  1. Re: Magic pistols As the GM, its up to you, but if he wants fire and ice and its brought about by magic, then that can be acceptable too. Is there a difference between Mr. Freeze's ice gun and Iceman's mutant ice powers? So why should there be a difference if the character is able to summon ice bullets, unless of course you want there to be one. My two cents would be that there isn't one. (But that's just me).
  2. Re: Weird Adventures -- A Different Kind of Pulp Setting KawangaKid, I've seen some old DnD modules where they did such a thing. I think it was the Blackmoor modules that had the heroes search an old crashed space ship. There was laser guns, which the pcs think is a magic wand. There was a cyborg, and genetic experiments which resulted in killer frogs and man-frog people.
  3. Re: MMA-styled martial arts locks and grappling How did you build it? Remember the mechanics can be the same, but you define the speical effects. So you could buy a martial grab and define it as a leg lock or an armbar. And a major point too, if you define it as armbar, its not one specific armbar, a bunch of different types, they just take the same mechanics. Now most people buy etra limbs-legs with limited manipulation, so that you can leg lock someone with your own legs, and still punch with your arms no penalty. Again, depending on how the manuever is defined, (as myself) it may not be nessecery, but it does eliminate possible debates.
  4. Re: Silver Age/1950s Style Villains For Power suit how about the Iron Cross? For a German villian. Also check out the public domain super hero site. I could provided ideas to use.
  5. Re: Beware of late night commercials..... Well for starters, I think that the fighters would have distinctive costumes, not no-shirted as in the UFC. And second, there would be alot of jumping techniques. And perhaps some ki techniques would be more common place?
  6. Re: Silver Age/1950s Style Villains I just thought of another sterotypical villian. A Chinese Martial Artist and or magician. Named of courst the Dragon! The theme of the villian group would be to destroy the United States.
  7. Re: Silver Age/1950s Style Villains Well about a Russian/Communist themed villian? The Red Guard he could be super soldier type villian.
  8. Re: Hero system basic book question Two glitches I came across with HS basic so far. 1) it mentions that restrainable is not available, which is fine. But I found two examples which have that limitation listed. The wings example isn't too bad because in parenthesises it tells you what the limitation does. For cyberpunk it doesn't. 2) The rules state that you can put an advantage on hand attack, but no where does it tell you if you need to buy extra advantage on str. And what the question is though, as of hsbr if you buy an advantage, then you must you the advantage all the time. Btw I got an official ruling for this. http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php/88746-Hand-attacks-Strength-and-advantages
  9. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? Well a twist on your all at a bar, could be your all in the jail house (for various reasons) and the Mayor/Prince has an offer you can't refuse. Or if you needed persuaded, there is a fight (ps's don't have to even be there) and being strangers/foreigners are automatically accussed and "asked" to do communtiy service.
  10. Re: Low-End/Less Flashy Superpowers suggestions needed... fbdaury- I remember the X-files had alot of what could be considered low level supers. Even the mystical could be really also low-level super for this game. It might be worth checking out.
  11. Re: Low-End/Less Flashy Superpowers suggestions needed... I was thinking about a fighting 'savant'. Where he knows intuitivly where and how to strike/grapple/other manuever and with the precognition, knows what you are going to throw before you knew it yourself.
  12. Re: Beware of late night commercials..... Were you thinking of a style or game or both? When you think of anime, what are you thinking of? sounds like a good brain exercise anyways.
  13. Re: Low-End/Less Flashy Superpowers suggestions needed... Wasn't there a tv show where the guy could temporaliy boost his hearing and other abilities one at a time and only shortly? I think the name is the sentinal? How about a low level doppleganger?
  14. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? If you are setting the adventure in the sewers, perhaps you might want to think of using lizard men as either extra monsters, or maybe a third party. I have an idea of why the party wants to go down in the sewers. Perhaps the rats have stolen a church relic, which is shinny. None of the other people are brave enough to go down there. Mind you the relic doesn't have to be magical at all. We know that rats like shinny stuff, that''s why they took it. The local prince won't risk his men in the sewers. Perhaps one or more in the party would like to offer to go for this noble deed, or maybe they just want to get paid. I fjyou have lizard men, that could explain why there are traps down there. And if the party isn't doing well, then you could have them in the background, i.e traces of them and traps but no physical confrontation. Or perhaps the lizards want the shinny object too. One room, or tunnel, could be slippery and a failed rolled means somebody is going for a swim. (I gotta say for some reason this idea has me churning out ideas left and right-hope you don't mind)
  15. Re: Low-End/Less Flashy Superpowers suggestions needed... I just read the story of the Variable Man from Philip K. Dick. The hero is brought to the future accidently. His "power", as he was a fixit man, could build or repair anything. His genius was in his hands. He didn't understand the technical stuff, he just knew. Also he fixed things as they should be. I.e. he fixed a kids broken vidsender that should only work a couple of blocks, and it reached a space ship.
  16. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? Zeropoint, funny that you mentioned Giant Rats because (after my initial post with you) I was working on a one-shot for my brother and I too am going to use Giant Rats. I'm not sure if to use them as independants or I was thinking of using them more as guard dogs and having a goblin as a handler. And I also considered having the evil elf maybe transform into one. DnD (at one time) had wererats as monsters.
  17. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? I've used that to my advantage once. the skeleton stirred alittle, and after the characters reacted, it turned out to be a rat in the bones. Priceless!
  18. Re: What "Pulp" have you read lately ? Doe Philip K. Dick count? Just the the Variable Man. I'm finally reading some of his short stories. Thank you Android and Kindle free books!
  19. Re: What "Pulp" have you read lately ? I'm looking forward to see John Carter myself. I can't believe that there isn't more of a buzz on the pulp boards.
  20. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? I know Dnd gets made fun of this. But when I re-read works from Edgar Rice Burroughs (The Gods of Mars) and Robert E. Howard (The Hour of the Dragon), they have dungeons, galleries, pits, and the such with no discernable reasons, until the plot needs one. So for logic, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Heck in real life, some of the ancient buildings, we only have an educated guess to the exact nature of the building/room functions. Now if your using castles (Medieval), then maybe you would want to have a little more logic to it. I would start with maybe 8 rooms. At least one having a puzzle or trap of some sort. And for monsters, have some baseline or weaker monsters and some stronger ones statted out. So if one room, they blow through the monsters, then the next you can have them stronger or vise versa. One idea I had (and feel free to use it), was to have the PC investigate a ruined tower. (Its a possible hideout for outlaws) and upon discovery, they find that there is a tunnel in the dungeon of the tower which leads to subterrean caves. (The outlaws may have been killed, or join forces, or a third party). Perhaps the tower collapses and now the heros must search for a way out?
  21. Re: Video Game Martial Arts (Coments Welcomed) Got to say, I liked some of the manuever names too. I was alsways going to do a Mortal Kombat game, alas I never did. Oh and one idea I've used for tournament fighters, is buying additional csl with the limitation only in tournament fights. As for the complication, I can't quite remember if a character takes a Vulnerabilty or psy lim, but can define the character takes either a -2 to OCV or DCV or both vs a specific style, or you can go broader suchs as linear styles vs circular styles. So you could do this 2D vs 3d. My other point about 2d vs 3d up thread was that even though those characters were limited(2D) that was because of technology, not the fighter per se. But as I was writing this, I remember the movie Zorro (Antonio Banderas) and the training sequence and learning to fight in the round, which I believed is mention under fencing-spanish school in the hero system martial arts book. And Olympic fencing is a straight line. I don't know quite how to rationlize it in game but in a sense that is what the comparison is between 2D and 3D could be.
  22. I have 6th Basic. I am wondering though. If I by an advantage for hand attack, say auto fire. Do I: a) Assume any strength that I use with the hand attack is automatically covered. (I don't have to buy any advantage on my strength.) Also buy autofire for my strength, and just ignore the rule that any power that has an advantage, you must always use the advantage. Thanks for responding, and I enjoy the book!
  23. Re: Support HERO Indirectly... I see this. I coming from, I buy Hero Basic, there is no (ready) support. I get discourged and never buy a Hero book again. And worse, tell people not to buy it.
  24. Re: Video Game Martial Arts (Coments Welcomed) I see what your getting at with the 2D characters. This though is a translation issue. Yes in game, 2D maybe don't have the ability, but in Hero terms, everyone can, and you might have some complaints about it. I can see limiting who can buy martial dodge. I.e, allowing 3d to buy it but not 2d.
