  1. Re: AoE HTH attacks and Blocking But Blocking it would make the attack essentially never happen, and completely negate the fact that the attack (logically) should still be able to hit the other targets who did not/could not block in the area of effect. Is the issue that you can't Block it (and thus prevent the giant from attacking anyone with the AoE), or that you can't take shelter behind the shield? Hm, what about the shield carrier interposing himself and his shield between the giant's fist and a cowering child.... How do the Interpose rules work with AoE? I'll have to review that......
  2. Re: Time Hero Fantasy character went back two weeks (by accident), but I was out in the middle of nowhere so it didn't really make a difference. Just returned to the city a little sooner than expected.
  3. Re: Creepy Pics. I'm not gonna click on that, but thanks anyway....
  4. Re: Order of the Stick Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I'd say the plan is to sabotage Nale's efforts at interference at an opportune moment. After all, what better way to ensure Nale's team fails than to join it so that you can be there when the moment is right?
  5. Re: Order of the Stick When trains fight.... the audience wins.... if it's far enough away.
  6. Re: Creating your undead horde, one corpse at a time That's a respectable amount of prep for Date Night....
  7. Re: Creating your undead horde, one corpse at a time .....so many jokes.... can't....decide..... WHICH ONES TO USE!!!!
  8. Re: Sign Language Theoretically, couldn't they communicate in the dark still, as long as they felt the signs being used, and took turns? It would not be nearly as efficient, but it's better than I could do if I was in complete darkness and couldn't speak....
  9. Re: Balancing social skills and role playing Objective: To gain access to the king so that the heroes may knock the mentally dominating crown from his head, thus restoring him to his wits and offering hope to the land. Scenario 1: Pure social interaction, reduced (SEVERELY reduced) to a mere 6 rolls- the first to get past the guards at the gate, the second to get past the captain of the watch in the inner courtyard, the third to get past the seneschal just inside the atrium once inside the palace, the fourth to get past a suspicious prince, the fifth to get past the master of spies/chief aide of the king, and the sixth to get past the king's champion, who begrudgingly allows you access to the king's inner sanctum to present him with your evidence of a dire plot against the kingdom. Scenario 2: PCs ignore the peaceful option, and decide to fight their way into the palace. Four rolls, two dead gate guards later..... how much closer are they to the king? I would posit that the +2 would be far more useful over the course of Scenario 1 than the four rolls of Scenario 2. Thus, context is important when determining the relative importance of specific rolls.... and again, more rolls over time seem to trump fewer rolls in a short period of time (Which would you rather have: a +1 one time bonus, or a +1 Overall Skill level you can use again and again and again?).
  10. Re: Balancing social skills and role playing Yes. Which means that the Face character with the 12-15- will consistently have better odds of success, since they start from a higher percentage of success and then will almost always have multiple bonuses that equal or surpass the rare, intermittent, legendary +3 to the 8- guy.
  11. Re: Creepy Pics. See, I thought it was Count Chocula with the termite from those Terminex (sp?) commercials.....
  12. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... You're starting a SECOND Rogue Trader game???!??!?
  13. Re: Balancing social skills and role playing See, I do not see the issue the way Hugh does. A singular bonus for the glib player of +1-3 (whose character has an 8-) is far outweighed by the Face character's 12-15- roll, with multiple complimentary skills for bonuses, for direct skill bonuses purchased for the character, for situational bonuses that their particular build allows them access to, etc. It is outweighed in any given roll and even more so when you look at it over time. Hm. Question. Let's say we have an entire party, none of whom has any significant social skills. Heck, let's say that for some reason they don't even have Everyman social skills. They want to persuade the local magistrate of something- to let them off with a warning, to send a letter to the local baron saying that something needs additional investigation, whatever. They want something from him. How would you (any of you), resolve this as a GM, versus the group that does have the appropriate social Skills/abilities? Is the difference going to be that, for the non-social party (no pun intended), the magistrate will make them do him a favor (sidequest) in return, whereas the Social Party has the option of skipping that (if they wish) if they do well in their social interaction efforts?
  14. Re: When I Am the Benevolent Ruler.... The alcohol will do that....
  15. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Yeah, he was using technically accurate yet not at all typical terms, specifically those most Cthullu-esque, to build the humor.
  16. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... I'm sorry if you're being tongue in cheek and I missed it, but just n case the question is in earnest... He is talking about Jesus.
  17. Re: Gaming in the Magic: The Gathering setting For me, and perhaps I'm in the minority (of one?), what I like about the idea is that multiple campaigns could represent a single contest between two high level planeswalkers.
  18. Re: Gaming in the Magic: The Gathering setting And that's why I've always interpreted the Planeswalkers as being incredibly powerful, and the lands they "tap" are places in various planes that they control and therefore can draw upon for power/weapons/allies.
  19. Re: Gaming in the Magic: The Gathering setting Well, I would think the Planeswalkers are pretty Epic in their power level, though I haven't even tried to follow the Magic "story" at all. So, I'd suggest a group that (whether it knows it or not) consist of agents of one Planeswalker being used against another.
  20. Re: Balancing social skills and role playing Similar to Christopher's suggestion, but different: Passed upon how well they do on the Tactics roll, you tell them what would be (in your mind as the GM, who knows what defenses/guards are where) the best approach to a situation, where dangers are likely, etc. If they know the opponents' tactical prowess and do quite well on the roll, you give them increasingly accurate information about where things definitely WILL be.
  21. Re: Killiing a lot of zombies from a safe position. For me, the fun of a zombies campaign would be in the engineering aspect of it, of practically confronting the problem and coming up with solutions. Case in point: Sniping a bunch of zombies. Take the time to lay your groundwork, prepare. Find a good area. Either a really secure place that you can hunker down in for a week or so after you kill a couple hundred of zombies... or secure the lower floors of a three or four story building, and the same for the buildings adjacent to it. Build bridges connecting the roofs of those buildings (bonus points if you can easily raise or lower them), and after you take your shots calmly exit the area by traveling across roof tops to you safe zone.
  22. Re: Balancing social skills and role playing Huh. Very interesting. I'll have to mull that over....
  23. Re: Evil PCs QFT. An evil group might be internally kind and loyal to its members. They could genuinely care about and even love one another; they may sacrifice themselves for one another. They might also be a family of murderous cannibals. So, still very Evil.
  24. Re: Disaster Rules? Constitution and Disease. If you think about it, most of us are walking around every day with big bonuses to CON rolls to avoid falling sick, etc. With a major disaster, sanitation breaks down, and access to even basic medical/cleaning supplies can be a pressing issue. So, something you might ignore might become a major factor in the game: Avoiding injury/disease.
