Roads don't flow.

Same river; different bits of water.

If what makes it up is different, can it actually be said to be the same river? The bed is the same; the banks are the same. But the water is what makes a river, a river.

The water he dipped in the second time was ten feet upstream when he dipped the first time.

Same water; he was touching different bits of it.  Same water, same river.

Two days later?  A philosophy argument  can take place.  For the scenario cartoon depicted?  Same river.  The best argument is different bits of water were fondled the second time.

Famous quotes by Heraclitus

ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμϐαίνουσιν, ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ.- Ever-newer waters flow on those who step into the same rivers. (Fragment 12)

δὶς ἐς τὸν αὐτὸν ποταμὸν οὐκ ἂν ἐμβαίης. - You could not step twice into the same river. As quoted in Plato, Cratylus, 402a

ποταμῷ γὰρ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμβῆναι δὶς τῷ αὐτῷ - You cannot step twice into the same river. Fragment 91. Plutarch, On the EI at Delphi

πάντα χωρεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει - Everything changes and nothing stands still. As quoted by Plato in Cratylus, 402a

Πάντα ῥεῖ - Everything flows.

ὁδὸς ἄνω κάτω μία καὶ ὡυτή - The road up and the road down is one and the same. Fragment 60

(and for my Canadian friend, from an Aussie, paraphrasing Heraclitus: you can’t step (or fall) into the same Venetian road, twice. ;) :P

That's not the philosophy behind the quotation. Heraclitus held that existence is ever-changing over time, always "becoming" but never "being." A river is just the simplest illustration of that concept. And although I could, it wouldn't be worth splitting any more hairs over this.

Oh, no; I am quite familar with the idea.  U merely posit that at the moment of interaction, all things interacting must "be," and that there was not time enough between foot dunking for either od the participants to have experienced anything that would induce change beyond ten feet of movement of water.

Just because he was an ancient toga wearing sort who's thoughts got  recorded doesn't mean he wasn't wrong now and again.
