Tech reacted to Grailknight in AVAD Life Support question
It's a pretty common power until you add the part about "can't get the years back". Except for a few Warhammer of White Wolf games, I don't recall many games that have damage shot of death than can't be healed.
It's just not in the spirit or mechanics of most games.
" Sorry Mike but you have to retire your character or adventure as a geriatric" is not going to fly far at most gaming tables except as a special quest.

Tech got a reaction from Duke Bushido in Is Teleport a "Mental Power?"
Seems we're at the point where we're trying to decide what 'we' think could be a mental power. This goes back to what I said about the GM having to decide and let the player know.

They offer him the 'promise' of money and being able to push superheroes around.... until reality kicks in.

Tech got a reaction from Ninja-Bear in Running Viper’s Nest
Since you're looking at making Viper a minor threat, I would go with 5 or 6d6 EB. Also, don't give the blasters Autofire. Of course, this depends on the average defense of the characters that will be played.

Tech got a reaction from Khymeria in Is Teleport a "Mental Power?"
The GM and player need to talk over what can be put into the VPP. A limitation was taken so some things aren't going to be allowed in it. As was stated, Teleport is a movement power; the special effects of it are the question. Personally, I would allow TP in the VPP but how much of a limitation was taken is the factor.

Tech got a reaction from Weldun in Quote of the Week from my gaming group...
From this past weekend:
Hero previously flashed can see again: "Hey, I can see again?"
Villain that did it in the first place, "You can see again?"
Hero replies, "Yeah, I can see again... oh..."
Villain hits hero with flash attack again. 😛

I've used him a couple time. Never had him fly, though. Due to an oversight on my part, during combat I forgot he had growth. So, next PHA to remedy that, I say he's grown. Oddly now, when he shows up, the players think "This is the villain who grows bigger as combat goes on."
Having said that, a few changes to him for powers/disadvantages (complications) and he can be a hero.

Tech reacted to Hugh Neilson in Druid ability to pass thru plant-based barriers and entangles?
At some point, probably a page or two back, I like to think I'd be considering a reasonable cost for this abiity, and a reasonable build (likely Desolid, still affected by attacks) with some possible handwaving to make the mechanics match the power as envisioned (definitely including no need for Affects Solid World).

Tech got a reaction from PhilK in Why would one choose Multipower instead of Variable Power Pool?
A Multipower shows at a glance what powers can be used; what have been purchased by the character. A VPP is just that- variable. Not everyone is comfortable having to decide what powers are going to be chosen during a game. This has been echoed in past previous threads. People on the boards report that some times, players whose character have VPP actually slow down the game. So, a Multipower may be an easier choice for a character with different powers.

In our last game, I wanted to show that thugs can be learned too, and give players a laugh...
Jimmy Dugan interviews a thug robbing a store, "Why are you robbing this store?"
Thug replies, "Why? Well, no one's ever asked that before. I think it has to do with the precarity of financial instability in a volatile market situation."
Jimmy Dugan replies, "Really?"
Thug continues, "Yes. You see; the perception of appropriation inspires the person in question to dominate his thinking on said market."

Tech reacted to Hey I Can Chan in Is there a RAR means to do a group pooling of CPs for a group resource?
The rules allow multiple characters to spend Character Points on a Base or Vehicle: "More than one character can contribute toward the cost of a Base or Vehicle" (6E1 107). Further, you can use the rules for Assigned Experience Points to provide characters with additional Character Points toward a Base or Vehicle: "You [the GM] can also choose to award specific Skills or Perks [like Bases and Vehicles] in lieu of Experience Points (assigned or otherwise)" (6E2 293).

Tech got a reaction from Christopher R Taylor in Is Hero still your "go-to" rpg system?
Has been Hero System and apparently always will be. I've played another system but Hero System beats it. When I think Hero System, I think Champions ever since I picked up Champions 1st edition, then 2nd, then 3rd, then...

Tech got a reaction from drunkonduty in How would you simulate a great team leader like Cyclops and Captain America in 5th edition?
We created a team and let one of the players whose never had a leader before, be the leader. The player himself was not necessarily a leader. So, we pushed his character for a Higher Presence, Higher Ego and Tactics skill. As players, when the time came for a leader to do something, then we actively waited for him to make a decision during the game. Repeatedly done, it gives actual experience - and confidence - and the player does much better now with his leader character.

That's me and my friends in our campaign. Nice to see!
Just a comment: since it's been awhile and your son is wanting to play, maybe a simpler character concept might be order to start. Just a suggestion.

Tech reacted to x_Im_tc in Trying to get back into "the game" and looking for some help
Played a lot of Champions back in the day, using what I now know is the "3rd ed." My friends and I played a few years after the 4th edition came out, but we were basically a 3rd edition group. Strict adherence to any rules was not really an issue. We played for fun. If a dice role would break something, we looked away and rolled again. And we took turns being GM, but each had our own character who would, when we were GM, essentially tag along as an NPC. That said, we took our characters seriously and loved working within the rules to build and then, with experience, flesh out characters over time.
Anyway, many years after I stopped playing but many years ago, now, I bought a copy of the Hero System 5th edition rule book. I just got it, in mint condition (minus a little yellowing of the pages), out of an old box of stuff I brought over from my parent's basement. Now, my kids want to play!
My son has an idea for building a character, and I'm looking through the 5th edition rule book (I no longer know where my 3rd and 4th are) and thinking about how to build the powers he's described. I could definitely use some help from "the experts." Is this the right place to post about that?
