be seen here http://www.thief3.com/ ). He lives in a dark fantasy steampunk world. An individual caught between the forces of order, religion, technology and chaos. A professional thief with good stealth and mobility skills with a number of magical and technological gadgets, including arrows, grenades, mines and a sap capable of knocking out any living being if he catches them by surprise from behind.

Value of Coins In my games a gold peice is worth 25 silver peices which is worth 25 copper pennies which can be further broken down into 2 ha'pennies. I like the idea that a pouch of mixed silver and copper is a real find and gold is really only used by nobles / merchants, inter city transactions. Having said that I can only find one system (Chiverly and Sourcery) that has a decent equipment and services list to reflect this type of monetary system. Has any one got excel / word files with some thing similar or a base list I can re do to match my currency. Also what are the thoughts on PC's being able to buy magic items / services ? Any thogu…

Here's a package for Clerics in my Might&Magic-based campaign. The idea is to keep it very close in power to what a beginning character in Might & Magic 6 would get. Characters would be 50/50. I'm also flavoring it with some various options for special orgs that I want (i.e. Justinian Monks are monastery monks who raise crops, such as wine; Molenites are like the Jesuits; Loganites are Healers (nuns and monks) ). Thoughts/tweaks? And yes, the "Good Shepherd's Cult" is the renamed Cult of Baa. Cleric Package Cost Ability 8 8 points worth of Magic 4 Mana Pool: Endurance Reserve (20 END, 2 REC) Perks 2 Fringe Benefit: Local Priest 1 Fringe B…

I'm creating a Star Wars-like fantasy campaign, and my "Death Star" is a titanic metal golem made of orichalchum. It stands over 50m tall and is nearly indestructable against most standard magical spells as well as conventional troop scale and siege weaponry. It shoots a super-powerful blast from it's eyes or chest. As I put in my intro... Once upon a time, in land, far, far away, a great adventure took place. It is a time of darkness throughout the land. Rebel spies from the Kingdom of Aldaran, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Empire. During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Emperor of Evilâ…

Now that Valdorian Age is soon to come out, I was wondering if anyone has ever written up Red Sonja in Hero system. I've seen Conan and Belit write-ups, but not one of the She-Devil with a Sword. Since Conan is arguably the only man that could probably take her in a fair fight, how would you replicate her fighting ability? High Dex and maybe a 4-5 SPD? I was contemplating that maybe she has some levels that only work when she's fighting a man. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking of including a Shadow dragon (found in D&D) in my next FH campaign. This dragon's breath weapon bestows 2d4 negative energy levels on those unlucky enough to be caught in its path. Now, when suffer level drain in D&D, you lose a Hit Dice, lose access to quite a few spells and take a -1 penalty to pretty much all of your d20 rolls. I was thinking of doing this with Drain BODY and Drain Power -- where it always drained the character power with the most Active Points. I don't really know if this is possible, I'm just making guesses from Sidekick. Does anyone have an better ideas?

Does Hero (or any players) have any stats for the old D&D Brain Mole, Cerebral Parasite, Intellect Devourer, Mind Flayer, and Thought Eater? I could stat them out myself, using the Psionic template from MMM, but I was looking to save time if someone had already done so and was willing to share.

How does one go about designing a limitation such that a power can only be used if the user feeds it blood? Would it be a HKA self only linked to the power? Or a limited power of "only if takes body damage"? Many of the spells in the Grimoire use expendable foci - so it should be in a similar vein I've had a look through Fantasy Hero and the rulebook, but could have missed it - it may have been a sidebar example. If so, could someone point me at it?

Hero has benchmarks for Characteristics and skills, but what about combat levels? How about a combat benchmark chart? I'm looking to make a swordsman who is one of the greatest in my world (at least he hasn't lost a fight yet). How many CSL would that be? He's got a DEX 20 and Martial Arts: Swordfighting, so we're looking at a max. OCV/DCV of 9. Pretty damn good, but not "one of the best in the world" material.

...but have been playing Champions for 20 years. I know the system backwards and forwards. However, I've never played in a fantasy campaign before. Any suggestions? Wait, before you answer that let me tell you what I did for my character... My strategy was to think of him as an RQ character. That is to say, few skills to start, but loads of potential. I got him high stats (20 STR, 18 Dex, CON, PRE, and INT) as well as Linguist and Scholar. The idea is that he is a diamond in the rough. He's not highly educated, but he has enormous physical and mental talents. I didn't purchase any wealth or resistant defenses (i.e., Combat Luck) as I figured I'd pick up all …

Hey, y'all! Inspired by James Gillen's [edit misspelling - sorry!] Turakian Age campaign I thought I would post my own FH campaign notes here, for the cheap amusement of the masses. The game's been going on for a few weeks now, and it seems to be going well. It takes place in my own fantasy world (see the "FH Mythologies - Storytime" thread http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18634 for a little info on one aspect of my world). The concept is this: The Royal Explorers' Society has commissioned one of its members to assemble an expedition to sail south and map the Black Blood River, a very large river (think: the Amazon or the Nile) which has never b…

Traditional sayings, like superstitions (thread http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24114 ) really help flesh out an imaginary world, giving it culture and history. I'll list some actual sayings in use today in various cultures around our world. If anyone has any others, please add them. Russian Sayings A bird may be known by its flight. A drowing man clutches at straw. A fly will not come into a closed mouth. A kind word is like a spring day. A man is judged by his deeds, not by his words. A wolf won't eat wolf. After a storm fair weather, after sorrow joy. All are not cooks that walk with long knives. All cats are grey at night.…
