  2. Re: I need a certain type of catastrophe I remember seeing an episode of NOVA that suggested that if the magnetic field failed, it wouldn't just flip, but create moving localised fields. The effect? Moving bands of aurora boreali, increased radiation zones that moved across the planet like weather fronts. In Rubber Science Earth, the initial shock would fry every IC in the world, and the unstable magnetic field would make attempts to rebuild the tech subject to unpredictable EMP Blackouts.
  3. Re: Hypothetical Axis Amerika 2005 Phillip Roth's most recent book is an "alternative history memoir" called The Plot Against America It imagines a scenario in which Axis Amerika is alive and well...
  4. Re: Freaking out the players I ran a D&D game where I had someone draw all the villains for me. Rather than explain what they were looking at, I'd just show them a picture. It led to them thinking the Troll was dead, when it sat back up in the room and nearly bit off a PC's head, and had them freaking out about a dead creature found in the rubble of a mine collapse, even though it was just a kobold...

  7. Re: Breaking through a force wall of 50PD/ED Hardened First off, I agree with whoever said let the FW work before you let it fail. Nothing annoys players more than the cool thing they have which is utterly useless. Second, if the FW is manipulated by operators at dumb terminals, have the fish men blackmail an operator to drop the wall. It helps if you can foreshadow this: let the players know that someopne on the island is communicating with the fish men, and play a game or two of ferret out the spy.
  8. Re: Angel, the worst original character concept ever? My character in our late 50's Teen Hero Campaign was an obvious ripoff homage to Angel. I did, however, give Johnny Angel a different power base (Precog, Combat and otherwise) origin (Dad was minor precog in Sgt Steele's Suicide Squadron, wings were from stepdad Dr. Daedalus, a Homefront Hero in WWII), and attitude (Less rich boy, more James Dean). I think Angel is a great concept for a comic book, less soi for a game. In a game, he would be most vulnerable, but in fiction, he has the best power in the world...
  9. Re: noob question about END GM's option. Every (3X-1) Damage Class can be resolved as (2X +1/2) or (3X-1). I prefer the half die, others prefer the -1. Would it be blasphemy to suggest a d2 and a d4 for the other DC's?
  10. Re: My Game is Stale Characters at sea are much more vulnerable than on land. If the main villain leaves the island on short notice (on a quest for the McGuffin to end all McGuffins), the characters would have to find a ship and a crew willing to pursue. Once at sea, pirates, mermen, mysterious floating islands, crewmates with mutiny on their mind, and the weather itself provide all the adventure one party can handle...
  11. Re: Psionic-Focused Campaign/Plot Idea/Musing Are you familiar with a phenomenon known as The God Spot? ? I think it would be interesting if the god spot in the brain was designed to accept telepathic communication from a "higher being", and further research showed us how to use it for other psychic phenomenon. The flavor of this campaign would take on a pseudo religious one, as those with powers would be working through the part of the brain that believes in magic, not science...
  12. Re: brainstorming ideas: Cosmic Speedster Human Generator Aid Endurance Reserve, Electric Batteries Only, OAF (magnet and copper wire) Mirror Image Images, Self only (Character moves quickly back and forth from one spot to another, spending only enough time in the second spot to create an illusion of permanence.) Speed Talk Mind Link, usable with other Speedsters who speak a common language, LOS only (Character can speak so fast that most people only hear a high pitched squeal, but other speedsters can understand it normally.) Quick Study +X with all KS, OAF Immobile (Library) (Character can read up on any subject with which he is familiar and digest the information quickly to come to a conclusion.)

    Ion Cannons

Re: Ion Cannons Or you could go with an RKA AVLD (Power Defense), with the limitation, only to trigger Damage Results Table. I can't find my FRED, do they still have that table?
  14. Re: Fantasy Hero Grimoire review discussion I have not run a game with Turakian Magic, but I think the way to use a system in which every spell requires a high skill roll, is to encourage the PC's to improve their odds. Taking extra time, using complementary skills, using the circumstances at hand to your advantage, should all increase your chances of casting successfully. I tend to Feng Shui the pluses and minuses; if it makes the story more interesting, I give generous pluses, and if it feels like powergaming, no soup for you!

    Sayings

Re: Sayings I made up a good one in a game, once.
  16. Re: The Non-Wandering Adventurer I've found an easy way to "tame" wandering adventurers is to provide them with allies in the area, and have them form relationships with them. A place starts feeling like home when they know everyone, and everyone knows them. As an example, I don't like magic supermarkets in my game, but I did have a pawn shop that specialised in adventurer's curios. The owner was being muscled out of business by a loutish prince, and offered them half the business in exchange for their help. The adventurers then had an anchor that drew them back to the town to sell off their curios... These heroes had the ear of the court, and were active participants in the welfare of the kingdom.
  17. Re: what non-fiction books have you read? please rate it ... I am reading a book on the Weimar Republic, two biographies on Christopher Isherwood, and Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Diaries. I have applied to direct Cabaret at my local theater, and I want to be prepared.
  18. Re: Why super tech never goes mainstream In my Superhero game the secret behind supertech is this: People's imagination shapes reality. Thus, in the 50's, radiation created mutant ants, and superpowers. As scientists studied it, they could find no logic behind it, and it stopped happening. Today radiation just gives you cancer. Gadgeteers in my game are either tremendous optimists or mad scientists, who are out on the cutting edge of science, and their expectations shape reality. When the plodding scientists follow behind to check their work, reality conforms to their scientific method. Dr. Destroyer became aware of this phenomenon, which is his secret reason for creating Menton and Mentalla. By controlling the minds of enough people on the planet, he can remake reaity in his image, by forcing the world to accept it...

  20. Re: Background Cliches X) The hero of every tall tale, old work of heroic fiction, and early mythology actually existed. stories about Zorro, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Pecos Bill, and Hercules are essentially historically accurate.
  21. Re: Background Cliches OK, fair enough.
  22. Re: Background Cliches Immediately following this arc, he abandons the costume, calls himself Nomad, and wanders the land like Kane from Kung Fu. How much more anti hero do you want? He never did defect, though.
  23. Re: Background Cliches You missed the 70's, apparently. Not the issues, but the decade, wherein exposes the President of the United States as the United States as Enemy Number one of the USA, and sees him commit suicide... (source )
  24. Re: If you could add one more... If I could add one more... Advantage: Smart Charges, as a modifier to charges. These would represent charges that are not expended unless they hit the target. A lassoo could have 1 smart charge, or a boomerang, or a lock-on missile. Limitation: Reciprocal. a Limitation to Damage Shield, that indicates that damage cannot exceed the damage inflicted by the target triggering the Damage Shield. Skill Enhancer: Assistant. Any skill bought with this enhancer costs 1 point less, but can only be used to assist someone with more skill in the power.
  25. Re: Justice League Avengers, Assemble! The Trickster (Loki + The Joker): Don Blake, ThunderGod Billy Blake's half-brother, was mentally unstable before Billy's transformation, having been put in and out of institutions for his violent behavior. When Don caught Billy turning into Thundergod, his jealousy drove him to a dark place. following in his brother's footsteps, he found the cave where Billy found his hammer. In this cave was no wise man, however but a clown, dressed in a green and yellow zoot suit. The clown handed Don a dagger and said, "Use this dagger in anger, and you will summon all the power you need to thwart your brother and mine." Don immediately did so, stabbing the clown in the chest. On that day, Don trancended sanity, and became a creature composed of chaos. Loki has posessed Don Blake, but is limited by the sheer insanity that the possesion instilled in his host. his machinations and plans for world dominance must share priority with Don's madness, resulting in bizarre, baroque, plots to harm Billy and those close to him...
