Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

My mom wanted to do a movie night, and I just got home from it. The movie she wanted to see was Argo, and with some initial trepidation (largely due to the R rating which I tend to avoid these days) I went along.

Argo is a suspense film set during the Iranian hostage crisis of 1980. Six American diplomats had gotten off the embassy compound and were hiding out in the residence of the Canadian Ambassador. Argo is the story of an audacious and unlikely intelligence operation to bring them home, led by a maverick "exfiltration" specialist, by smuggling them out of the country disguised as a Canadian location scouting crew for a movie.

Suspense is the operative word. The last twenty minutes are about as much tension as I've experienced at the movies in a very long time. I was literally shaking near the end.

The most unlikely thing about the movie is that it's based on the actual rescue operation, the accounts of which were declassified seventeen years after the fact. At the time the Canadians got all the credit for the rescue (and took all the Iranian retribution).

[And the rating? It's for language. People, especially the Hollywood types played by John Goodman and Alan Arkin, drop F-bombs like there's no tomorrow -- one particular context for which becoming a running gag throughout the Hollywood sections of the movie.]

The Hollow Crown.

This is a series of four Shakespeare plays filmed for Television being Richard II, Henry IV parts 1 and 2 amd Henry V.

Richard II has Ben Allershaw and Rory Kinnear playing Richard and Henry and they are both in Skyfall playing Q and Tanner respectively.

Henry IV part 1 has Jeremy Irons playing the King with Tom Hiddleston playing Prince Hal. Alun Armstrong and his son play Northumberland and Hotspur respectively.

Henry IV part 2 deals with Henry's decline and death with Hal taking the throne during which he forsakes Falstaff

Henry V sees the action go into France but omits certain details like the traitors scene and Pistol's last speech.

It is very good but I would say that you have to like Shakespeare.

There's a Kickstarter for a documentary that claims to tell the true story behind this. It evidently involves Jack Kirby.

The Man with the Iron Fists.

I can't say it was good. It was very schlocky. And cheesy. And gore splattered. Parts of it came off like bad fan-fiction. The only reason I saw it was a friend of mine put the call out to go see a movie together as a group, and I had a gift card collecting dust. I think it would be greatly improved by a pair of beers.

Which we had after the movie, when the lot of us tried out an english-style pub we had heard about.

Mmmm... Shepherd's Pie....

(But the foodie threads are over there...)
