archermoo
Re: The cranky thread The reading level of a newspaper varies greatly. My friend the journalist writes for a fourth grade level' date=' there in the capital region of NY. She's always delighted when she slips a big word (or even better, and ADVERB!) into her articles.[/quote'] A friend of mine used to write for a semi-rural paper in Colorado. He used the word 'detritus' in an article talking about a heavy storm with flooding that just went through, and specifically the damage it left behind. His editor told him that a) he should be writing to a 6th grade level, and he certainly shouldn't use words that his editor didn't know. teh bunneh
Re: The cranky thread Just to clarify: I'm not suggesting that soldiers are stupid. I'm just saying that 8 weeks of Basic isn't going to raise someone's INT from 8 to 12 (or even from 10 to 12).

I'm just saying that 8 weeks of Basic isn't going to raise someone's INT from 8 to 12 (or even from 10 to 12). Yeah, certainly not if everything they read is written to a 4th grade level. Though at least in theory one reason that the average INT of a soldier might be higher than just a random person is that one of the criteria they are selected by is intelligence. Even if the standard isn't at Mensa levels (the high-IQ organization with the lowest entrance criteria), cutting out everyone whose IQ is lower than 90 would have a tendancy to raise the average. But in my experience that isn't the case. While I never served, I've known a number of people who have. Quite a few of them have IQs of 130 or better. No, I was being persnickety about odd forms of sample bias. I've had to recognize and deal with some of those in my work.
tkdguy
Re: The cranky thread I really wanted to have it out with my boss today. MilkmanDan
Re: The cranky thread 2007 sucked. I figured 2008 would be better. So far? There hasn't been a single day where all four members of my family have all been healthy. We've had colds, stomach flu (the only thing better than being woken up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday by a five-year-old vomiting pizza burger all over his carpet, the hall carpet, your carpet, and the bathroom is being woken up at 3:30 a.m. by a three-year-old vomiting all over ther bed), and now I'm reasonably certain somebody summoned a phlegm demon just so it could take a crap in my sinuses. Can somebody tell me why day cares aren't required to have a big biohazard sticker on their front doors? I swear, I'm never going to be healthy again until my kids go to college. So far at least, I haven't had to pack up the wife and kid in the car along with the kid's nebulizer and set off at 5 A.M. in the dark, wind, and rain with no working street or traffic lights, searching for a working power outlet before the kid's own bronchial tubes asphyxiate him. But, the year is young.
SatinKitty
Re: The cranky thread You know, if that's the case you really ought to invest in an Emergency Generator for your home. My Parent's power goes out a lot so they finally got one. They do not even have a medical power need. Really, get one.
