Hey everyone, I caught a new Nicktoons animation this weekend called Skyland, which seemed like a mixture of pulp, Star Wars, and anime. The year is 2251, and the Earth has been fractured into floating islands that exist in the atmosphere, high above the cold dead center. Humanity is trying to survive, but a powerful empire, known as the Sphere, is trying to take control of the remaining settlements surrounding the once whole Earth. But there is hope for humanity. A young boy (a hotshot pilot), and his sister (a powerful psi called Seijin) join a ragtag pirate rebellion to fight against the Sphere. With exotic locales, floating pirate ships and fighte…

So, I just bought an old house. The place was built in 1921, and needs some serious renovations. A few days ago, I stuck my head into the unfinished attic, and in addition to decades old insulation and a mummified squirrel, I found a lot of old, old books. Apparently, a young reader had lived in the house around 1938-1945 (many of the books had hand written notes in the front, like "Happy Birthday, Earl! 1941"). For whatever reason, a bunch of this kid's books got stuck in the attic and forgotten about. There were some old science, literature, and spelling books up there, which are neat. But more importantly, in addition to those, there were a bunch of pulp era…

I ran across these three items this week. You may trust them as you will, although the last one, by Harry Knowles at Ain't It Cool News seems the most reasoned. Cross your fingers, folks. ***** Item One: Doc Savage, The Shadow & The Avenger in one movie? Posted : December 7, 2006 Writer : Clint Morris Still 18 days until Christmas, but the presents have already started to pour in. Get your mitts on this little beauty: Sam Raimi is going to make a film that’ll team-up some of the pulp heroes of yesteryear, like The Shadow, The Avenger and Doc Savage. Better than a pair of undies with your initials on them, right?! According to Fi…

Hey all, Has anybody seen this game? I just picked up the PDF (and book) from RPGNow, and I'm having a laugh riot with the game world. The system is a dice pool game, but there's enough there to use Hero with easy. It reminds me of Mad Max meets Army of Darkness meets B-Movie Cinema meets Pulp meets Thundarr the Barbarian meets Gamma World. '45 Psychobilly Retropocalypse http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=6598& Here's the text from the back cover of the PDF:

Sometimes a story comes along that contains so many fanciful elements one must assume that it is the work of fiction. Such is the story of Su Kong Tai Djin. Read more: http://www.thehumanmarvels.com/

I know, I know, they've made announcements about their intentions before, but this time it comes with an official press release, which has been posted on the official http://www.indianajones.com site managed by Lucasfilm. According to the release, filming begins June 2007 for a 2008 release. No specifics on the release date, but one might assume Memorial Day weekend 2008. Personally, that month is already loaded with heavy hitters, so I'm hoping they move it to July 4th, or Thanksgiving. Here's a thought. Other companies have tried to create Indiana Jones-rpgs to no great success. Perhaps Hero Games could license the Indy brand for a series of Jones-specific sc…

Nolgroth runs a Star Hero campaign called Gemini Ascendant. While one of us is on vacation for 3 weeks he's set up and is running a 3-session Pulp Game. Basically with Pulp versions of our Star Hero characters. We're knee deep in the middle of session 1. Right now he's trying to bury the party under an avalanche while we're stuck on the side of a mountain in the Andes. . . When the session is done I'll write up the notes and post all the happy details of the games.

So, I'm gleefully browsing through my GenCon swag, one item of which is Pulp Hero. Amazing. There's a ridiculous amount of information in this book. The history timeline is just insane! I saw so many adventure idea tidbits just flipping the pages. It's nice to see the art take a step up from recent releases as well, even if much of it is reused. Still, there are some good new pieces; who did the pics of most of Randall's Heroes? "M. Calderas"? I didn't see them credited in the front of the book. The old pulp covers are also a nice touch. And the maps! Keith has outdone himself. Incredible job, DOJ!

Hey guys, It's by no means my intention to undermine Pulp HERO but I wanted you folks to give me your opinion on a little side project I've been working on. It's Pulp, but it's not HERO. I have a link here to a draft I’m working on for a pulp version of the old TSR Marvel superheroes Role-playing game called FASERIP Pulp. Some of the stuff might even be useful to someone here as I went real light on the rules part and wrote more on flavor. Any comments would be appreciated. http://evildm.blogspot.com/

Just today I picked up a copy of the sourcebook "You Gotta Have Character" and got to thinking that there might just be a market for a similar book specifically aimed at the "pulp" era (say World War I the end of World War II). I should think that there are plenty of historical characters that could be written up in "Hero" terms for would be referees to use. People like Otto Rahn, General Smedley D Butler, Amy Johnson,Charles Lindberg, Charles Fort, the list could be a very long one. Do people think there could be a market for such a book ? If so, who would you like to see included in it ?

This was written some time ago, but upon putting it into Hero Designer, I noticed some things seemed to be missing. I'll have to re-watch the movie and fill in the blanks. Hey guys! Please do check this book out- it's really excellent, and we'd love to continue doing more Pulp Hero support stuff, but we need to hear from you that there's an audience for it. It's available in the store in both hardcopy and PDF formats, as well as at your finer FLGS's everywhere. Thanks! dw

Real world: The pulp character Nick Carter, who first appeared in 1886, was arguably the prototype for Doc Savage.

I came across this website when looking for Pulp-era images: http://www.vintagelibrary.com They're selling stuff, of course, but even without buying anything I find the site fun to poke around in. The synopses of the pulp fiction books and magazines are inspiring, I think. The cover art on display is amazingly sharp and colorful.
