Tales of the RedShirt

Well, I have no officially inserted a minor throwaway NPC who attracted FAR too much attention in the game. So here is his journal. I figure he deserves it. (Notes: the Hermit and the Three Knights are PCs. Sir Scott is actually a woman) I, Magnus Rex Redshirt, looked death in the eye today. I think I shall have nightmares of this day for the rest of my life. It began in Holm, my home, where my father (Mayor Redshirt) welcomed the wandering knight Sir Scott (of the Order of the Sword) to our village, and begged his help. We were almost cut off from trade, for all travellers along the woodland path had disappeared - we had sent for help every which way. Sir …

The use of desolid

I am currently in a fantasy campaign setting. Where a player took the talent evasive, modified it and changed the name to Evasion. He basically bought Desolid only protection against attcks and it requires a dex roll. The only differences are it does cost endurance and he does not have to abort to a dodge to use it. He said his character is very adept at knowing where an attck is coming from so he bought this power for that reason. Should this be allowed? Also, should he have to make it perminant so he has to use it every attck? Please give any thoughts on this matter. thanks

A friend of mine recently expressed concern with both the power and effeciency of magic in a Fantasy Hero game. Giving it some thought, I could see his point--in creating a magic system, the GM must make sure that magic is neither uselessly weak nor overwhelmingly powerful, and also that the cost is proportional to its usefulness. My first instinct is to use the standard Hero rules and make magic a multipower, which should ensure a reasonable point balance. That's what the core rules are for, after all. On the other hand, this would really limit versatility: a magic user might end up with only a handfull of spells, as opposed to the dozens that occur in literature an…

Even in a world where magic is an everyday occurance and monsters really do lurk in the dark, people will have superstitions -- things they believe that (probably) aren't really true, and only make sense in the context of the culture/history. What superstitions do people have in your fantasy games? I've got about a jillion of them in my fantasy world. Many of them, my players came up with and I decided to adopt. For example: An Elf will never sleep on the ground, for to do so is to invite death. Likewise, they will never wear white unless in mourning for a loved one, because that's the color of death. People from the Empire of Kidbod will never board a ship afte…

I've been toying with the idea of having a hand-picked group of the king's best explorer types set out with the intentions of taming the wilds in his newly acquired lands... This would make a campaign in itself, but it wouldn't be very appealing to the mysterious-stranger type of characters that so many want to play. It would emphasize the heck out of that AK: 'Homeland' and there will be a lot of justification for following up on some of that local lore... but then new threats could arise from diverse places and such. Does anyone have any experience with a 'Homebody' kind of campaign or will it run low on interest quickly by just having the players hang out wa…

I've recently begun work on creating/codifying my FH game into an actual campaign. I'm moving from loosely related episodes in a generic setting into an actual homegrown campaign setting. I've been creating lots of notes etc. Now comes the hard part. How do I organise everything? I've got a couple different ideas. The current of which is: Introduction Birth of the World (History) Characters --Races (with references to locations etc, including map page refs) --Archetypes and their relation to races --Magic The Campaign World --Economy (equipment, items, money) --Maps ----Kingdoms ------Race relations (aka Who Hates Whom) ------…

I was starting this primarily as a discussion of how one would create a "Rope of Climbing" as there could be many, many different ways of doing it I would welcome input. And as I am bringing it up, any other general discussion with magic item creation would be welcome as well (I never know what I may need to ask!). Anyway, about the rope, here's what I have found/heard: 1) Buy as TK to lift person(s) using the rope or hold rope in place 2) Buy as a massive bonus to the Climbing skill 3) Buy as clinging only when touching the rope 4) Flight, only usable on a surface and only when use rope to climb Any other ideas? I'm not sure which one I like the best.…

I am working on a campaign in which the main player race are Sidhe-like elves. As such, Iron, or True-Iron is a very special and dangerous metal. It is not only bane to the Elves, but also to magic itself. Now, in most cases, how to handle this is clear... the elves have suitable disads based around Iron and I am thinking that a lot of spells will have a -1/4 limitation "Not versus Iron" (like forcefileds and things can be cut by iron, but a wall of real stone couldn't). But that made me think about items fashioned from Iron itself. Obviously I will control the amount of iron that makes it into the game and into PC hands (the few humans and dwarves around…

Hello, I'm filling up the corners for a fighter NPC with mastery of the element Earth and I am having some troubles with a couple of powers. First, I want something like draconic tremorsense from D&D. That is, the character can sense and target creatures who are touching the ground. This is probably limited in radius somehow. Here's how I'm doing this now: Ground Beneath Your Feet: Spatial Awareness (Unusual Group), Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degrees) (27 AP); Costs END (-1/2), Only When In Contact With The Ground (-1/4) Second, I want the character to be able to sink into the earth. Effects: the character's location is nigh-undetectable; the…

Digital Hero subscribers interested in playtesting The Valdorian Age can find the manuscript in the usual place. If you have any questions or comments, please post 'em in the "Company Questions" thread of the same title.

Here is another encounter from my game for your entertainment (and for anyone to shamelessly steal if they're so inclined). It was not intended to be nearly as humorous as it ended up being. ------------------------------ As the sun set, the group began traveling toward Mintopua. Traveling at night was difficult for Radka, but the two elves were able to guide her along. She generally preferred traveling in the daytime, but the Marks of Chaos they had been afflicted with ensured that the locals would attack them on sight (as would most civilized beings in the Old World). But this trip could change all that. If they succeeded in recovering the Book of…

If anyone is interested, I'm submitting my rough outline for my Fantasy Hero (ala. Space Opera) campaign. Much thanks to Archer on this one. What I really need are the groups' ideas, suggestions, and comments. Thanks! Now, here it is: Once upon a time, in land, far, far away, a great adventure took place… It is a time of darkness throughout the land. Rebel spies from the Kingdom of Aldaran, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Empire. During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Emperor of Evil’s ultimate weapon, the Death Golem, a massive construct, capable of de…

First Wave was one of my favorite shows on the TV (it ranked third on my favorite shows after Highlander and Babylon 5). Has anyone tried to write up the Gua? They are strong physically, but react to salt as if it was a narcotic, and dissolve when they die. They can also survive disembodied (albeit kept in a container) until they find a "husk" (ie human body).

I have a dirty little secret: I'm a big fan of Phil Foglio, even in his more pervy moments. I recalled reading his fantasy erotic comic XXXenophile and seeing one particularly gameable but tricky idea (I will leave out the more explicit details for obvious reasons ). Basically it involved a potion that had two effects, which happened in succession. First off, the person it is administered to becomes utterly crazed with lust until they have intercourse or the equvalent with the person who adminsited the potion. After that, they become completely bonded to them. A nasty potion to have administered on you by an enemy, and even worse to have accidentally adminsietred on…

Greeting HEROdom, please I need your help. I need to locate Ambience Music??? Links are good, but please be specific as I am still unlearned on how to find and download stuff. Jungle sounds day & night - disturbing and alien to northerners (Think Tarzan, Land of the Lost, etc...) and (Animal roars, screams, etc...) Tribal war drums - the natives are restless (Again, think Tarzan, Land of the Lost, etc...) Waterfall - Niagra level with jungle background (A cliffhanger for real) Aztec/Maya/Toltec "Tribal Chants†or African "Tribal Chants†or Meso-amerindian "Tribal Chants†Please and thank you QM

I noticed in Fantasy Hero Grimoire I, several spells had a -1/2 limitation called "Spell". This was not in every write up, but in many I looked at. I was wondering if anyone knew: 1) what did it signify? 2) why some spells had it and others didn't (for instance, it wasn't universal within a school)?

Good, you guys seem like a good bunch of people to use to bounce Ideas off of. I have givin my guys a full reign in my world, like, if they want to create races and such I can work them in. Here is basically the world I have created so far and want to see if you guys have any ideas, or see things that seem inconsistent. In the beginning of this land the dwarves were basically your normal nomadic tribe, moving around and hunting for food. Finally they found a place to settle down and created a rather nice kingdom. Only problem is that the land at the time had many issues as far as getting water to the mass. So a dwarven mage decided to try to use the magics that h…

While sifting through the threads in the Old Forum Archives, I came upon a post by our fellow member, the erudite Xandarr, in which he mentioned that he'd done extensive conversions of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game into HERO System Fifth Edition, and offered to email the files to anyone who wanted them. (Those boards didn't offer the option of posting attachments.) Intrigued, I contacted Xandarr to ask if he still had those files and would be willing to send them to me. I also inquired as to whether he'd mind me making them accessible to the rest of our community. Xandarr was gracious enough to agree to all of the above. I'm posting Xandarr's files in t…
