Re: A Thread for Random Videos

I was recently directed to a wonderful little short story, Henry Slesar's "Examination Day." (Read it online here.) Originally published in Playboy in 1958, it was eventually turned into an episode for the 1985 revival of The Twilight Zone.

Here's the TZ episode.

We don't need the government to selectively breed us for stupidity. We manage that quite well on our own. :doi:

No, that wasn't nearly enough liquid nitrogen to freeze a pool. No doubt, it is cold, really really cold, but I think people over estimate its effects. It takes awhile for it to overcome the temp difference between it an what ever else it is touching and thus freeze it. All the while it is rapidly warming and dissipating.

Well, yes, if you dropped a milliliter of liquid nitrogen on someone's hand, the effects likely wouldn't be too dire. But if you plunged them into a tankful of it, you'd wind up with a corpsicle.

Of course that depends on how long you keep them in it. I present the Leidenfrost effect:

Heck, dropping a 12 oz ladle of the stuff over your exposed hand won't hurt unless you pour it slowly. The time requirements for even liquid nitrogen to freeze US cash seem long given how cold it actually is. But the Hollywood sensationalism about its effects (or rather the speed there of) is a bit out there.
