(although Forever War is actually mid-70's) It seems to me the bar was set a bit higher for SF books than it was for movies/tv shows, but that's not surprising -- there've been a lot more of the former. Currently, military SF is a thriving sub-genre, (mainly thanks to Baen Books, who now count David Drake as one of their authors) at least in part due to the success of Hammer's Slammers.
